SANITARY GARBAGE-RECEPTACLE.

dent of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sanitary Garbage-Receptacle, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
This invention relates to storage receptacles, and particularly to receptacles designed to store garbage, trash, and the like, and has for an object to provide an improved structure which will automatically close itself after each time the same is opened.
A further object of the invention is to provide a receptacle having a disinfectant dispensing means arranged therein and coacting with the lid of the receptacle for dispensing or discharging a predetermined amount of disinfectant each time the lid is opened, the disinfectant dispensed being of any desired kind.
In carrying out the objects of the invention, areceptacle of a proper size for receiving the can is provided, having a canreceiving compartment and a lid-receiving compartment, the can or lid in the receptacle being inserted or removed through a suitable door. Arranged back of the canreceiving compartment is a liquid or disinfectant-receiving compartment designed to receive one end of an atomizer which is operated each time the lid of the receptacle is opened. In order to accomplish this result a collapsible pneumatic bag is provided arranged in the path of movement of an extension on the lid to be collapsed thereby and thus force air through the atomizer each time the lid is opened, whereby a certain quantity of the disinfectant is discharged,
a suitable discharge nozzle being provided for directing the disinfectant into the can in the can-receiving compartment.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout all the news.
Figure 1 is a front view of an embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a section through Fig. 1 approximately on line 22; Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 2 approximately on line 33; and Fig. 4 is a section throu h Fig. 2 on line 4-4.
Re errin to the accompanying drawings by numera, 1 indicates a housing formed of any desired material, preferably zinc or sheet iron properly galvanized. The housing 1 is provided with a door 2 which permits the can 3 to be properly inserted and removed, as well as the lid 4, compartments 5 and 6 being provided for the can and lid, respectively. At the rear of. the compartment 5 is a third compartment 7 designed to receive a disinfecting fluid 8 and the feeding tube 9 of an atomizer 10. The atomizer 10 is secured to a cover 11 by threads or in any desired manner so as to be held rigidly in position. A removable discharge nozzle 12 is connected with the atomizer 10 so as to direct the fluid 8 into the can 3, while a rigidly secured pipe 13 extends from the opposite side for causing communication between the atomizer and the pneumatic bag 14. A coupling 15 is provided in the pipe 13 so that the bag 14' may be disconnected from the pipe 13 at any time. When the coupling 15 is disconnected and the nozzle 12 is removed the atomizer may be unfastened and removed from the plate 11.
The bag 14 rests upon a shelf 16 connected in any desired manner to the side plates 17 and 18 and to an upstanding flange 19 projecting fromthe plate 11. In order to properly position the bag 14 a slot or opening 20 is provided whereby the bag may be positioned centrall' of the shelf 16.
The presser plate 21 is provided with a rubber facing 22 which is adapted to cover the eyelets 23 and 24 before beginning the collapsing action of the bag. These eyelets could be made in the form of valves, if desired, although ordinarily such will not be necessary, as the rubber 22 will seal the eyeillustration the same is shown with the body portion 40 having passageways 41 and 42 provided therein, the passageway 42 communicating with the interior of the tank or receptacle 7 and with the bag 14 through members 13 and 15. The aperture 41 communicates with pipe 9 and with the discharge member 12 so that when air is forced through bag 14 downward into the tank 7, a corresponding quantity of liquid 8 will be forced upwardly through pipe 9 and outthe discharge member 12.
The presser plate 21 is a bent over portion of an extension from the door or lid 26 which is pivotally mounted at 27 and 28 to the upper part of the side walls of the housing 1. Reinforcing bars 25 and 32 brace the sheet metal portion of the door and also the presser plate construction 21 so that when the door is open and the presser plate is caused to press against the pneumatic bag 14 the structure will be sufliciently strong for accomplishing the purpose desired. In order to have access to the bag 14 and associated parts, including the compartment 7, a removable portion 37 isprovidedfor the chamber 33, the same being hinged at 38 and provided with an overhangingflange 39 for insuring a tight joint. By providing the removable portion 37 an inspection or repairs may be made to the various 'arts and also the compartment 7 may be re led. At.
the opposite end of the end to which the flange 39 is placed is an overlapping flange 40 extending upwardly from the plate 11. In connection with the plate 11 it w1ll be 'observed that the same extends from one wall to the other of the housingl and provides'a top for the compartments 5 and 7, so that the one passageway or means of communica-.
In operation, after the various parts have been arranged as shown in Fig. 2, and it is desir'ed to place garbage or other matter in the can 3, the lid 26 is raised until the I presser plate 21 collapses the bag 14. This will cause a certain amount of the disinfect ing fluid 8 to be sprayed into the can 3. The garbage or other matter is then admitted through the aperture 34 into the can 3 and the lid 26 is permitted to automatically close. The next time anything is to be laced in the can 3 the lid 26 is again opene and the operation is repeated. In this way each layer of matter. placed in the can receives a certain amount of disinfecting fluid 8. It will beevident, of course, that ifthe lid was opened without placing any matter in the can 3 several layers of disinfecting fluid could be provided. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, a housing formed with a lower part and an upperpart, said lower part comprising a can receivlng chamber and a liquid receiving chamber, said upper part comprislng an entrance hood formed with a pivotally mounted a door having an extension arranged thereon and with a flooring structure provided with an aperture therein, said flooring structure being formed with a substantially surrounding upstanding wall for guiding matter through-said aperture, and means actuated by the extension on said door for directing liquid from said liquid receiving chamher to said can receiving chamber.
2. In a device of the character described, a housing provided with a canreceiving chamber, a liquid-receiving chamber, an atomizer associated with said liquid-receiving chamber and. formed with a discharge member adapted to discharge liquid into said can-receiving chamber and a pneumatic bag for supplying air to said discharge member, said pneumatic bag being formed with a pair of eyelets, a swinging door for said housing, said bag being arranged in the path of moveinent of said door, a presser arranged on In'testimony whereof I have signed my said door formed with a resilient covering name to this specification in the presence of 10 member designed to engage and cover the two subscribing witnesses.
