JOHN OERTLY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, T0 NEW JERSEY PATENT COMPANY, OF WEST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
KINETOSCOPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 21, 1914.
Application filed April 24, 1906. Serial No. 710,698.
T0 all whom, it may concern n Be it known that I, JOHN OERTLY, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the count-y of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kinetoscopes, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to kinetoscopes or apparatus for the projection of moving pictures, and more particularly to the provision of ireans for cutting off the projecting light from the film when the latter is stationary, so that it will be impossible for the film to be ignited from this cause. Heretofore movable shutters have been used for this purpose, said shut-ters being controlled by a centrifugal governor driving mechanism. ever, more or less complicated and eXpenf sive to manufacture and to standard machines now in general use so readily as the invention herein disclosed.
My invention has for its object the pro-, vision of a shutter and controlling incansi operating by friction and comprising lay minimum nuit-ber of parts, so that the device will be cheap to manufacture and reliable and cert-ain in operation.
A further object is the designing of parts so that the device can be very readily applied as an attachment to kinetoscopes now in general use.
Vith these ends in View my invention consists in the features hereinafter def scribed and claimed.
Reference is hereby made to the accompanying drawings of which- Figure l is a rear elevation showing in dotted lines a projecting machine of the Edison type, with one form of my invention7 in full lines7 applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. l, the shutter occupying an open position, as when a film is being exhibited by the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the shutter in a closed position, as when the parts are at rest. Fig. 4 is an isometric view showing the frames which carry the film driving mechanism and display opening respectively and the means by which my invention may be applied to said first frame. Fig. 5 is a detail operated by the filmV Such devices are, how` cannot be applied section of the frictional, shutter-controlling mechanism, on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of the same.
In all of the views corresponding parts are designated by the same reference numerals.
In the apparatus shown, the kinetoscope comprises the usual main support a which carries the frame b in which are mounted the usual gears and sprockets for driving the film past Ithe display opening c which is formed in the plate d, supported from the body a, in the usual manner. The frame b is provided with the usual vertical pin e upon which is hinged the gate f which is adapted to be .opened as shown in Fig. 4 in order to allow the film'to beV threaded through the apparatus, after which it is closed and locked by the latch g to hold the film in proper position with respect to the display openingc.
The improved attachment, as shown, is composed of two members, namely: a shutter "frame 1 and-a shutter controlling device 2. The shutter framelf isprovided with a pair of laterally extending arms 3, 3 journaled on thepin e whereby the said frame may occupy an open position as shown in Fig. 4 when. it is desired to open the gate f, and after the film has been inserted in the projecting apparatus and the Vgate closed and locked, the frame l may be swung into the position shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3, and locked to the frame b in any suitable manner. The locking means shown comprises a set screw 4 threaded in one arm of the fork 5 which is formed in the end of an arm 6 extending laterally from the frame 1, the said fork being adapted to engage the horizontal member L of the frame b. The shutter frame 1 is provided with upper and lower guards 41 and 42 respectively and an opening 7 which occupies a position directly behind the display opening c when the shutter frame is in its closed position. The opening 7 is normally closed by the shutter 8 of any suitable heat resisting material, such as a metal or alloy. This shutter is fixed on and depends from a horizontal rock Shaft 9 which is journaled in bearingslO integral with the frame 1. Upon the outer end of the shaft 9 is a crank 11 secured by means of a set screw 12. The crank 11 is provided with a A recess 13 by which it may beoperatively connected with' the shutter controlling means 2 which will now be described.
The controlling means2ris adapted to replace the crank by which the lm driving mechanism is ordinarily driven and comprises a sleeve 14 which ts upon and is secured to the usual elongated hub z'. of the large driving gear y`,'the groovesrl of the said sleeve engaging the keys k by'which the gear j is secured to its hub. A set screw 15a is provided for locking-thesleeve 14 upon the hub Upon the sleeve 14 and adjacent the shoulder 16 is a friction member 17, preferably in the form of a felt washer. Upon the outer end of the sleeve 14 is mounted a crank member 18 the outer face of which is countersunk as shown at 19 to receive the operating crank 20 having a'handle 21 to which the driving power is applied, the crank-20 and member 18 being clamped rigidly together by the bolt-22 'and nut123, the crank accurately tting the'countersunk portion 19, whereby any-.itendencyffor the `lparts to work loose is. avoided.- -f-'Aninclined slot 24is formed in the. crank member-'118y and a pin 25. passes through'said slotiand'i's fixed within'the sleeve.14." A Spiral"f"tenl` sion spring 26 is secured .atl one end -tothe/ said pin 25- and atthe'otheisenditofa sup-Iv port 27 which` is.rigidlyclamped'between the nut 23 and crank member 18. The' spring` 26 normally holds tthe crank member 18 in the position shown-in=Fig.a-7 wherein thepin 25 bears against'theend ofthe'i'slot- 24.. v1 The spring -is so designed-that when driving power is applied;A to the crank -f 20' the resistance set up byfxthe-'film and-:film` driving mechanism .will causethe springtof yield, thereby producing a -relativernove-'- ment of the pin 25 and slot 24, that is, a limited. spiral movement ofthe; member 18 upon the sleeve 14.-- Such; movement may,
however, be prevented if desired by-afserew or stop 28 which is threaded -in the'. end of the crank 20. When this stop abuts against the end of thel sleeve 14 as shown in Fig. 5, no movement of the'member -18, with respect to the sleeve .14 can -take place,= -but by. moving the stop 28 outward the spiral movement` referred `to.will be permitted.V
The crank member 18 is preferably of metal and its inner face 29 may be covered by a washer 30 of comparatively softvniaterialA such as fiber. secured thereto by countersunk screws 31. Loosely mounted upon the sleeve 14, between the washers 17; and 30, is a ring 32 which may be 'of metal, such as steel, and which is provided with an ear 33 to which is pivoted at 34 a link 35 which forms an operating connection between the ring 32 and crank 11, a pin 36'being secured to the upper end of the said link and adapted to engage the recess 13 in said crank. The operation of the device is as follows: The film having been threaded through the apparatus and the parts being in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the operator grasps the handle 2-1 andY applies driving power to the crank 20; the resistance set up by the film and film .driving sprockets and gears causes the crank member 18 to be moved spirally with respect to the sleeve 14 by reason of the engagement of the inclined slot 24 and pin 25,'such movement of the crank 2O being indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. This movement causes the washer30 to press the ring32 against the felt washer 1T, and as the crank 2() is rotated by the operator the friction developed between the felt Washer andthe ring 32 causes the latter to turn from the position of Fig. 3 to that shown in F ig. 2, thereby through the link 35 and crank 11 turning the rock shaft J and elevating the shutter 8 into the position of Fig. 2 so that the light for projecting the pictures-upon the film may reach the display-opening c.' As soon as the driving power"is-removed'from the crank 20, the spring`26 will restore the crank member 18 toitsori'ginal position thereby removing the pressurev of' the ring 32 upon the'friction -member"17,"andthe weight of the shutter 8, crank '11,and link 35V will cause the shutter to close, thereby-'cutting ofi' the projectinglight from the lm. In case, how-j ever, the operator wishes to pass a film through the apparatus without opening the shutter, lall that is necessary to do is to turn the; screw 28 until it presses against the end of the sleev.e '14, as shown in Fig. 5, and the film-may then be driven at any speed whilev the shutter .remains closed.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- .frame having a display opening, means for passing a film across said opening, a nor- Amally closed shutter back of said opening,
