ELWOOD F. MAUL, OF WEST PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELWOOD F. MAUL, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Sash-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to sash fasteners and aims to provide a novel and improved device of that character, applicable to automobile and carriage tops for locking or fastening the sashes thereof in position, although it is to be understood that the present invention is applicable for various purposes.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a unique fastener of the nature indicated, which will consist of but few simple parts, the parts being assembled in a peculiar manner, and the device being durable and inexpensive, as well as simple, efiicient and convenient in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the present invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:.
Figure 1 is a fragmental view of the sash and its frame of a vehicle top, illustrating the improved fastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the fastener, taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is another cross section of the fastener, taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the sash guide of a vehicle top, in which the sash 2 is mounted for sliding movements, although these parts may be taken as typical, inasmuch as the present fasteneris applicable for other purposes as will be apparent.
The improved fastener embodies a bracket 3 adapted to be secured to the sash guide 1 by means of screws or other securing mem bers. The bracket 3 is provided with the parallel ears or projections a and 5, the said Specification of Letters Patent.

ears being relatively long and short, respectively. The relatively long car a is provided with an elongated or rectangular opening 6, while the free portion of the ear 5 is provided with a curved or concaved seat or recess 7.
A circular nut 8 is arranged to fit snugly between the ears 4: and 5 so that its tap alines with the opening 6 and the nut 8 is provided with a reduced extension or neck 9 seatable within the seat or recess 7 and provided exteriorly of the ear 5, with an enlarged knurled head or knob 10.
A screw 11 is arranged to pass through the opening 6 so as to be threadedly received by the nut 8, the sides of the screw 11 being flattened, so as to snugly engage the side edges of the opening 6, to prevent the screw from rotating, but to permit the screw to slide readily as the nut 8 is rotated. Thus, the screw 11 is of rectangular or non-circular cross section, and the mutilated thread thereof is engaged by the tap or internal thread of the nut 8, in order that the rotation of the nut will impart a rectilinear or axial movement to the screw 11. The outer end of the screw 11 is provided with a head 12, to which a cushion or bufier 18 is secured in any well known manner. The cushion 13 is designed to engage the face of the sash 2.
The three parts of the fastener, may be inexpensively manufactured, and may be assembled in a peculiar manner. In assembling the several parts, the nut 8 is first inserted between the ears 4 and 5 of the bracket, so that the reduced portion or neck 9 will seat within the recess or seat 7 of the ear 5, which will bring the tap of the nut into alinement with the opening 6. One end of the screw 11 may then be inserted through the opening 6 so as to be engaged by the nut. The tap of the nut 8 preferably extends through the neck 9 to the head 10 in order that the screw 11 may be of sufficient length to carry out the results desired. It will thus be noted that as the nut is rotated, through the medium of the knurled head 10, the screw may be retracted or projected, a portion of the screw, under all conditions, being housed within the nut 8, unless the screw is detached. The nut thus serves as a housing to receive the screw and to protect the same. By properly rotating the nut, the screw may be projected so as to bring the cushion 13 into engagement with the sash 2, which will bind or look the sash against movement. Conversely, by properly rotating the nut, the screw may be retracted to release the sash.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A sash fastener embodying a bracket having a pair of cars, a non-rotatable screw slidable through one car, a nut disposed snugly between the ears and receiving one end of the screw, and a buffer carried by the other end ofthe screw.
2. A sash fastener embodying a bracket having a pair of ears, one ear having a non- J circular opening, and the other ear having a seat, a screw of non-circular cross section slidable through the said opening, a nut disposed snugly between the said ears and threadeclly receiving one end of the said screw, the nut having a reduced extension received by the said seat, and a buffer carried by the other end of the screw.
3. A sash fastener embodying a bracket having a pair of relatively long and short ears, the long ear having a non-circular opening, and the short ear having a concaved seat, a nut disposed snugly between the said ears and having a neck engaging within the said seat, the neck having a head, a screw of non-circular cross section slidable through the said opening and having one end received by the said nut, and a buffer carried by the other end of the screw.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
