Application filed January 15, 1912. Serial No. 671,155.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known-that I, HENRY C. MAUL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Broilers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such asjwill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to gas broilers, and consists in the construction and operative association of parts hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide in a gas broiler a broiling rack which may at all times be held in a horizontal plane, and which may be projected forwardly when desired, or raised and lowered with respect to the burner flame, provision being made for manually manipulating the rack and for affording a counterpoise therefor so that the movement of the rack will be steady at all points in its travel.
The above object is attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a gas broiler embodying my invention, the legs thereof being broken away. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in vertical section through the movable frame which carries the broiler rack, and the burners which supply the flame for broiling. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section as on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. t is a fragmentary view in elevation show ing the toothed circle bar with which the detent on the actuating lever is adapted to engage to lock the broiling rack at any point of adjustment. Fig. 5 is a sectional view as on line 55 of Fig. 6. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view in section through the slidable handle of the actuating lever, the detent or pawl thereon, and the circle bar which cooperates with the pawl or detent to lock the lever in adjustment. Fig. 7 is a vertical transverse section through the rear portion of the frame which carries the broiling rack, as on line 7 7 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the characters of reference, 1 designates a gas broiler of the type having an upper oven '2, below the bottom of which are the transverse gas burners 3 which-supply the :heat for said oven and also afford the required flame for broilin'g. Below said burners is a broiling rack 4, shown more clearly in Fig. l,'upon which articles to be broiled are placed. This rack is supported to slide in the horizontally extending channel bars 5 located at the sides of the broiler. Each of the channel bars. 5 is provided at its ends with the project-ing ears 6. The upper ends of the swinging arms 7 and 8 are pivoted at 9 to the ears (3 at the forward and rear ends-respectively of said channel bars. Said arms are arranged in pairs, the front pair 7 being connected by a cross bar IO'WhICh is journaled in the broiler frame near the front thereof, and the rear pair 8 being connected by a cross bar 11 which is journaled in the frame at the rear. The arms of each pair being connected by their respective cross bars, and the pairs of arms being connected by the channel bars 5, a frame is afforded which will swing upon the pivots of said arms'7 and 8, and maintain the rack carried in the channel bars of said frame always in a horizontal position as said frame swings.
Patented Mar. 31, 1914.
To provide for manipulating the swinging frame which carries the broiling rack, a lever 12 is connected to the projecting end 13. (see Fig. 3) of the journaled or pivotally mounted cross bar 10 of the arms 7 of said frame, whereby as said lever is swung in the arc of a circle movement is imparted to the arms of the rack frame, causing the broiler rack tobe carried outwardly and downwardly to the dotted position shown in Fig. 2 as said lever is swung forwardly, and to the position shown by solid lines in said figure when said lever is returned to the normal position. I
To afford a counterpoise for the swinging frame and rack, an arm 14: is caused to project downwardly and rearwardly from the cross-bar l0, and a weight 15 is mounted on the free end thereof which serves to balance the weight of the broiler rack and frame, whereby said parts are caused to move evenly and smoothly when manipulated.
For the purpose of securing the swing ing frame at any point of adjustment a toothed circle bar 16 is employed which is fastened to the side of the broiler adjacent the lever 12, and said lever is pro- 'fdle while rendered capable of ment on said lever cannot ers is a projecting flange 22 adapted to stri e upon the upper ends of said teeth whenthe detents are placed in engagement therewith to prevent said de. tents wedging therein. The arrangement is such that by sliding the handle upwardly on the lever 12,.as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 6, the detents are carried free from the teeth of'the circle bar, enabling said lever' to be swung in either direction to effect such an adjustment of the broiling rack as may be desired, when upon releasing said handle it will slide downwardly upon the lever 12 and car y the detents thereof again into engagementiwith the teeth of the circle bar and lock the lever against movement.
In actuating the frame of the broiler, rack the handle 17 is grasped by the Qperator and raised so as to free the detents thereof from the teeth of the rack or circle bar, when the leyer'12 will be free to swing upon its fulcrum.
When the swinging frame which carries the broilerrack is actuated through the mediumofthe lever 12 the rack carried by said-frame is normally projected forwardly as said frame swings downwardly to the po-' sitionshown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which position the meat or other article to be broiled may readily be placed upon the rack, when, by a return movement of 'said lever, said frame may be swung upwardly to carry the rack in proximity to the flame of the burners. Should it be desired to lower the broiler rack without carry-ing it forwardly from under the burners the frame may be swung fOIW-tll'b'g and downwardly through the medium of the lever 12 and the rack at the same time shoved 'r'earwardly in the channels of the side bars 5, the effect of said; combined H movement being to lower'the broiler" rack with respect to the burner flame without carrying it forwardly away from the heat thereof, said rack remaining at all times in a-horizontal position. By this arrangement the rack may be-raised and lowered in a detents 21 adapted to enter teeth of the rack or circle bar 16, as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 5. On each of said fin ing frame, and means I atany point of adjustment.
' substantially perpendicular plane,- enablin .the distance between the broiling rackan the flame to be varied within certain limits without carrying said rack forwardly to such an extent as to remove it from under the burners. v
. I-Iavin thus fully set forth my invention, what I c aim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:--
1. A gas broiler com rising a burner, a rack frame below the burner mounted to swing, a broiling rack carried at the top of the swinging broilerconnected with the rack-frame for manipulating it.
2. In a broiler, a rack pivoted arms, slide bars per ends of said arms, a ably carried on said slide bars and maintained thereon in a horizontal plane when frame com rising ivoted to t e upsaid frame swings, a lever for manipulating the rack frame, and .a counterpoise for sald' rack frame connected therewith.
3'. In a broiler, a swinging rack frame comprising pivotal supports, a broiling rack mounted in said frame frame to slide therein, said rack being at all times supported in a horizontal plane, and a lever exterior to the roiling rack slid to swing therewith and slide therem, alever exterior to the broiler connected to the pivotal member of said supports'for mani ulating said swingor locking said lever 4. In a broiler, a rack frame mounted to swing, a broiler rack support pivoted to said frame, and a broiling rack mounted to slide forth and back in said pivoted support.
5 In a broiler, swing, a broiling rack carried by said frame in a horizontal plane, a lever foractuating said frame, a toothedv circle bar, a handle slidable upon theend of said lever, said handle carrying a. detent adapted to engage said circle bar to lock the lever against movement, and means for preventing the jamming of the detent between the teeth of said circle bar.
6. In a broiler, a rack frame, a manipua rack frame pivoted to latin lever for the rack frame, a locking handIe mounted on said lever to slide vertically, and astop upon saidlever to'prevent said handle being lifted too far.
In testimony whereof, I sign this speci
