To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT I-I. LAWRENCE,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to improvements in churns, and has for its object a receptacle supporting member, a clamping means, a resilient means attached to the upper and lower ends whereby the body is kept in con tinuous up and down movement when once motion is imparted to the same.
A further object is to construct a churn having a body portion in which is kept a receptacle and a resilient means whereby the body is kept in churning movement when once movement is imparted by pressing the body downwardly and then release.

Fig. 4, is a detail View of a port-ion of the stationary top showing the manner of supporting the removable side bar. Fig. 5, is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 8, is a detail vertical sectional view of a port-ion of the clamping top and locking dog in position on one of the side rods.
In the construct-ion of my invention I provide a body member consisting of a plurality of side rods 9, 10, and 11, and to the upper and lower ends of said rods are attached a top 12, and a bottom 13, which may be of solid or recticulated material, but must be of rigid nature. The bottom 13, being in practice heavier than the top, and a portion of the top 12, is constructed to be slightly springy at the side which is provided with a recess 14, as indicated in Fig. 5. At the mouth of the recess the material is bent upwardly in the form of 2 lugs 15, back of which is to be inserted and held the head 16, of the removable rod 17. The lower end of said rod is formed in the shape of an eye 18, passing through an opening19, formed in the bottom 13, acting as a hinge so that the rod 17 may be detached at its upper end from the top 12, and permitted to swing downwardly so that the receptacle 20, in WlllCll the material to be churned can be in sorted in the body between the supporting rods. The upper and lower ends of the rods 9 and 10 are provided with eyes 21, in which the springs 22 and 23 are attached. The opposite ends of said springs are supported to the looped ends 24 of the brackets 25. These brackets are in turn, provided with loops 26, to which it attached a cord, wire, or any other fastening means 27, by which the churn is supported in a vertical position between the floor or ceiling, or between special brackets fastened to the wall.
On the rods 9 and 10 is slidably mounted a clamping top 28, the same being preferably conical in form so as to properly center the receptacle which is placed in the body, and when said top is adjusted in position on the top of the receptacle it prevents the same from moving laterally in the body. This top 1s provided with ears 29, which have perf0 rations for supporting the top on the rods, and beneath the top are hingedly attached locking dogs 30, which are also provided with perforations 31; through which the rods are inserted and between the same and the ears are placed springs 32, or other means for holding the locking dogs in a normal clamping position. And when desiring to release the top from the receptacle or container, the said top can be shifted by raising the locking dogs upwardly compressing the springs 32. In this manner the clamping feature against the rods is released and the top can be readily and easily adjusted to accommodate the height of the container held in the body.
The device is simple in construction and the essential feature is to construct an inexpensive churn in which any kind of receptacle or container can be placed and firmly held, and by mere pressing the body downwardly and then release, the churn will have a continuous reciprocatory movement thereby agitating the contents of the receptacle.
It has been found from experience that cream can be converted into butter by this device in a few minutes; and when the device is once started the action of the springs causes the body to reciprocate and it is only necessary to apply pressure by the hand but occasionally. The springs by which the body portion is supported, and for placing the same in reciprocatory movement may be constructed of difierent tension, that is to say, the upper springs may be of greater tension than the lower springs or reverse.
Having fully described my invention what I claim is:

A churn comprising a body portion in which a receptacle is supported, an adjustable clamping top, a resilient means connected to the top and bottom of the body and by which the body is kept in reciprocatory movement when started, and clamps located on the adjustable top for supporting ghel same in position, substantially as speci- 2.
