CHRISTIAN G. KAMISKE, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
SIGNAL APPARATUS.
T 0 all whomitma z concern Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN G. Kam- ISKE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signal Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in,what is herein particularly set forth with reference to accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification, its object being to provide simple, economical and efficient means applicable along a railway-track under control from a distant point to provide for stop signaling in a locomotive-cab, and which is also applicable in connection with a railway bridge or switch to indicate when the same is out of normal position.
Figure l of the drawings represents a side elevation of the means aforesaid applied along side of a rail of a railway-track, and a fragment of a locomotive in travel on said track. Fig. 2 of said drawings indicates a cross-section of what is shown in Fig. 1, and is indicated by line 22 in the same.
Referring by numerals to the drawings 3 indicates a rectangular stand bolted and spiked in position outside of one of the rails of a railway-track, but it may be positioned intermediate of the track-rails. J ournaled in the stand adjacent to one end thereof is an arbor a that extends outside of said stand where it is provided with a crank 5 connected to a cable or rod 6 designed to be operated at a distance from the crank. The arbor is also shown provided with a pointer 7 designed to traverse a scale provided on the outside of the stand 3, as shown in Fig. 1, and the pointer may be in one piece with the crank 5 as is best shown in Fig. 2.
Fast on the arbor is one end of an arm 8 that is normally horizontal in opposition to a suitable stop and the arm opposes the underside of an obstacle 9 independently connected by a spring-hinge 10 to the end of said stand adjacent to the arbor 4, but clear of the same, and by an operation of the crank 5 the obstacle is lifted against spring-resistance to be in the path of a depending trip 11 in pivotal connection with a locomotive, said trip being part of an actuat- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing mechanism for a signal designed to be located in the cab of the locomotive.
Provision may be had for manually operating the crank 5 at a distance therefrom to elevate the obstacle 9, or said crank may be suitably connected to a railway bridge or switch for automatic operation by the same to indicate by said obstacle that said bridge or switch is out of normal position. In case of depression from normal elevation on the part of a bridge suitably connected to said crank, the pointer 7 is designed to inclicate, on the adjacent scale, the degree of depression, and the condition being one of danger, the obstacle 9 may be swung full up in the path of a trip 11 carried as aforesaid, said obstacle being retained in this position.
In connection with a switch, it is intended that the obstacle 9 shall be automatically elevated to working position any time the switch is opened, it requiring a closing of said switch to return said obstacle to normal position.
I claim:
1. A signal-mechanism comprising a stand for location along a railway track, an arbor journaled in the stand, a normally horizontal arm rigid on the arbor, means for actuating said arbor from a distant point to lift the arm, an obstacle, and a spring-hinge connecting the obstacle with the arbor-end of said stand over said arm by which it is lifted against resistance of the hinge.
2. A signal-mechanism comprising a stand for location along a railway track, an arbor journaled in the stand, a normally horizontal obstacle, a spring-hinge connecting the obstacle and stand, means for actuating the arbor from a distant point, means in connection with said arbor by which to elevate said obstacle against spring-resistance in the path of a tripper carried by a locomotive running on said track, and means for sealing a displacement of the aforesaid obstacle from normal position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTIAN G. KAMISKE.
