, useful Improvements in Well-Drilling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for drilling wells in alluvial deposits and known as rotary machines and has for its object the improvement of machines of this character by reason of which the pipe rotated and the clamp member securing the same may be raised and lowered any desired distance relative to the rotary table.
As is well known in drilling through wax soil, commonly known as gumbo, the dril often becomes stuck and cannot be rotated. By using my improved device, when a stratum of this gumbo is reached, the pipe and drill bit may be raised and then suddenly dropped and this process repeated,
until the stratum is penetrated by the direct stroke of the bit without loosening the rotary grips, The pipe is then rotated and the drilling proceeds in the usual manner. The pipe gripping device is also made vertically movable on the rotary table so that it may be readily passed over the collars uniting the sections of the drill pipe or stem.
My invention also comprehends an improved form of clamp whereby the pipe is secured in the rotary.
With the above and other objects in view my invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction and operation, an example of which is given in this specification and. illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1, is a vertical sectional view of a rotary showing the construction whereby the clamp'member is permitted to be elevated and lowered relative to the rotary I table. Fig. 2, is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3, is a side elevation of the clamp member.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The base of the rotary drilling machine is indicated by the numeral 1, and has the base plate or ring 2, formed with a race way ring 3, in which the anti-friction bearings 4, are located.

The numeral 12, indicates'clamp nuts which are inward-1y I threaded and are secured upon the outwardly threaded sleeves 13, and 14, and may be moved longitudinally thereon by turning. Thesesleeves are r espectively mounted on rods 13 and 14' journaled at each end, in bearing members 15, and 16. These bearing members.are-pro vided. with vertical holes rovided tOTGCBlVe the elongated nuts 17, and 18-, and are also provided with laterally extendin' enlarged holes which receive respectively t e rods 19, and 20. These laterally extending holes are alined with tapped holes in the nuts 17, and 18, designed to engage with outward threads of rods 19, and 20, as shown in Fig- 3, and the rods 19 and 20 thus have aswiveling movement in the bearing members 15 and 16.
The opposing ends of these rods are oppositely threaded, one end having a right and the other a left hand thread and are provided with corresponding nuts 21, and 22, which are integral therewith, so that when said nuts are turned in one direction the bearing members, and rods 13, and 14, carried thereby will be forced apart and when turned in the opposite direction they will be drawn closer together. By reason of the above disclosed construction the clamp memto accommodate itself to any size of pipe required to be used, and may' be readily enlarged when it is desired to pass a pipe coupling therethrough.
The inner wall of the central openlng of the rotary table 5;, is provided with vertically extending grooves 23, Fig. 2, with which correspondingly contoured stays 24, dovetail. These stays are secured to the clamp their lower ends, free and hold said clamp rotary table, but permit a vertical movement thereof independent of said table. These grooves also permit a larger bit to pass through the table than could otherwise pass through the same.
