To all whom it may concern;
citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new I and useful Improvement in Safety Devices for Power-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
machines such as presses and stamps, and the object is to guard against injury to the operator or workman so that when the treadle or supporting device is inadvertently held in a depressed or abnormal position the machine cannot repeat its operation or stroke and injure the operator.
The improvement is useful in a. power press where a constantly operating driving part is automatically connected by a springactuated clutch with the driven part; and a stop, operated by a treadle, is normally in position to restrain the clutch and hold it open. To start the machine the treadle is depress d to remove the stop, and if the treadle is held downthe plunger descends repeatedly. he operator sometimes carelessly or unconsciously holds the treadle down and is hurt when the plunger descends unexpectedly. These machines usuallv employ a pivoted stop to hold the clutch normally open, with a treadle or device operated by the hand or toot of the Workman to move the stop out of engaging position with respect to said clutch. Th s improvement employs the described clutch'and stop and adds a second or duplicate stop which is moved into the position vacated bvthe first stop when the treadlc is depressed, so that if the treadle is-held depressed the second stop is in position to open the clutch, and a second descent of thoplunger cannot occur until the treadle is allowed to return to its upper limit and is again depressed. To start the machine, treadle t is depressed by foot or hand; the stop as is moved out of othe path of the member 0; the spring 10 rotates the key it and causes it to unite the driving part 1- with the driven shaft the shaft 5 makes one complete rotation; and the plunger 7 descends and returns. an operation which would continue repeatedly it the 31m 'at an angle of from ten to fifteen degrees with reference thereto. lVith this arrangement, if the treadle t is not released in time to'allow the stop a: .to take its normal position in which it lies in the path of the end of the finger 0, the stop y will be in position to engage the end of the finger 0 and will rotate the key 70 to its non-holding position, as shown in Fig. 4. If, after the stop l has engaged the finger o in the manner just described, the treadle t is allowed to rise,the stop y moves out of the path of the 'Tofith finger 0 and the stop ac moves into position to engage the finger 0 and hold it in the position in which the key in is inoperative as a driving connection.

is obvious that the plunger 72 of the less can never descend more than once ,or a single depression of the treadle i There is, therefore, no danger that the operator'will be injured by unexpected repeate reciprocation of the plunger when he depresses the treadle and desires only a single operation of the press.
What I claim is 1. In a power driven machine, the combination of a driving part, a driven part, a device for automatically connecting said parts, and means for releasing and then restraining said device at the limits of one movement of said driven part, consisting of a pair of stops for said connecting device, and a manually operated controlling device for removing one-stop and moving the other into restraining position by a single movement thereof.
2. In a power driven machine, the combination of an automatic clutch for connecting the driving and driven parts, duplicate devices for releasing and restraining said clutch, a manually operated controlling device, and means whereby a single unidirectional movement substitutes one of said duplicate devices for the other and permits a single operation of said machine.
3. ln a. power driven machine, the combination of a clutch for connecting the driving and driven parts, a plurality of devices for releasing and restraining said clutch, a treadle for controlling said devices, and means whercb the depression of said treadle removes one device to start said machine and substitutes another device to stop said machine by a single uni-directional movement.
4. In a power driven machine, a driving part, a driven part, and means for operatively connecting said parts together comprising a clutch mechanism having an operating finger, a stop adapted to cooperate with said finger to release the clutch mechanism. means-for moving said stop into and out of the path of said finger, and another stop movable with said first named stop into the path of said finger when the first stop moves out of said path.
5. In combination with a rotary clutch having an operating finger projecting therefrom, a. stop adapted to cooperate with said finger, means for moving said stop into and out of the path of said finger, and a second stop movable with said first-named stop and arranged to lie in the path of said linger when the first named stop is out of said path.
