SAFETY DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR MONTZ- HEIMER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of J oliet, in the county of V'Vill and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to safety devices for use on railroads and has particular reference to a novel tell tale device for use in warning trainmen of the approach of the car on which they are riding to an abutment of obstruction which might cause injury to the trainmen.
In practically all railroad yards, sidings and tracks in general, there are many viaducts and bridges which require abutments or girders projecting above the track sur' face, these obstructions usually being located closely adjacent to the track thus providing in many instances insufficient clearance for a workman who may be riding on the outside of a car as frequently happens in switching. It not infrequently happens that a workman is brushed from a moving car by coming in contact with such abutments and obstructions, causing injury and sometimes death.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a tell tale or warning device which may be located in a plane parallel to the outer face of the abutment or obstruction and arranged to contact the body of a workman clinging to the exterior of the car, this contact being sufliciently gentle to cause no injury to the workman but nevertheless to warn him of danger. A particular object in the present construction is to provide an extremely simple device which may be installed without unnecessary expense and which will not rely upon springs for assurance of operation.
A further object is to provide such a de vice which cannot easily become inoperative due to accumulation of dirt, ice or snow.

Referring more particularly to the drawings it will be seen that to a foundation, 10, is secured a pair of brackets 11, by means of angle bolts 12. At the upper end of the brackets 11 are provided suitable apertures within which a pin 13, is seated, this pin being held in place by a cotter or other well known means. Pivoted on the pin 13, is a flat bar 14, to which is secured by suitable bolts, a. pair of wood uprights 15, joined at their upper ends, one of the standards extending above the other and to this extended end is secured by suitable bolts, a pair of diverging plates 16, of thin spring steel. These plates have secured thereto extensions 17, of rubber or other similar material.
In order that the target or tell tale devices may normally be held in vertical position, I provide a counter-weight 18, slidably mounted on the metal bar 14, and held in position by means of set-bolt 19. The counter-weight may be adjusted to secure the proper return of the signal to vertical position after being contacted.
It is obvious that modifications may be made in the construction shown and such modifications as are within the scope of my claims I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base, an upstanding bracket secured to said base, a counterweighted standard pivoted to said bracket, and flexible means secured to the upper free end of said standard, said flexible means being adapted to contact the body of the Workman on the side of a car to give warning of the approach to an obstruction, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a support providing bearings, a'counter-Weighted standard pivoted in said bearings and adapted to swing in a plane parallel with the track rails, and flexible means secured to the upper end of said standard, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pair of brackets providing bearings,' a standard pivoted in bearings in said brackets and adapted to swing in a 5 plane parallel with the track rails a portion of the standard projecting below the pivoted point being counter-Weighted to insure its normal vertical position, and aflexible warning target secured to the free end of said standard, substantially as described.
