Description

lau
didnt %tatr5 Etaient @dat GEORGE A. SOHOHTEL, OE NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELE-AND ROBERT B. SANDERSON. i
Letters Patent No. 109,256, dated November 15, 1870.
The` Schedule referred to in these :Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, GEORGE A. SoHAoHrnL, of Newark, lin the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension-Platform Step-Ladders; andI do hereby declare that th'e following is a full, clear, and exact description-0f the same, reference being had to the accom panying-drawing which forms part of this specication.
rlhe object of this invention is to provide for the extension of the platform of a step-ladder, to enable it to support, in addition to the person using it, a basket for gatherng'fruit, a pail for scrubbing purposes, or any article that may be desired. To this end,
lt consists in an extension piece, which is hinged to the front of the platform of the ladder, and, when extended, is supported by a brace or stay hin-ged to its front portion, the lower ends of said stay fitting into and being supported by pockets, notches, or other resting places provided in or on the prop of the la'dder for that purpose.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates my invention- Figure l is a side elevation of a ladder, showing it,
extended, and
Figure 2 is asimilar view, showing it folded for transportation. l y
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both Jfigures.
To enable others skilled iii the art-to make and use forth lhe extension iiccel) which is of rectangularlibrm is hinged to the front side of the platform B, and has hinged to its outer or rear edge a stay, E. This stay is of somewhat similar form to the prop of thc ladder,
consist-ing of two legs, held together by cross-braces. lhe extension piece D may b'e hinged to the platform proper, and the stay E be hinged to the extension piece by metal stra-ps c, attached to the one and encircling pivots al formed 0n the other, as shown in the drawing, or they may be hinged together in th ordinary manner.
Then the ladder is folded for transportation the extension piece I) and its stay E are in line with each other and parallel with the p rop of the ladder, and, in consequence, this ladder requires very little more packing space than the ordinary step-ladder.
,'lo use the ladder the prop is thrown forward, thereby presenting the form ofan ordinary step-ladder. The stay E is then drawn forward, pushed up, and its legs inserted into the pockets a on the prop C, and the extension platform is thereby raised and lirmly supported.
That I claim as n'iyinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y The combination of thehinged extension piece l) and stay E with the platform B and prop G of the ladder, substantially as and for the purpose herein set GEORGE A. scHAoH'rE-L.
Witnesses FRED. Harinas, It. E. RABEAU.
