a uve/nto@ v UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE- WILLIAM H. IBEECHER, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ENVELGP.
To all whom z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BEECHER, a citizen of the Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to envelops, and more particularly to the class of fasteners for envelops, bags, packages or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision o-f .a device of this character in which an envelop, bag or the like may be readily. and conveniently closed for retaining its contents during transit, and that willenable t-he postal authorities to inspect the contents thereof without destroying` the same, also permitting the receiver to gain access thereto, without tearing or otherwise mutilating such envelop, bag or the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an envelop in which the mouth thereof may be folded and fastened, whereby the contents will be prevented from falling therefrom during transportation, and that will enable the easy opening of the ksame for removing the contents from the envelop, bag or the like.
A' further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the envelop will carry its contents with safety while in transit, without possibility of the same becoming accidentally opened, and also that will permit such envelop to be handled with ease without possibility of the same injuring other mail matter when packed therewit- A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is strong, simple of construction, thoroughly reliable and eiiicient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With th-ese and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and .arrangement of parts,`as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the'drawings: Figure l is a front elevation of an envelop constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a rea-r elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vfragmentary front elevation, showing the envelop folded. Fig. 4 is a similar view, looking toward the rearv face thereof. Fig. 5 is a sectional view- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed November 26, 19'10.
United States, residing at- Patented Mar. 24, 1914. Serial No. 594,327'.
on the line 5=5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a sect1on al .view on the line G-G of Fig. 4.
Simllar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings. i
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the envelop. comprises a body 5 which is formed from a single sheet of stili paper having a front section 6, side flaps 7. and a bottom flap 8, thelatter being folded in the usual manner and secured to the side flaps 7 which are also folded in the usual manner and overlap at' the back of the envelop, the overlapped portions of the side flaps `7 bc- Ing sealed in the usual way.'
Suitably secured, preferably sealed, to the back of the body 5 of the envelop is a flexible tongue 9, the same being formed at its free edge with a casing lO extending beyond opposite edges of the tongue S), the said opposite edges of the tongue being diagonally cut to provide downwardly converging edges 1l, the tongue 9 being sealed or otherwise secured to the body 5 for only a portion of its length, for a purpose as will behereinafter more fully described.
Arranged within the casing 10 is a bendable metallic strip 12, the same being coextensive with the casing l0. This casing 10 carrying the metallic strip 12is adapted to be folded outwardly and downwardly over the open end of the body 5, whence the latter is folded on itself about'the casing 10, whereupon the ends of the casing 10 are bent inwardly to overlie the back of the body 5 of the envelop, and to engage between the free portion of the tongue and the said body 5, thereby closing the mouth of the envelop, for retaining its contents during transit. It will be evident that the tongue 9 will, when the envelop is closed, prevent the bent ends of the reinforced casing 10 from accidentally becoming free or slipping out from between the tongue and the body of the envelop, thus assuring safety to the contents within the envelop during transportation.
What is claimed is: v
The combination with an envelop, of a substantially triangular-shaped tongue'having only one corner secured to one side of the envelop near'jt-he open end whereby thc major portion of said tongue will be freed therefrom and extended beyond the said open end, a easement formed at the outermost free edge of the tongue and extended y' Ico.
tion of the tongue and the side adjacent thereto of the said envelop.- l0
Y In testimon whereof I allilx my signatur in 'presence o two witnesses. f
