Be it, known that I, HENRY Annex, of St. Louis, 1n the county 'of St. Lous and State .of Missouri,
have invented a new and improved Elcctrodlfagnetic Lock'jand'I do hereby 'declare that the following is 'a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
" 'which' will enable othersskilled in the art to make :andtnse the'same, reference being had .to the accom;
panynig drawing forming part of this specification.
:Figure Il' represents a sidc'view ot my improved electromagnetic lock.
ligure 2 isa.' face o r front view of tlic'samc. 1* igure 3 1s a plan or topvicw ol thc same.
"'Figme 'isf'a diagrfn, showing the general arranges `nent of conductors.
. parts.`
`My invention has for iltsobjc-ct toco construct al lock for safes, faults, .860., that thc saine may heop crated entirely-by electricity, whereby the bolts may be withdrawn'. r
'Theinvent-ion consistsehictly in combining the'bolts of fthe lockjwith an electro-magnet, which, when charged, will serve to withdraw the bolts so as to iin-- 'lock the doorn'.l
By this arrangement the ylock can he arranged wit-hin the bodyof'th'e' lsafe, and -rlccd not be attached to the door, exceptlie part thatlocks from or into the door.
The key-board `for directingthe currents of the scveral'conductors need not he attached to the safe or door, but may he arranged atany suitable distance from the safe or in a ditierent room or building.
The invention consists 'also in thc construction of the combination-rods, which arcppointcrs projecting from revolving disks, and oonnecting'thc broken fragments of a conductor or conductors for working the l t, bolt crother part of the lock.
The invention consists also in the application to such an electric combination lock of an alarm-bell, which is' 'worked by branches from the main conductors.
' Finally, theinvention consists in the application to .the revolving disks of arms that connect the. branch conductors whichA operate the bell.
A A'A in the drawing is a series of electro-magnets, connected, by means pt'wircs a b, with the poles egrphic instruments, is connected with one of the wires a b, to establish the current through `the same whenever desired. '.Lhc position ot' the key c is indicated in the diagram, fig. 4-.f
--B isashaftixedinaframe,0. c
Upon it is hung a. series of ratchet-wheels, D-D,
I the teeth. of cach wheel being marked or numbered.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspoinling'v each carrying an armature, l, forone ofthe electromagnets A.
1To each lever 1s pivfted, or with it is connected, a
single or double pawl or levcr, ll, whereby, during the oscillations of said lever, intermittent rot-ary mot-ion is imparted to one of the ratchet-wheels D.
Each wheel Dhas a projecting arm, e, with a pivoted or other insulated metallic plate, f, which, when it strikes the ends `of a pair of wires, gli., connects 'thc same. 'A pair of such wires g lt is connected with and projects from cach pair of wires a b. By means of weights, i, or springs, the levers .E arc helghway from' thema-nets A.
. .Each wire g is, by a branch, 7,connectcd with abell,
G, on the key-board, and through the inetajic clap- .per H of said bell. and a'small wire, K, or any-other 'equivalent connection with an electro-magnet, I, which is fixed -near the bellto .withdraw thc clapper, thewires h having other blanches lr that reach also to the magnet -I,- while 'a spring, 1,'serves to couteract the I .magnet I, '1'. c.,.to hold the clapperagainst the bell.
J is Vanother electro-magnet set opposite tothe bolt I 1,or any other part of the lock, which, when attracted? by said magnet, will cause thc cntireor partial open-l -ing of the lock.
The magnet J is, by means of wires m n, connected with a battery; onel wire, n, isset .up in fragments betwccn the several wheels D.
Each wheel D has, pivotcd or otherwise adj ustably applied to it, an arm or lever, M,. which can be set at will opposite to any suitable toothof its wheel. This' arm or wheel carries a metallic insulated plate, o,
which, when it strikes the wire n, connects twofragments of thc same. The operation is as iollows:`
Whenever, by a key, the current through a pair of wires a b is established, the Aarmature F opposite the magnet A, pertainingto such wires, is attracted by its magnet, and this motion causes the lever E toturn its wheel l).
'When the wheclD has been so far turned as to bring the plate o of its' Vlever M in contact with the wire n, the next key is worked until allits plates o are vincontactwith' the n, connecting the several sec-V tions ofthc same `and establishing a current through the magnet J. '.lhen thearmature p on the boltL is attracted to unlock the door. Not until all the plates o are incontact with .the several sections of the wire n will the 'door be unlocked. As the disks D are,
however, concealed within the safe, it will b e impossiblel for any one .not lmowing the combination to uw vlock the safe.
The key is furnished hythelbelfl; the current through sind @titte t bell rings .theigure lis opposite toog..
more, the arm M is setat 10, the= ringing of the-bell i or .arrangement of mechanism i the spirit of my invention. i 4of the conductor n, I- can,

are set cannot possibly be ascertained from tlieapp'a1-.
ratus, the lock will be absolutely safe. Tl1ecombination is changed by varying the positionsiof'the arms M onth disks D. l
