STOVEPIPE OR CHIMNEY THIMBLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 6,
Patented Mar. 3, 19114.
1913. Serial No. 793,761.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, WVILLIAM Pn'rnnsnx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyons, in the county of Clinton and the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe or Chimney Thimbles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the construction of a stove-pipe or chimney thimbl for maintaining a stove-pipc in position; and further, in the construction of such a thimblc as will retain itself in position in a chimney construction without the use of auxiliary fastening means or movable parts.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a face View of my improved thinlblc. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view as taken through the thimble on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail plan section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 illustrates my improved thimble in an operative position, that is, positioned in a chimney opening and having a stove-pipe embodied therewith.
My improved thimble for the end of a pipe length is adapted also to serve as a permanent part of a chimney opening into which the end of said pipe length is to be inserted. For this purpose a wall 5 has a circular chimney opening 6 therein, and the thimble is to be preferably, placed in position when forming the chimney opening and cmbedded into the structure of the chimney.
The thimble is formed of a cylindrical casing 7, open ended, having an outwardly extending face flange 8 which is adapted to abut the face of the wall and limit the in serted position of the thimble. Diametrically oppositely positioned stops 9 extend into the casing opening and anchors 10 extend oppositely, beyond the outer side of said casing, and serve as anchoring means to secure the thimble in position. A face extension 11 reaching above the top of the casing is provided with a web 12 to hold the casing from axial displacement, and a lug extension 13 is provided, forming fasteningreceiving means for supporting the suspend ed end of the stove-pipe.
A stove-pipe length 1-1 has one end inserted in the casing opening with its inserted end abutting the stops 9, and a wire 15 has one end fastened about a portion 16 of the suspended cnd of the stovepipe and has its oppositc end fastened to the lug extension 13, thereby serving to hold the inner end of the stove-pipe fixed in the thimble and also to support the suspended end of the stoveplpe.
'lhe thimble as illustrated and above described, thus provides means to maintain itself from longitudinal and axial displacement, through the flange face 8, rib 12 and anchors 10, provides means through the internal stops 9 for limiting the inserted extent of the stove-pipe, and through its top fastening-receiving means provides, in conjunction with a fastening wire 15, means for maintaining the stove-pipe fixed in the thimble and also for supporting the suspended end thereof,
I. claim as my invention:
An article of the character set forth, comprising, a cylindrical casing formed with a pipe stop, an anchor lug, an outwardly extending face flange, and a longitudinally extending web joining the flange with the outer side of the casing, said flange having a fastening-receiving means located above the casing opening.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM PETERSEN.
