CASKET-HANDLE.

To all 10710722 it may concern Be it known that T, Enwann R. Sanennrr, citizen of the United States, residing in New Haven, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casket- Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and'exact description.
This invention relates to handles particularly applicable to small sized caskets, al though the improved device is likewlse adapted to other uses where a strong but cheap construction is desired.
The primary object of the present inven tion is to provide an improved construction of handle in which the hanger or bail is moved into assembled position from. the front face of the attaching plate, and wherein the attaching screws, or other members for fastening the plate to the box, likewise serve to support the trunnions of the hanger arms, and to prevent their dislocation relative to the trunnion sockets. Hence, in my improved construction the attaching plate can be made strong enough to minimize the danger of breaking away the socket portions at the respective ends of the latter, in which the hanger arms are fastened, and the connection of the hanger to the plate is secure and effective.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a handle embodying my improvements, showing the hanger in normal depending position, Fig. 2 is a detail face view of the attaching plate, Fig. 3 is a bottom view of Fig. 2, Fig. a is a section. on line 4& of Fig, 1, and Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the attaching plate 10 is usually formed of soft cast metal, and it is provided at its respective ends with pockets or sockets 11 which face rearwardly i. 0. toward the wall of the box or casket. The front walls of the sockets, which project forwardly beyond the front face of the plate 10, are preferably imperforate, and the trunnions 12 of the handle or hanger 13 are introduced into these sockets at the lower front portions thereof, for which purpose the walls of the sockets 11 are cut away at the bottoms, as indicated at 14, and also at specification of Letters Patent.

The trunnions 12 extend laterally from the upper ends of arms 16 which extend upward from the bar portion 17 of the handle or bail 13, and by cutting away the sockets 11 at the bottom and sides, as shown, the hanger may be readily placed in assembled position with respect to the plate 10 by introducing the trunnions 12 into the respective cut away portions ll of the sockets and then moving the arms 16 upwardly into the position shown in Fig. 1. After this has been done a screw 18 is screwed into the casket wall through an opening in the front wall of each socket 11 at a point beneath the respective trunnions. These screws serve to attach the plate 10 firmly to the box, and they are so located as to support the trunnions 12 from beneath as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. In other words, when the hanger 13 is in the normal depending position its weight is sustained by the fastening members 18 extending transversely beneath the trunnions 12, and when the trunnions are so supported it is obviously impossible for them to be displaced. relatively to the sockets 11.
As the construction herein described makes it possible to place the hanger in assembled position from the front face of the attaching plate, the end portions of the attaching plate may be joined at their lower portions with the main body of the plate by connecting portions 19 located back of the respective arms 16. These connecting portions 19 are usually in the form of webs which are of reduced thickness as compared with the main portion of the plate in order to present recesses or seats 20 at the front face of the plate to receive the upper portions of the hanger arms 16. The webs 19 are preferably cast integral with the plate, as will be obvious, and even if they are not very thick, they reinforce the plate very materially so as to minimize the danger of breaking away the terminal portions in which the ends of the hanger arms are socket-ed.
As the screws 18 or their equivalents serve the double function of attaching the plate 10 to the object to be supported and of supporting in a very effective way the ends of the hanger arms, it will be apparent that the construction is a very economical one. The number of parts is reduced to a minimum and at the same time the strength of the device is considerably increased as compared to prior devices of the same general type with which I am familiar.
'While the foregoing description is neces sarily a detailed one in so far as it concerns the particular embodiment of my invention selected for illustration, it will be understood that numerous modifications of the construction may be adopted within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a casket handle, an attaching plate having forwardly projecting sockets closed at the front but having lower cut-away por tions, and cut-away side portions opposing each other, a bail having hanger arms, trunnions extending laterally from said hanger arms toward the respective ends of the device, and extending into said sockets through said side cut-away portions, a sup port at the back of the plate, and fastening screws having heads accessible at the front of the plate, and shanks passing through the front walls of the respective sockets into said support, and supporting said trunnions in said sockets; substantially as described.
2. In a casket handle, an attaching plate having a main body portion and socketed end portions, each end portion having a forwardly projecting socket cut away at the side and at the bottom, the side cutaway portions of said sockets facing each other, a bail having hanger arms extending alongside the side cut-away portions of said sockets, and supported in said sockets, and webs of reduced thickness located beneath the hanger arms and integrally connecting the main body portion with the respective end portions of the attaching plate; substantially as described.
3. In a casket handle, an attaching plate having a main body portion, and socketed end portions, said end portions being provided with forwardly projecting sockets cut away at the side and bottom, a bail having hanger arms extending alongside the cut-away portions of said sockets, trunnions on said hanger arms extending into sait sockets, a support at the back of said plate, fastening screws having heads accessible at the front of the plate, and shanks passing through the front walls of the respective sockets into said support, and confining said trunnions in said sockets, and webs located back of the hanger arms and connecting the main body portion of the plate integrally with the end portions; substantially as de scribed.
