SAFETY LAMP-BURNER.
S ecfcatien of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2er, 1914.
Application led December 27', 1912. Serial No. 738.862.
I'e it known that I, Ciinis'iori-inu l. J. Ti'i'riioxo. a citizen of the United States, residing at Sun Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented new and useful iiiipi'ovenients in Safety Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to lamp burners, the object in view being to pi'ovide a safety lamp burner embodying, in connection with the usual elements, a self-balancing flame extinguishing cone, which, when the lamp is orerturiied or subjected to an unusual agitation or shaking, tumbles over the wick and serves to instantly extinguish the flame, thereby preventing serious accident.
lilith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto ap pended.
In the drawings: Figure l is a diainetrical section through a lamp burner, showing the present invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the extinguishing cap. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation, showing the openings which re ceive the balancing' feet of the cap. Fig'. 5 is a sectional view similar to F ig. l, showing a modified arrangement of the extinguishing cap. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the extinguishing cap under the arrangement shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detail per spective view of the cap support.
rlhe main body of the burner l is of the usual form or construction, being provided with the chimney supporting flange 2, the perforated floor 3. and the wick tube 4t, in which the wick of the lamp is mounted and adapted to be slid up and down.
5 represents the usual cone provided with the flame orifice 6.
In carrying out the present invention, the body of the lamp is provided at diametrically opposite points with rectangular openings 7. the same being adapted to receive the oppositely projecting feet 8 ofthe extinguishing cap, illustrated in detail in Fig. 3.
rl`he flame extinguishing cap comprises a dome-shaped body 9 having a central flame orifice lO which is n'iaterially larger than the corresponding orifice G in the cone 5, so as not to interfere in any Nay with the flame, when such extinguishing cono is in its normal position.
rl`he extinguishing cap is arranged within and under the cone 5, and is of such size that it may readily tip over to one side or the other. The balancing feet 8 are suiciently wide and fiat to rest in the bottoms of the rectangular openings 7, as shown in Fig. d, so that the extinguishing cap will remain in a central position until the lamp is agitated or shaken. whereupon the cap 9, by reason of its high center of gravity. will tip over to one side or the other, thereby causing the dome-shaped body to snuff out the flame before an accident occurs.
Another form of the device. embodying thc same principle. is illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, in which ll designates a support for the extinguishing cap, the same being in the form of a rectangular sleeve adapted to fit over and be frictionally retained on the up per end of the wick tube fl. This support is provided with the oppositely and outwardly extending horizontally flat balancing feet l2, which correspond with the feet 8 shown in Fig. 3, being for the same purpose. The cap shown in F 6 is provided with rectangular openings 13 corresponding with the openings 7 in Fig. 4, the openings 13 being designed to receive the balancing feet 19.
By reference to Fig. 5, it will be seen that the outwardly extending balancing feet l2 pass through the openings in the extinguishing cap, and render the action of the tilting extinguishing cap exactly the same as that described in connection with Figs. l to fr, inclusive.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
In combination, a base plate. a wick tube projecting above said base plate, a substan tially dome-shaped hood fixed upon said base plate and surrounding said wick tube, said hood being formed at diametrically opposite sides with rectangular openings, a dome-shaped extinguisher. oppositely arranged lugs formed upon the extinguisher and arranged to seat upon the edges of said opening, said opening being relatively In testimony whereof I @Prix my signature largerthan the thickness of said lugs, and in presence of two Witnesses.
right angular feet formed on said lugs, said extinguisher being spaced coneentrieally CHRISTOPHER B' J' WITMOND .5 from said hood, said feet arranged to fricfitnessesz tionally engage the body of said hood at op- T. H. BRowNE, posite points. J. W. ETHERIDGE.
