Application filed December 27, 1910. Serial No. 599,285.
I for its object to construct an improved crossfeed attachment for lathes arranged to guide the tool automatically in its movement toward and from the axis of the work. By my attachment bevel-gear blanks may be automatically faced off on their beveled sides at any angle desired, and then reversed and faced off on their straight sides, without disturbing the angular adjustment of the guide or tem let which is employed, and without disturbing the setting of the tool, and this is one of its particular uses, but it may be used for other purposes. The templet, which is employed as the guide extends entirely across the lathe-bed, and its guiding-portion is formed according to the work to be done and is extended substantially throughout its length.

Said plate has a ho e intermediate its length which receives a bushing arranged on the upper projecting end of a bolt h, and is free to swing on said bolt as a center. Said clamp is movable along on the lathe-bed, and is held fixed in any position thereon by the bolt. The top face of the upper clamping-member h" is made fiat, and the guiding-plate or templet has flat faced end-portions on its under side, adapted to engage the top of the upper clampingmember at both ends, to be thus supported by said member. Said plate It is provided with curved slots b at both ends to receive lock ing-bo1ts h, which extend through said slots and into holes in the upper clamping-member and by said bolts said plate is held securely, and being thus secured at both ends is not sensitive to vibrations.
One side or edge of the guide or templet IL is arranged to serve as a guidin -portion to be en aged by the arm 6? on tie crossslide, an as here shown, said side or edge is made straight, for the reason that the bevel-gear blank is designed to be faced oil in a straight line; and the guide or templet is held with said guiding-portion at any angle according to the angle of the face of the bevel-gear blank or other piece to be trued, preparatory to being cut. The point of the tool 6 is guided in parallel with the side or edge thereof as it is moved transversely by the cross-slide in a direction toward and from the axis of the work. The guide or term let may be adjusted to any desired angle y loosening the bolts h, and swinging it on the bolt as a center, the bolt, however, remaining tight so that the clamp is not loosened. Thus the guide or templet bevel-gear blanks by the use of my attachment the,bevel side of a blank may be faced off, then without disturbing the angle of the aide or templet said guide or templet may moved to a remote position by sliding the clam along on the lathe-bed, and. also without isturbing the setting of the tool, the blank may beiremoved andreplaced in a reversed position and the straight side faced off, and then these operations may be repeated on other blanks with the resultrthat all the blanks will be faced off alike.
In a lathe, the combination with a lathecarriage movable longitudinally of the lathebed and having a cross-slide thereon bearing Oopflaa of this patent may be obtained for wardly from the lathe-center, and in position to permit the slide to carry its said arm for a portion of its outward movement with its face out of engagement with the abuttingface of the templet and subsequently'with its face in engagement with said abuttingface, to cause the carriage to be moved longitudinally of the bed during further outward movement of the slide, substantially as described.
