WAGON-BODY SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Application filed. October 29, 1912. Serial No. 728,492.
To alt whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARCHIE B. MGRAE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Sanilac, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVagon-Body Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wagons, and particularly to the type of dumping wagons.
The invention is particularly adapted to dumping wagons in which the bottom is made up of a series of longitudinally running boards or strips, which are loosely laid in the wagon and are adapted to. be raised to permit the load to dump directly beneath the wagon. In wagons of this class the load often is heavy enough to cause the strips which form thebottom to sag down in the middle, and it is the principal object of this invention to provide a means for supporting these strips and prevent them sagging.
Another object is to provide a novel means for raising the supporting means into position.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the description and with particular reference to the accompanying drawin 's.
Tn the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wagon body showing my invention applied, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view, Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view immediately in rear of the supporting sill, showing the sill in operative position, Fig. 4 is a similar section showing the strips in in operative position, Fig. 5 is an enlarged side elevation of the lifting device, and Fig. 6 is a front elevation.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents a wagon box having a bottom formed of the removable strips 11.
A strap 12 is disposed vertically at one side of the wagon box, and is provided with a hook 13 for engagement over the upper as clearly shown.
edge of the side of the box, at a point mid way between. the ends of the box. Mounted on the lower end of the strap is a bolt 14: which passes through and supports one end of the auxiliary supporting sill 15. Disposed on the opposite side bar of the wagon body is another hook member 16, the hooked end portion 17 being engaged with the side The lower end of the member 16 is provided with an outwardly and upwardly extending curved portion 18 to which is pivotally connected the forked end 19 of a lever 20, this lever having a handle loop 25 on its opposite end. Disposed through the adjacent end of the sill is a bolt 24, this bolt having pivotally connected to its upper end above the sill, a forked link 22. This link is pivotally connected to the forked portions of the lever 20.
When it is'desired to raise the sill to 0perative position (Fig. 3), the parts being in position as shown in Fig. 4:, the handle 25 ofthe lever 20 is grasped and said lever thrown upwardly sothat it engages against the strap 16. The pivot pin or pins between the arms 23 and 20 are such that when the handle 25 rests against the strap 16, said pivots will lie on the inner side of the pivot 19, these pivots moving from one side to the other of the pivot 19 as the lever 20 is moved up or down. Particular attention is therefore called to the construction, arrangement and operation of the lever 20 and its connected parts, by means of which a great leverage is produced which permits of raising the sill into operative position even with a heavy load on, which had caused the bottom strips to sag;
What is claimed is:
An attachment for a wagon box, comprising a hook member detachably engaged over'the top of one side of the box, a bolt pivotally carried by the hook member, an auxiliary sill having one end adjustably carried by the bolt, a second hook member detachably' engaged over the top of the other side of the wagon box, an outwardly and upwardly extending curved projection on the lower end of the second named hook member, a forked lever pivotally connected to the terminal of said projection, a handle of the pivotal connection of the lever and on the lever, a forked link having its arms projection. 10 stra'ddlin and pivotally connected to the In testimony whereof, I afiix my signaarms of tlie forked lever, and an adjustable ture, in the presence of two witnesses.
V 5 bolt pivotally mounted on the forked link ARCHIE B. MORAE.
I and secured to the other end of the sill, the WVitnesses:
pivotal connection between the lever and GROVER H. BURKE,
link being arranged to swing to both sides KENNETH W. MCRAE.
