T0 @ZZ whom it' may concern Be it lrnown that l, YUsirn Mlrasairr, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at McKees Rocks, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Truclr-Bolsters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
This inventio-nrelates to new and useful improvements in cast steel truck holsters for railway cars and the primary object of the invention is to provide a. highly efhcient bolster which will be free from shrinkage strains and common defects.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a truck bolster of the character described in which a uniform thickness of metal is maintained throughout the section and a proper distribution of the metal made throughout.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing double flanges at the top and bottom of the bolster so arranged as to present the most economical section possible which is capable of dealing with the forces met therewith in practice.
A still further and more specific object of the invention is to provide a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very emcient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
ln the accompanying drawing forming a part 0f this application, Figure 1 is a plan view of my device. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a section as seen on line 3 3, of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a similar view as seen on line 4-4, of Fig. 2.
In describing my invention. I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a flat metal section designed to form a web, the same being increased in height from points adjacent each end, toward the center thereof. as indicated at 2 and formed on the upper and lower edges of said web section, are the T-head flanges 3 and 4, respectively. rfhese upper and lower flanges 3 and l on the web section are Specification of Letters Eatent.

equal in width for the greater portion of their length and the same terminate in wid ened or increased portions 5, affording increased bearing surfaces at such points and said flanges 3 and st are provided with enlarged openings (5 on each side of the web section at the increased or widened end portions 5 thereof.
rlhe upper and lower flanges are connected together at the end portions 5 thereof, by means of the vertical walls 7, which are cast integral therewith and extend to points just beyond the junction of the increased or widened portions 5 of the flanges with the remaining portions thereof and the outer faces of these side walls are provided with pairs of spaced apart ribs S, providing means thereon for the reception of beams or other engaging members. Also formed integral with the upper face of the upper flange 3, at points adjacent and inward from the openings 6 therein, are the upstanding flanges 9 which are designed to inclose rectangular spaces, said flanges being provided for obvious purposes.
The web section 1, at the central portion thereof has a substantially vertical tubular portion 10 formed therein, which tubular portion is tapered larger toward its upper end and terminates at its upper end in a reduced opening, The bore at the lower end of said tubular portion also terminates in a reduced opening in the bottom flange of the device. Surrounding the opening in the top flange 3, is an annular flange 1l and also formed on the top face of said top flange 3, is an additional annular flange 12 which is of a diameter equal to the width of the top flange 3, at the center thereof. The provision of this latter flange on the device provides substantially a bowl-like member for a center plate support.
Formed integral with the faces of the web section l, below and above, respectively, the upper and lower flanges 3 and 4, are the additional upper and lower laterally eX- tending flanges 13 and 14, respectively. These flanges. at the central portion of the device are of slightly less width than the flanges 3 and 4t and the same taper somewhat toward their outer ends, as can be clearly seen from the dotted lines shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing and said flanges are braced to the web section 1, by means of the integral brace flanges or the like l5. These flanges 13 and 14 are arranged parallel to the flanges 3 and 4 and the upper additional ilangel is additionally braced by means of the additional brace flanges which are formed integral with the inner faces of the wall of the tubular member 10 and also integral with the under face of the upper additional flange 13, the same extending radially inward toward the center of the bowllike member. d
The central portion of a bolster of this character receives the greatest strain, as is well known and in order to aid this portion of my improved bolster to withstand the strainand shock received at this point, T- shaped supporting or bracing flanges 17 are formed between the upper and lower flanges 8 and 13, at the point at which'this substantial bowl-shaped member is formed. The shank portions of these substantial T-shaped bracing or supporting flanges extend inwardly toward the center of the device, as can be seen in dotted lines in Fig. 1, while the head portions thereof arel somewhat arcuately designed and arranged somewhat in circular alignement. Each head portion is spaced slightly from the other, as can be seen from Fig. 2 of the drawing and the same aline with the annular flange 12, as clearly shown in the section indicated 'as Fig. 3 yof the drawing. These flanges 17 are, as are all the other portions of the de# vice, cast integral with the flanges. It must be here stated that the webV and the flanges of the device are made of uniform thickness and this uniformity of 'metal in; sures a sound casting throughout, which Ais capable of withstanding the many shocks and strains received in practice and reduces the shrinkage strain to a minimum. It also provides a bolster which attainsthe greatest strength to withstand greater bending stress and shock than a bolster of disproporL tionate thickness. Ay bolster constructed in this manner also avoids the drawing of the metal which isat present necessary in the construction of holsters of this character.
By', providing the double flanges, as shown and described, at the top and bottom of the web of the bolster, agreater moment of injertia is obtained without constructing said flanges of greater thickness than the web, within a limited depth of section. It will also be seen that the flange 13 increases the moment of inertia at the center of the bolster and also acts as a center plate support, be'- ing reinforced by flanges 16, thereby per"- mitt-ing this bowl-shaped portion'of the de'- `vice to be made uniform in thickness with the other portions of the device and avoid draiving of the metal and shrinkage strain at the vital point of the bolster. From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention, and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is 1. A cast truck bolster consisting of a web, lateral flanges formed on the upper and lower edges thereof, additional upper and lower lateral flanges formed on said web and spaced slightly from the aforesaid flanges to form pairs of parallel flanges, and connecting means between the first mentioned upper and lower flanges at the ends thereof.
2. A cast t-ruck bolster comprising a web, lateral flanges formed on the upper and lower edges thereof and extending the full length of the same, and additional upper and lower lateral flanges formed on said web in spaced relation to the aforesaid flanges, said additional flanges being of less length and of less width than the first mentioned flanges and tapering smaller toward their outer ends. 3. A cast truck bolster comprising a web,
flanges formed on the upper and lower edges thereof, extending the full length of the same, side walls connecting said flanges at the outer ends thereof, and additional upper and lower flanges formed on the web in spaced relation to the aforesaid flanges, and terminating slightly in advance of the inner opposed ends of said side walls.
4:. A cast truck bolster comprising a central web, flanges formed on the upper and lower edges thereof and extending the full length of the same, additional flanges formed on said web in spaced relation to the aforesaid flanges, bracing webs formed between the central web andthe last mentioned flanges, and additional bracing means formed between the central portions of the upper flanges of the device.
A cast truck bolster comprising a central web having a tubular portion formed centrallyY thereof, flanges formed on the lipper and lower edges of said web having the terminal openings of said tubular portion therein, an annular flange immediately surrounding the tubular opening in the upper flange 4of the web, an additional annular flange formed on said upper flange to surround the first mentioned annular flange and form a substantial bowl-like member on the upper flange of the device, and bracing means for the central portion of the up-y per flange on the web.
6, A cast truck bolster comprising a central web having a tubular portion formed centrally thereof, flanges formed 'on the upper edges of said web and having the terminal openings of said tubular portion therein,
additional upper and lower flanges formed on said web in spaced relation to the aforesaid flanges, annular fianges formed on the top face of the flange on the upper edge of the web and forming a bowl-like member thereon, bracing means formed between the upper flanges of the web to brace the afore said bowl-like member, and additional bracing means formed between the additional flanges and said central web.
'7. A cast truck bolster comprising a web, lateral flanges formed on the upper and lower edges thereof and extending the full length of the same, pairs of additional laterally extending flanges formed on the web in slightly spaced relation to the aforesaid flanges and parallel thereto, said last mentioned flanges terminating some distance in advance of the ends of the web, a tubular member formed centrally of said web and having the ends thereof terminating in openings in the first mentioned upper and lower flanges, substantial T-shaped bracing members formed between the upper parallel anges on said web, additional bracing mea-ns formed between the additional flanges and said web, and annular flanges formed on the top of the upper of the first mentioned flanges on the web to form substantially a bowl-shaped member thereon.
