IBDX-FASTENER menace.
Application filed June 17. 1913.
Specification of Letters Patent.
lattnitetl llll'ar.11),ilblet.
Serial No. 774,231.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, i. ETON llovoium, a citizen of the United States, residingat Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful .lmprovernents tin BoX-liastencrs, of which the following is; a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for fastening down the lid of crates; and other boxes. and its object is to provide a simple and ellicient fastening: which will securely hold. the lid (.lUSGt... said :t'antening being constrturted to permit the application of a seal or pad-lock.
In order that; the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which-* Il ignre 1 in a perspective view oil a crate comp ied with the :liaatening device. big. 9 is a cross section of the crate on the line 2--2 ct hit 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective View ot the 1'? hing member. Fig. -11. is a perspective view oi the keeper for the 'l'aslening member. ltig. is a section on the line 5 of :liig. 2.
l teiterring specifically to the dra tinge, the walls of the crate are solid panels: a.-;sembled and fastened together in any suitable manner. The panel for-tiling the front wall of the crate is cmnetructed of boards 5 nailed or stapled to top and bottom strips (3 and 7, respectively, ext-ending throughout the entire length of the panel. said Stripe being on the outer face of the panel. The crate has hiitag'ed lid composed of bearer-s or strips ti nailed or stapled to front and rear Eitt'lllb 9 and 10, respectively, ex "idinn tln'ouglmut; the entire gg'l'h at the lid, 5 let'ripn being on the top oi the boards. Tilidway between its ends, the 'irtmt strip 9 is ut away at its front edge to term a recess 11, and on the top surface of the board 8, expos-eed by said recess, in mounted a metal plate 19 having an upward bend til at one end to engage the rear edge of the strip, and a downward bend lot at the opposite end to engage the trout edge of said board. The plate 12 has an upstanding car 15 provided with a periloration 16.
".he car may be struck up "from the plate.
Between the top strip 6 and the middle board 5 of the front wall of the crate is mounted a stem 17 having lateral bends and 19, respectively, at its ends, said bends being in opposite directions and forming hooks. The faces of the parts 5 and 6 may be grooved to 'fOlltl a seat for the stem, the latter being rotatable tor a purpose to be presently described. in the strip 6 is an aperture 20 into which the bend 18 extends. 'lo fasten the lid down, the stem 1! 1H rotated until the bend it) extends across the top oi. the plate It) alongside the car 155. The bend It) has an aperture 531 which registers with the pt-rl'oratimi it; when the parts are in this position. so that a 8021i or shackle ot' a padlock may he passed through. the registering aperture and pertoration to lock the lid.
(in one side of the car 15 the plate 12 has a protulan'am'e or upward bulge 52 over which the part it) must be chapped before it comes alongside the tongue. this will hold the part it) from swinging bark oil the plate '12. it a seal or padlock is; not need and the lid will be securely held closed. lhe lid can be easily released by simply swing ing the part l ll back sulliciently to clear the plate 12. The bend it) in resilient. so that it, may be snapped over the bulge '22 as described.
'lwo small triangular tongues 23 are punched downward out of the plate l).and when said plate is mounted on the board 8, the ton 'ue;-- are driven into said board, whereby an additional Fastening; meana for the plate is provided. and rattling; and looncning' oil the same is prevented.
l claim:
ft, box having a lim ed lid. a. strip extending lengthwise acrosa the forward portion ot' the lid and having its front edge recessed. a plate mounted on the lid beneath the recess of the strip. said plate having bends in opptnsit'e directions at its: end, one of which bends engages the trout edge oi the lid, and the other bend the rear edge oi the slrip, an upstanding 1nu-forated car on the plate. and a stem carried by the box wall and having a lateral bend. said stem being rotatable to locate the bend tHil'OSfi the plate alongside the ear, the bend having an aperture to register with the perforation of the ear.
in testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witneascs.
