LAURITS OLUF LARSEN, OF PERTH AMBOY, NEW JERSEY.
LIFE-BOAT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LAURITS OLUr LARSEN, a citizen of Denmark, residing at Perth Amboy, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in collapsible life boats and its object is to produce a boat of this class that is readily assembled and locked in operative position and as readily collapsed; lightness, durability and cheapness of manufacture are other objects.
The boat comprises a plurality of longitudinal ribs terminally hinged to the keel and connected by a canvas covering. and transverse ribs adapted to retain the longitudinal ribs in assembled position.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of the specification and in which Figure 1 is a plan of my boat in assembled position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the boat collapsed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on line 3-8 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a transverse section taken on line 4.4; of Fig- 1. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1 after the boat has been collapsed.
Fig. 6 is a detail of the end of a cross rib in side elevation showing the fastening device employed. Fig. 7 is a plan of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a section taken on line 88 of Fig. 9. Fig. 9 is a detail plan of a portion of a longitudinal rib showing its connection with the cross rib and the fastening means for the two.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My boat comprises a keel 1 and to the extremities of the same the extremities of outer longitudinal ribs 2, 2 are hinged as at 3, 3. Intermediate longitudinal ribs 4, 4 shorter than the outer ribs are also hinged to the keel 1 bet-ween its extremities as at 5, 5. Sec ondary intermediate ribs 6, 6 shorter than the intermediate ribs 4, 4: are also terminally hinged to the keel as at 7, 7 and inner longitudinal ribs 8, 8 are hinged to the keel as at 9, 9. The bases of the several longitudinal Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. January 17, 1913.
Patented Mar. 24%, 191a. Serial No. 742,674.
ribs are covered with a continuous canvas covering 10 which when the ribs are extended and in operative position is drawn taut and when the ribs are in inoperative position, as shown in Fig. 5, hangs in folds as shown.
When in assembled position the longitudinal ribs are kept in place through the medium of a plurality of transverse ribs 11. The ends of these ribs pass through the outer longitudinal ribs and are reduced as at 12 and apertured to receive the end 13 of an angular pin 14 provided with a knob 15 and held in operative position by a spring 16 secured to the longitudinal rib. The body of the cross rib is notched to engage the several longitudinal ribs between the outer longitudinal ribs are drawn away from the keel laterally as far as the hinges will permit and the cross ribs then placed in position to hold said longitudinal ribs operative. A canvas top may be secured to the outer longitudinal ribs if desired.
What is claimed is 1. In a collapsible life boat comprising longitudinal ribs and cross ribs adapted to interlock therewith, friction fingers carried by said longitudinal ribs for releasable engagement with said cross ribs, pins carried by said longitudinal ribs for releasable engagement with the terminations of said cross ribs and yieldable locking means carried by said longitudinal ribs for engagement with said pins to retain them in operative position.
2. In a collapsible life boat comprising longitudinal ribs and cross ribs adapted to interlock therewith, friction fingers carried by said longitudinal ribs for releasable engagement with said cross ribs, pins carried by said longitudinal ribs for releasable engagement with the terminations of said cross ribs, flexible locking means carried by said longitudinal ribs for engagement With said pins to normally retain them in operative position and handles for said pins whereby the said flexible locking means may 5 be thrown out of operative position to permit the collapse of the boat.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
LAURITS OLUF LARSEN. WVitnesses:
S. M. LIPsGOMB, MARGARET HARNED.
