BALING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Application filed August 8, 1913. Serial No. 783,712.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. Uncnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New London, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ealing-Wlachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in billing machines, and has for its object to provide a machine of the character specified. for compressing any desired material, as for instance, cotton, hay or the like, wherein a pressing chamber is provided, and a plunger movable in the pressing chamber, together with means for permitting the plunger to be moved manually.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a front view of the improved baling machine, `Fig. is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The present embodiment of the invention comprises a pressing or baling` chamber l, the opposite faces of the said chamber being open, and doors 2 and 3 are provided, for closing the said openings. The doors are hinged to opposite side walls of the chamber, as indicated at l and respectively, and a plurality of latches (i is provided for lockw ing each of the doors in closed position. The chamber is supported on a suitable base to be presently described, and the side walls of the pressing or baling chamber are provided with longitudinal slots or passages 7, and a plunger' 8 is arranged within the chamber for compressing` the material to be baled. The chamber is arranged in vertical position, and the plunger 8 is normally at the bottom of the chamber. A cross bar 9 is arranged transversely of the plunger on the under face thereof, and the ends of the cross bar extend through the slots or passages 7 before mentioned.
Spaced pairs of standards l() and 10LL are arranged at the sides of the pressing chamber and in spaced relation, the planes of the said pairs of standards being parallel with the side walls of the pressing chamber. The standards are connected at suitable points by means of cross bars 11, and the standards 10 are connected to the pressing chamber by bars l2. Bearing supports 13 are arranged at the bottom of the pairs of standards, and between the same and the baling chamber, and stub shafts 14 are jourlnaled on the bearing supports.
Grooved wheels 15 are secured to the stub shafts, and a grooved wheel 1G is arranged directly above the Wheel 15, adjacent to the standards 10. The said wheel 16 is secured to a stub shaft 17 journaled in bearings 18 on the bars 12, before mentioned.
A. shaft 19 is journaled in bearings 2O and 2l, the bearing 2() being supported by a block 22 on the adjacent face of the pressing chamber and the bearing 21 being supported by one of the cross bars 1l, which connects the standards 10, A second shaft Q3 is jour naled below the shaft 19 in front thereof, the said shaft being supported by bearings 2st on the pressing chamber wall, and bearings 25 on one of the standards 10a. A gear wheel 26 is secured to the outer end of the shaft 19, and ay pinion 27 is secured to the outer end of the shaft- 93, the said pinion meshing with the gear wheel 26. Arci-ank Q8 is also secured to the shaft 23 outside the pinion.
Chains 29 and 80 are connected with the respective ends of the cross bar 9 on the plunger, and the chain 29 passes upwardly over the wheel 16, downwardly under the wheel l5, adjacent to the standards l0, beneath the pressing chamber, and under the wheel 15 adjacent to the standards 10'LL and thence upwardly over the shaft 19 to a connection therewith. The said chain passes over the shaft from the rear toward the front, and is secured to a lug 33, the said lug being secured rigidly to the shaft. The chain 30 passes upwardly from its connection with the cross bar, over the shaft 1S) from the rear toward the front, to a connection with the same lug 33.
The standards 10at are braced against Ithe pressing chamber by metal braces 3st, and the standards l0 are braced against the pressing chamber by inclined metal braces 35, the said braces inclining dmvnward toward the pressing chamber.
The pressing` chamber is connected with the centers of longitudinal bars 3G, and the standards 10 and l0u are supported on the ends of the bars. The bearing supports 1B are also supported by the bars 86 and by the standards l() and 10ft. The pressing chamber is braced at its lower end against the base by means of inclined metal braces 37. A door 38 is also provided for the top of the pressing chamber, the door being hinged at 39 to that side of the chamber adjacent to the shaft 17 and latches a() are provided for holding' the door 38 in closed position.
In operation, the material to be compressed is ted into the pressing chamber with the doors 2 and 3 closed, the said material being ted through the door 3S, After a sufficient amount of material has been inserted, the plunger is operated to compress the said material. The passages or slots 'T engaged by the ends of the cross bar 8 are normally closed by slides stl.. The said slides are arranged at opposite sides ot the chamber, each in the adjacent slot, and the loiver ends ot' the slides are secured to the cross bar as indicated at a'Q.
Shafts 43 are journaled transversely of the slots or passages 7 on the outer faces of the pressing chamber in bearing blocks eht,
and guide Wheels 45 are secured to the ends 4,
therewitll. the door at the top having' reot' the shaft. The said guide Wheels bear against the slides el, to prevent displacement thereof and to lessen friction. The plunger is operated through the crank 2S, and the power may be varied by varying the relative size of the gear Wheel 26 and the pinion 2T.
vWhen the shaft is rotated by means of the crank, the shaft 19 ivill be rotated at a greatly lessened speed but with greatly increased power, and the chains 29 and 8O Will be vfound on the said shaft. As the chains are Wound on the shaft, the plunger will be lifted. and the slides Will move upward With the plunger. The door 38 is notched or recessed as indicated at 46, to permit the passage of the slides when the door is closed.
The Wheels 4:5 bear against reinforcing plates 47 on the slides. The said plates are y secured to the outer faces ot' the slides in i any suitable manner, and the loiver ends of the said plates are connected to the cross bar, the said connection serving to connect the slides to the plunger.
lt Will be noted that the slides al are ot a l length to engage the recesses of the door at the top when the piunger is in lowermost position. At their lovver ends the slides are rigidly7 connected with the plunger and at their' tops engage the ends of the door at the recesses to limit their in 'ard movement. The outward movement ot the slides is prevented by the Wheels I claim l.
