UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO G. MOULTON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOLT-OPERATING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,010, dated September 29, 1885.
Application filed August 14, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LORENZO G. MoULToN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Looking Mechanism for Cell-Doors, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a secure and quick-working method for fastening and unfastening a series of doors, as the cell-doors in a jail. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section showing my invention as applied to the upper part of a cell-door. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Figs. 4 and 5 show a modification of the looking device.
In the drawings, A represents a slot or opening in the ordinary cast-iron lintel, F, which supports the masonry over the dooropenings.
Bis a movable piece, one end of which is fastened to a common looking-bar, G, which passes along over and in front of the celldoors, while the other end passes down through the slot A in front of the top of the door H when shut.
O is a box or cover in which the movable piece B works.
D is a rib which reaches part way across the box 0 and projects down from its top nearly to the movable piece B when in position. This box or cover 0 is open in front,
(No model.)
so as to allow the movable piece B to be freely inserted, and its end passes down through the slot A, when it is moved by the looking-bar, in front of the door and under the rib D, which prevents it from rising, While the edge of the slot A in the lintel enables the piece B to resist any pressure from Within.
In a modification of my locking mechanism, as shown in Figs. t and 5, the box 0 is provided with a second rib, E, which reaches quite across the box, about midway between the rib D and the locking-bar G. The rib E has an opening in its under side, through which the piece B is inserted, which serves also as a fulcrum for the piece B, one end of which is fastened to the lockingbarin such manner as to allow it to swing freely as the bar is moved, while the oth r end swings in the slot A, which in this case is cut in a circular form instead of being straight, as in the other described style.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is The lintel provided with the slot A, the movable piece B, the box or cover 0, provided with the rib D, in combination with the locking-bar G, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 11th day of August, A. D. 1885.
LORENZO G. MOULTON.
