SWITCH-STAND LOOK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES 001), a citizen of the United States, residing at Moul' ton, in the county of Appanoose and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Switch-Stand Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in switch stand locks, and has for its object the provision of a simple, inexpensive device of the character specified, capable of being applied to existing stands without radical change, by means of which, the dropping of the operating lever into inoperative position after setting the switch to either position will positively lock the switch, that is will lock the operating lever to the stand.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved lock. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the look.
In the present embodiment of the invention the stand is of any usual construction, having the table 1 provided with spaced notches 2 and 3, for receiving the operating lever 4, which is pivoted at its inner end to the arm 5 of the switch rod or shaft 6. The arm 5 is provided with a notch 7 for receiving the inner end of lever 4e, and the lever is pivoted to the arm 5 by means of a bolt 8. When the lever is swung into horizontal position, the inner end thereof fits the notch 7, and the lever is by the same movement released from notch 2 or 3, so that the switch rod may be turned.
An angle plate 91O has its horizontal portion 9 secured to the upper face of the arm 5, in such manner, that one face of the vertical portion 10 of the plate is in alinement with one wall of the notch 7. The body 11 of a padlock is held by the plate, in position to receive the shackle 12 of the padlock, which is held by lever 1, when the lever is in inoperative position. The body 11 of the padlock is secured to the portion 10 of the plate-9-10 by means of a link 13, arranged on the opposite side of the body from the portion 10, and connected to the said portion by means of bolts let and 15. The link 13 is of greater length than the width of the body, extending beyond the Specification of Letters Patent.

body at both ends of the link, and the bolt 14 is passed through the inner end of the link and the portion 10 of the plate 9-1O while the bolt 15 is passed through the outer end of the link and the said portion 10. As an additional holding means, a bolt 25 is passed through the portion 10 of the plate 910 and the lug 2 1 of the body. The shackle 12 is secured to the reduced upper or inner end 16 of the lever 4-, by means of a link or strap 17. The said link is 0011- nected to the end 16 of the lever by means of a bolt 18. The link is engaged in a longitudinal slotor opening 19 in the portion 16, and the bolt 18 passed transversely of the said slot or opening through the end of the strap or link as shown in Fig. 2. The opposite end of the link 17 is connected to the shackle by means of a bolt 20, and the shackle is hinged to the body of the padlock in the usual manner as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The link 13 on the body is arranged above the keyhole 23, so that the said link will not interfere with the in sertion of a key. The body 11 of the padlock is provided with the usual perforated lug 24, for receiving one end of a chain. The said lug is however engaged by a bolt 25, instead of the chain, the bolt engaging also the portion 10 of plate 910. The body 11 of the padlock is held in position to receive the bolt 26 of the shackle 12, when the lever l is engaged with notch 2 or 3, and as the class of padlocks are spring locks, the mere act of dropping the lever into inoperative position also looks the switch, by engaging bolt 26 of shackle 1,2 with the body 11.
In operation, when the lock 11- 12 is unlocked by the usual key, lever 4. may be lifted into horizontal position to operate the switch. After the switch has been thrown into either position, the dropping of lever 4 into inoperative position also looks the lever in such position. The element of human error is thus eliminated, that is so far as failure to lock the switch is concerned. lVhen the switch has been returned to normal position, the operating lever is released, and drops into one of the notches of the stand. The releasing of the lever locks the lever to prevent it from disengagement with the notch.
It will be noted that the entire padlock is carried by the arm 5, and that the switch is locked in either main line or siding posi tions. The lever is not only locked from being moved into alinement wit-h arm 5, that is from movement into horizontal position, but is also looked in the notch of the table.
I claim:
1. In combination with the switch stand, the operating shaft, and the laterally disposed arm secured to the shaft and provided with a recess for receiving the operat ing lever when said lever is in alinement with the arm, and the operating lever pivoted to the arm, of means for locking the operating lever to the stand when said lever is swung out of alinement with the arm, said means comprising a padlock composed of a locking body having a perforated lug, and a shackle,means for securing the shackle to the lever, and means for securing the body to the arm in position to receive the bolt on the shackle when the lever is swung out of alinement with the arm, said first named means comprising a link, a bolt passing through the link at each end thereof, the outermost bolt passing through the shackle and connecting the link thereto, and the innermost bolt passing through the inner end of the lever, said lever having a slot for receiving the adjacent end of the link, said last-named means comprising a link, a bolt passing through the link at each end, and a bracket plate secured to the arm and having openings for the last-named bolts, each of the said last-named bolts passing through one of the said openings.
2. In combination with the switch stand, the operating shaft, and the laterally disposed arm secured to the shaft and provided with a recess for receiving the operating lever when said lever is in alinement with the arm, and the operating lever pivoted to the arm, of means for locking the operating lever to the arm when said lever is swung out of alinement with the arm, said means comprising a padlock composed of a locking body, and a shackle, means for securing the shackle to the lever, and means for securing the body to the arm in position to receive the bolt on the shackle when the lever is swung out of alinement with the arm, said first named means comprising a link, a bolt passing through each end of the link, said shackle having a perforated lug for receiving the outermost bolt, the inner end of the lever having an opening for engagement by the innermost bolt, said last named means comprising a link, a bolt passing through each end of the link, and a bracket plate secured to the stand and having openings for receiving the bolts.
8. In combination with the switch stand,
the operating shaft, and the laterally disposed arm secured to the shaft and provided with a recess for receiving the operating lever when said lever is in alinement with the arm and the operating lever pivoted to the arm, of means for locking the operating lever to the arm when said lever is swung out of alinement with the arm, said means comprising a padlock composed of a locking body, and a shackle, means for securing the shackle to the lever, and means for secur ing the body to the arm in position to receive the bolt on the shackle when the lever is swung out of alinement with the arm, the said means comprising a link for the body and a link for the shackle, bolts passing through each end of each link, the shackle and the inner end of the lever having each a perforation for receiving one of the bolts, and a plate secured to the stand for engagement by the bolts passing through the ends of the link of the body.
4:. In combination with the switch stand, the operating shaft, and the laterally disposed arm secured to the shaft and provided with a recess for receiving the operating lever when said lever is in alinement with the arm, and the operating lever pivoted to the arm, of means for locking the operating lever to the arm when said lever is swung out of alinement with the arm, said means comprising a padlock composed of a locking body, and a shackle, means for securing the shackle to the lever, and means for securing the body to the arm in position to receive the bolt on the shackle when the lever is swung out of alinement with the arm.
5. In combination with the switch stand, the shaft, the operating lever, and the connect-ion between the said lever and the shaft for permitting the lever to swing on an axis transverse to the shaft and for preventing angular movement of the lever with respect to the shaft, of a padlock comprising a body and a shackle, means for securing the shackle to the lever, and means for securing the body to the shaft in such relative position that when the lever is swung out of operative position with respect to the shaft and into inoperative position with the switch closed the shackle will engage the body.
6. In combination with the operating shaft of the switch, the lateral arm secured thereto, the lever pivoted to the arm, and the stand having notches for receiving the lever when in inoperative position out of alinement with the arm, of means carried by the lever and the arm for locking the lever out of alinement with the arm and in either notch of the stand, said means comprising a padlock having a body and a shackle, means for connecting the shackle to the lever, and means for connecting the body to the arm in position to engage the shackle alinement with the arm, of means carried when the lever is moved into engagement by the lever and the arm for locking the 10 with a notch of the stand. lever out of alinement with the arm and in 7.
