To all whomi't may concern:
Be it known that I, ERIK ARTUR FAoEntornsgriind, Stockholm, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Circuit Breakers and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to such circuit breakers, time switches or similar devices, in which a movable body has a reciprocating motion in a pipe, containing a liquid. In such instruments claimed in my applications Serial Nos. 637,155, filed July 6th, 1911, and 655,790, filed October 20th, 1911, themovable body forms an armature or core, surrounded by a coil, passed by the current to be broken. The upward motion of the core is eilected by a current through the said coil; the downward motion, on the contrary, is effected by gravity, the current through the. coil being on said downward motion broken. The breaking and closing of the current'through the coil is effected by means of a contact device being magnetically operated by the core in its lower end position.
My present invention has for its object to arrange the instrument insuch a way as to be used as an automatically operating time switch or circuit breaker, especially an inthe casing strumentof the kind where lamp circuits are intermittentl closed and opened. This is not practicable with the inventions described in my applications above mentioned.
According to the present invention the contact device is operated by means of a magnetic field set up by a permanent magnet or by a. separate current from an electric source completely separated from the source delivering' the current through the coil.

In order to obtain a quick movement upward but a slow movement downward of the core, this armature is arranged in a tube 0 of glass or metal containing a liquid, for instance oil, petroleum, glycerin or the like. provided with a bore d provided with a valve, said valve opening at the movement upward, but being entirely or partly closed at the movement downward. The rapidity of this movement downward of the core a is governed by the leaking through the interspace between the core and the wall of the tube or through the valve. The armature a is surrounded by an additional coil 1 which is excited by a current from the separate source of electricity 8, said coil f being connected with s by means of the circuits 1 and 1?. The current through the solenoid b is brought up by means of the circuits Z and Z", the former of which is connected with the negative supply circuit wire l. The said ends in a contact device of the following construction: A plate-form armature h arranged in proximity to said tube, and regulated in its throw by screws 2' which are adjustable through it and arranged for contact with said tube or some other fixed part, is located in close proximity to said tube so that itmay be Sulliciently attracted by said core on t e descent of the latter, to draw it over toward said tube as far as allowed by said screws, not withstanding the resistance of spring m which normally holds it back out of action.

'When said armature is drawn toward said core the said contact is brought against a contact screw k adjustable through a fixed bracket corresponding to the adjustment of screws i, so that as the parts h. and 1' move together the contact 1' w l (as best shown in.
The core is further reach the screw is when the screws 2' reach the tube 0. The circuit wire Z is connected with the contact 1' and the circuit wire Z with the adjustable contact k, the latter being connected with the positive circuit wire Z of the solenoid actuating circuit. In the circuit, on the side of the wire Z or Z, the lamps, motors or similar electrical devices are inserted.
The operation is the following: The core a executes its movement downward in the position of the different parts shown on the drawing, said movement being moderated by the liquid in the tube 0. The coil f traversed by the current from the source 8, sets up a magnetic field, which-traverses the core a. When this core has descended in the tube 0, the contact armature h is attracted, the current path i Z -b' r /:Z Z* being thereby closed by the contacts 1 and It. It is obvious that this closing of circuit appears at a position of the core a which is determined by the intensity of the current in the coil f; as however said currentis approximately constant, the armature it will be attracted by a when said core has reached a certain end position. As soon as the said closing of circuit has taken place at which the solenoid b is excited, the core a is directly attracted and quickly brought upward on account of the opening of the valve 6. During the movement upward of the core a the contact 7c is interrupted, so that. the core immediately starts its movement downward, whereupon the course described again takes place.
The embodiment can 'be modified in many ways. It is especially to be observed that the electro-n'iagnetic coil f (Fig. 5) or an equivalent permanent magnet 25, (Fig. 6) may be arranged on the side of the tube 0 suitably opposite to the armature h. It will create a. magnetic field through the lower part of said core in the lowest position of the latter. The coil f may besides be entirely dispensed with, if the contact armature 72- consists of a permanent magnet or is arranged in proximity to such a magnet, t, which may be arranged near the side of pipe 0 at a point opposite to said armature it, as shown in Fig. 6. It is essential only that the core a in its lower end position is passed by a magnetic field set up by a permanent magnej; or by a current from a separate source of electricity.
If it be desired that the upward and downward motion of the core a be equal, the valve 0 may be omitted.
Having now fully described my invention,
its circuit and arranged in noid surrounding the tube and operating,
to protect by Letwhen energized, to draw up the core and a magnet independent of said solenoid and close proximity to the lower part of said core when in its lowest position, an armature attracted by said core when the latter is magnetized by said magnet and a circuit through said solenoid closed by such movement of said armature substantially as set forth.
2. In an electric circuit breaker, in combination, a tube containing a liquid, a core in said tube, a solenoid surrounding the tube and a permanent magnet arranged in close proximity to the lower part of the tube.
3. In an electric circuit breaker, in combination, a tube containing a liquid, a core in said tube, a solenoid surrounding the tube and a permanent, movable magnet arranged in close proximity to the lower part of, the tube. a

In an electric circuit-breaker, in combination, a solenoid, a core descending by gravity through said solenoid, a mechanical device resisting the descent of said core, a magnet arranged to provide a magnetic field through a part of said core as the latter reaches its lowest position, an armature arranged to be attracted by said core when thus magnetized, a contact arranged to close circuit with said armature when the latter is thus attracted, and conductors making circuit through said armature and contact and said solenoid substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with a solenoid and a movable armature and contact closing circuit through said solenoid, a core arranged to descend ,by gravity through said solenoid to a position where its lower end is in proximity to said armature, and a magnet ar ranged in proximity to the lowest position of the lower part of said core for establishing a magnetic field through the same in order that said core may attract said armature, thereby closing the circuit through the solenoid and drawing up the core again.
