SIGVART A. KIRKNESS, OF LAKE PARK, MINNESOTA.
SEPARABLE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIGVART A. KIRKNESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Park, in the county of Becker and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- ,1 pertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a separable fastener especially designed for use on shoes, but capable of other adaptations, which is of extremely simple and practical construction.
Another and more specific object of the invention is to provide a separable fastener of the multiple, step adjusting type, including a plate formed with hook receiving recesses having the inner walls thereof stepped and a plurality of hooks for en: gagement With said steps, the hooks being slidable laterally upon retaining rods or connections.
As a further object, the invention aims to provide a fastener 'for shoes which is entirely concealed and which allows for adjustably connecting the edges of the upper adjacent the instep opening.
With these and other objects in view, as 1 will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the follow ing description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a shoe and my improved fastener secured thereto, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view, showing one of the hooks in engagement with the plate, the upper of the shoe being illustrated by dotted lines, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the hooks or catches. 7
Referring in detail to the drawings by Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 13, 1913.
numerals, 5 designates, as an entirety, the
plate which forms one part of my improved separable fastener. This plate is preferably formed of light flexible steel in the form of a narrow strip having hook receiving re 1 FASTENER.
Patented Mar. 24, 1914. Serial No. 806,502.
cesses 6 opening upon the inner edge thereof. The inner wall of each of the recesses is of a stepped formation providing the steps or shoulders 7 8 and 9. I have shown the plate 5 secured to the inner side of the shoe upper 10 adjacent one edge of the instep openlng by means of suitable fasteners 11. It will be noted upon reference to Fig.
1 that the upper projects a slight distance beyond the plate 5 forming, what might be termed, a flap 12.
' For locking engagement with the inner wall of each of the recesses 6, I provide a hook 13 having a shank 14 formed upon one end with a bill 15. The shank is formed intermediate its ends with a tubular enlargement or, what might be termed, a sleeve 16 to receive a securing rod 17. The rod 17 is secured to the outer face of the upper end on the opposite side of the intake openin from ,the plate 5 parallel to the edge 18. Tile hooks 13 are slidable laterally along these rods, may pivot about them, and pro ect at essentially right angles to the edge 18 having their bills 15 close to the edge 18.
When it is desired to close the upper about the foot of'the wearer, the plate 5 is moved into engagement with the outer sides or faces of the hooks 13 and the bills of the hooks are engaged with the steps or shoulders 7, 8 or 9, depending upon whether a loose or tight fit is desired. This form of fastener makes it unnecessary to adjust the retaining bars 17 after they have once been secured to the upper 10, for the purpose of properly closing the instep opening. To unclasp the hooks from the plate 5, they are moved upwardly opposite the steps or shoulders 7 after which the plate may be easily moved laterally away from engagement with the bills of the hooks.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be evident that I have provided a very simple, practical and highly eflicient separable fastener which is completely concealed when in use and the parts of which may be quickly connected and disconnected.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A separable fastener comprising a plate formed with a hook receiving recess having one wall thereof stepped, a hook for removable engagement with said steps and means for mounting the hook to permit a lateral movement thereof whereby it may be engaged with different steps.
2. A separable fastener comprising a plate formed with a hook receiving recess opening upon one edge thereof, the inner wall of the recess being stepped, a hook eX- tending transversely across the plate and having a bill for engagement with step, and a pivot rod, said hook being slidably and rotatably mounted on said rod.
3. A separable fastener comprising a flexible plate of an elongated shape havin a hook receiving recess opening upon one ec ge thereof, the inner wall of the recess being stepped forming shoulders parallelling the recessed edge, a hook extending transversely of the plate having its bill for removable engagement with said step, a pivot rod for the hook extending parallel to the plate, said hook being formed with an opening to receive the rod and permit a lateral movement of the hook therealong.
4-. In combination with a flexible member, a separable fastener comprising an elongated plate secured to said flexible member adjacent one end thereof, having a plurality of hook receiving recesses opening upon one of its edges, the inner walls of said recesses being stepped; a plurality of pivot rods secured to the flexible member adjacent the other end thereof and parallelling said plate, a hook connected to each of said rods having a bill and an enlarged central portion bored to receive the rod.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
