which may be engaged fwith any desired spaces B2 on the cap, this adjustment, however, being limited by the necessary separa,- tion' of the respective ribs and spaces, which we will say for .example cannot be less than a certain predetermined amount, as indicated by the longer or principal scale marks designated by the numerals on the scale J. In other words, due to the necessities of construction, it may be assumed that the mini mum adjustment of the liner E with reference to the cap B is that corresponding to the distance between two of the principal scale marks, which may be taken as the uni- 'tary capability of these adjusting means.
Thus in Fig. l, the liner E is shown as adjusted to the scale mark 8, and it, of course, may be moved in either direction, say to the point 9, but it cannot be moved to a minor o r intermediate scale marit., such as 8-25. Therefore to secure the minor as well as the principal adjustments that may be desired, I provide the second form of adjusting means, which enable the longitudinal setting of the cap B with reference to the end pieces C and D. These means comprise the transverse grooves B3 near the end of the cap B, arranged to engage the transverse ribs C3 on the end piece C, the4 grooves E? and ribs C3 being respectively separated to an extent suiiicient to give the half-unit adjustment when desired. Thus in Fig. l the two centrai grooves B3 are shown in engagement with the ribs C3, whereas in Fig. 2, the two extreme grooves are shown in engagement with the ribs, this difference in position lbeing suiiicient to move the liner into registration with the scale mark 8%. It will thus be noted that the end pieces C and D not only serve to adjust the mold cap B toward and away from the body portion A, in order to vary the width of the mold slot, but in addition serve to maintain the mold cap B in l its different longitudinally adjusted positions.
It will be seen that due to these combined mea-ns I am enabled to secure substantially every variety oi lengtlr adjustment that may be desired, the unit adjustment being preferably effected by the relation of the liner to the cap, and the half-unit adjustment by the relation of the cap to the ehd piece. In order. to secure the correct tore and aft relation of the cap to the mold, Athe end of the capis formed with the short liongitudinal recesses B10 adapted to engage the shortlongitudh'ial ribs C10 and D10 onI the respective en'd pieces.. in any adjusted position or" the cap` As already stated, I bave shown my invention only in preferred form and by way f example and as applied to a linotype machine, but many modifications and changes in its construction and mode of adaptation will suggest themselves to those skilled 1n the art without departure from its scope.
Having thus described my invention, its construction and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent -of the United. States is as follows:
l. A slotted'mold comprising upper and lower walls, one adjustable relatively to the other lengthwise of the slot, and a.l part adjustable relatively to saidwalls lengthwise of the slot and constituting one of the end walls of the mold proper.
2. A slotted mold com rising a body por tion, a cap portion a justable relatively thereto lengthwise of the slot, and an intermediate liner adjustable relatively to the cap portion lengthwise of the slot.
3. A slotted mold comprising a body dportion, a cap portion, and an interme iat'e liner attac e to the cap portion and adjustable relatively thereto lengthwise of the the other according to' a fraction of such unit.
5. A slotted mold comprising a body portion, a cap portion formed on its inner face with projecting ribs whose separation corresponds to a typographie unit, and an intermediate liner recessed to receive the projecting ribs'of the cap portion and adapted to be set in diiierent positions thereon, the said cap portion being adjustable lengthwise of the slot according to a fraction-of such typographie unit, i
