ly invention relates to new and useful improvements in separable body holsters,` that is, a body bolster having a portion which can be easily and quickly applied or detached so as to permit the bolster to be readily combined with the center sills and draft sills oil a car underirame.
rThe/principal objects of my invention are to construct a simple,1 inexpensive body bol, ster, of cast metal, and to form an opening through'the central portion of said bolster :for the accommodation of the center sills of the underframe; to provide a readily detachable center plate which spans the opening in the bolster, which plate is provided.
with a center bearing; 'and further to provide overlapping Webs or iianges on the bolster and the detachable plate, which Webs or flanges are attached to each other and form a strut between the detachable plate and the upper part of the body bolster.
whereby the centralportion of the latter is materially strengthened and reinforced.
A further object ol my invention is .to
.provide a simple, strong and rigid car undertrame construction including centersills bodyl bolster, and draft sills., which-'construction can be easily assembled, or-in the tese oit repairs, can be easily taken apart.,
'lio the above pmi-poses5 my inventioncon,
a employ a pair ot center sills,
each comprising,r a ver,-
and lower edges of which are xed angles ll. the' samebeing arranged so that their horizontal flanges are outwardly presented. Positioned on top of the center sills thus formed and attached to 'the horizontal flanges of the upper pair of angles 1l is a cover plate l2. The Web plates l0 of the center sills are provided'in their end por tions with longitudinally disposed slots 13 which are for the accommodationof the flange of the body bolster. This body bolster is preferably cast in a single pieqp and comprises a vertically disposed web 14,A a top Hangs l5, and a bottom flange 16. Thus lsaid bolster is substantially of l beam shape 1n cross section. The central portion of body bolster is preferably depressed with respect to its ends and the central portion 4forced with longitudinally disposed ribs 15" occupies the inner ends of the'slots 13. The' length of these slots is approximately twice the Width of the top flange 154so that when the body bolster is properly assembled with the center sills the ends of the latter. project a short distance beyond the body bolster.
An opening 17 is formed at the center of the body bolster, which opening accommodates the lower portions of theA center sillsv and a removable plate, hereinafter more fully described, and formed on the edges of the webs 14 adjacent to this opening are reinforcing ribs' or flanges 18. Eorined integral with the top flange 15 of the bodybolster near one edge thereof extending downward into the opening 17 is a vertically disposed web plate 19..
The separable portion of the body bolster V.which spans the spacelhetween the endsof the'bottom delige 16 at the sides of the openinfg` comprise a plate 20, preferably of cast' metal, the ends oi which occupy suitable seatsor recesses 2l "termed in the undersid'es oi the bottom flange le. lihisplate is deof suitable fastening devices, such as bolts or rivets 22, and formed integral with the' underside of said plate 1s a center bearing 20' 'which is adapted to engage a correspondof the top flange which is preferably reintieally disposed web plate 10, to the upper tachably ned to the bottom plate by'means rivets.
' against the front edge ot the 10 of the center sills.
ing center bearing on the truck bolster. When this plate is properly applied to the bolster, it bears directly against the horizontally disposed flanges of the lower pairs of angles 11 and againsty the lower edges of the web plates 10.
Formed integral with the plate 2O near one side thereof is an upwardly projecting web plate 23, which, when the plate 20 is properly positioned on'the bolster, lies immediately against the depending-web plate 19. These two web plates are fixed to each other in any suitable manner, preferably by means of rivets, and thus a strong vertically disposed strut is formed between the detachable plateI 20 and the top flange 15 of the bolster. This'strut formed by the plates 19 and 23 lies wholly between the web plates Formed integral with the ends of the web plate 23 and with the plate 20 are web plates or lflanges 24: which are arranged substantially at right angles to said plate 23 and these plates 24 are posi# tioned against the inner faces of the web plate 10 and being fixed thereto in any suitable manner, preferably by means of ,When the bolster is.properly combined with the center sills, the top flange 15 occupies the rear portion of the slot 13 and thus the' end portions of the center sills project beyond the bolster. Fixed to these projecting ends, preferably by means of rivets, are the rear ends of draft sills 25 which are preferably channel shaped in cross section with their flanges outwardly presented, and the -rear ends of these draft sills ybear directly top flange 15. The outer ends of these draft sills are attached in any suitable manner tothe end sill vthe center sills project,
26 of the underframe, By depressing the central portion of the body bolsterthe tops of the side sills 27 of the car underframe to which the ends of the bolster are lined occupy approximately the same horizontal plane with the top plate 12 that is attached to the center sills. The body bolster is pret'- erably formed with integral side bearing members 28 and with project-ing plates 29 to receive nailing strips.
In combining my improved body bolster with a ear underframe, said bolster is positioned with the central portion ot the top flange 15 in the rear portions of theslots 13, after which the plate 20 is applied to the underside of the bolster' beneath the center sills. The bolts or rivets 22 are nw applied through suitable apertures in the ends of the plate 20 and the bottom flange 14 after which the rivets or fastening devices are applied through suitable apertures in the web plates 19. and 23. The web plates 24: are attached to the center sills by suitable tastening devices` such as rivets, and therear ends @foie dma Sais 25 are attached t@ ai@ @Das l 'of the center sills which project beyond the body bolster.
By slotting the center sills to accommodate a portion of the body bolster and making a part of said body bolster separable and removable, said bolster can be very easily and quickly applied to the center sills, when the car underframe is assembled, or in case otrepairs, it will be a comparatively easy/.matter 'to remove the body bolster from the center sills. The strut formed by the attached web plates 19 and 23 materially strengthens the central portion of the bolster and such construction also serves rable or detachable plate with the main body portion of the bolster.
It will be readily' understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts in my improved bolster may be made and substituted for those herein shown anddescribed without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth inthe appended claims.
claim r' 1. In car construction, the combination with center sills provided in their ends with slots, of a body bolster attached to said center sills, a portion of which body bolster occupies said slots, a center bearing plate detachably applied to the bolster beneath the center sills, and a pair of overlapping plates on said bolster and center bearing plate between the center sills, which overlapping plates are connected to form a strut.
2. ln car construction, the combination with slotted center sills, of a body bolster having an opening through 'which parts of parts of which bolster occupy the slots in the center sills 'so that the latter project entirely through said bolster, a separable center bearing plate at tached to the bolster and spanning the lower portion of the opening therein, a web plate integral with said center bearing plate, and a web plate integral with the upper portion of the bolster, which web plates are attached to each other to form a strut between the center bearing plate and the upper portion of the bolster'.
The herein described body bolster iriving a single opening near its center ladapted to receive parts orn sills, which are slotted so that the endportions of the sills project entirely through said bolster', a separable center bearing plate applied to the bolster and spanning the opening therein, and a strut between said center bearing plate and the upper portion of the bolster.
el. Thev herein described body bolster having an opening` near its center adapted to receive parts of sills having slotted end p'ortions which engage with and project entirely through the opening in the bolster, a separable center bearing plate applied si? @amples 'bostef having am o p-LS of the center SL a@ "sose To mmbes ini/@gral W1 between the Centex sills-a wm attached? 13o @sich o msdunony Wheeoi' the presence vof 'Wo vsfmsss, ay of May, 1913.
