Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, PETER-W. THIESEN and JAcoB J. THIESEN, citizens of the United States, residing in the county of Tulare, State of California, have invented a new and useful Pump, of which the following is a specification.
.This invention relates to pumps and is more particularly designed as an improvement upon the structure disclosed in Patent #540,200, issued to J. J. Thiesen on May 28,1895.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide improved means whereby the pump can be actuated either by a windmill or by a hand lever, the connection between the pump rod and the actuating element being such as to permit either of said actuating elements to be readily coupled to or uncoupled from the pump rod.
Another object is to provide a pump which will discharge water overhead or at the bottom faucet without the necessity of utilizing a piston having water tight packing such as generally used. 7
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form ofthe invention has been shown.
In said drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pump having the present improvements combined therewith. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line A-B Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line CD Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on line EF Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a portion of the pump casing the same having an outflow pipe 2 near its upper end. A sleeve 3 is fitted on the upper end portion of the casing 1 and 15 secured thereto by a set screw 4 or in any other suitable manner. This sleeve has parallel arms 5 extending therefrom and arranged between and supported by the arms are spaced rollers 6. The pump rod has been indicated at 7 and secured to the upper end portion of this rod is a block 8 which is held fixedly upon the rod by means of a set screw 9 or the like. A connecting rod 10 is also secured to the block 8, as by means of a set screw 11, this connecting rod being extended downwardly between two of the guide rollers 6 and into a bracket 12. This bracket is formed of opposed strips having their terminals bowed so as to engage the pump casing 1 as indicated at 18, and bolts 14 or the likeare extended through the bracket close to these bowed portions so as to bind them tightly upon the pump casing and thus hold the bracket against movement relative to the casing. Spacing sleeves 15 may be inter posed between the sides of the bracket. A link 16 is supported within and connected to the lower portion of the bracket and is pivotally connected, as at 17, to a hand lever 18. A sleeve 19 is adjustably secured to the connecting rod 10 and one end of the lever 18 is detachably connected to this sleeve 19, as by means of a cotter pin 20.
Another sleeve 21 is adjustably secured to the connecting rod 10 and this sleeve is detachably and pivotally connected, as by means of a cotter pin 22, to spaced fingers 23 extending from the lower end of the actuating rod 24. This rod extends upwardly betweentwo of the guide rollers 6 and constitutes means for transmitting motion from a wind wheel to the connecting rod 10.
When it is desired to use a wind wheel as the sole power for actuating the pump, the cotter pin 20 is removed from engagement with sleeve 19, thus disconnecting lever 18 from the connecting rod 10. Obviously, the reciprocating of rod 24 will result in a corresponding movement of the connecting rod 10 and as this connecting rod is moved upwardly and downwardly, motion will be transmitted therefrom through the block 9 to the pump rod 7. Should it be desired to actuate the pump solely by hand,
the cotter pin 22 is removed, thus disconnecting rod 24 from sleeve 21. Lever 18 is then pivotally connected to sleeve 19 as by means of cotter pin 20. Thus it will be seen that by working the lever 18 upwardly and downwardly, the reciprocation of rod 10 will be effected and the pump rod 7 will thus be actuated.
By utilizing the rollers 6, the rods 24 and 10 are not only held properly spaced apart but friction is reduced to the minimum. As the sleeves 19 and 21 and the block 8 are all adjustably mounted, it will be seen that the various parts can be arranged in any desired relation to each other so as to produce the desired result.
Rod 24- is preferably extended downwardly below the sleeve 21 so that, when the windmill is disconnected and the pump is operated by hand, the end of the rod will not become caught.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a pump casing and a pump rod extending therefrom, of a connecting rod, a connection between the rods, a bracket made up of opposed similar members having casing engaging portions, means connecting said members of the bracket for binding said portions upon the casing to hold the bracket fixed relative to the casing, a hand operated lever movably mounted in the bracket, a sleeve pivotally engaged by the lever and slidable longitudinally along the connecting rod, means carried by the sleeve for engaging the connecting rod to hold the sleeve against movement relative to said rod, an actuating rod parallel with the first named rods and extending downwardly close to the bracket, a sleeve adapted to slide longitudinally along the connecting rod, means carried by the sleeve for engaging the connecting rod, to hold the sleeve against movement relative to the rod, and a pivotal connection between said sleeve and the actuating rod, said sleeve being normally positioned close to the bracket.
2. The combination with a pump casing and a pump rod extending therefrom, of a connecting rod, a connection between the rods, a bracket made up of opposed similar members having casing engaging portions, means connecting said members of the bracket for binding said portions upon the casing to hold the bracket fixed relative to the casing, a hand operated lever movably mounted in the bracket, a sleeve pivotally engaged by the lever and slid-able longitudinally along the connecting rod, means carried by the sleeve for engaging the connecting rod to hold the sleeve against movement relative to said rod, an actuating rod parallel with the first named rods and extending downwardly close to the bracket, a sleeve adapted to slide longitudinally along the connecting rod, means carried by the sleeve for engaging the connecting rod to hold the sleeve against movement relative to the rod, a pivotal connection between said sleeve and the actuating rod, said sleeve being normally positioned close to the bracket, arms adjustably connected to the pump casing and extending radially therefrom, said actuating and connecting rods being extended between the arms, and anti-friction guide devices supported by the arms and extending between and across the outer portions of the rods.
