MACHINE FOR HANDLING WIRE-NETTING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Handling lVire-Netting, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in machines for handling poultry netting and more particularly to a machine for holding reels of wire netting and a means for measuring the same as it is removed therefrom, and my object is to provide a device of this character which will save time and labor in the handling of the netting and which will, at the same time, re quire less space than is now necessary for the proper handling of such material.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a machine which has means thereon for compactly rolling the material as the same is drawn from the reels or bolts on the machine, thereby permit-ting the material to be carried by the purchaser and eliminating the necessity of delivering the same.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a machine of this character which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing my improved device filled with numerous reels of poultry netting and disclosing the manner of removing the 'material. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the open bearings used on the main reel; and Fig. 4 is a similar view of one of the closed bearings used on the oppo site end of the main reel.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which I indicates the main supporting frame havlng the end standards 2 extending a considerable distance above the bed or table portion 3 of the frame and mounted on the upper ends of these end standards 2 are the bearings 4. Rotat-ably mounted in the bearings 4 is an enlarged reel consisting of the disk-like head members 5 and a central shaft 6. These head members 5 are braced by means of brackets or the like 7 to said shaft 6, the latter being rotatably mounted in the bearings 4.
The one head member 5 has secured to the inner face thereof a plurality of open bearings 8, each of which has pivotally secured to one side thereof a retaining plate or the like 9 which is adapted to extend over the open portion thereof and clamp to the opposed side by means of a set screw or other similar securing means 9. The inner face of the opposite head 5 of the reel has secured thereto a similar number of complete bearings 10 of the usual or any preferred type,- arranged thereon in similar position to the bearings 8 and rotatably mounted in these bearings 8 and 10, are the shafts 11, upon which are mounted the bolts or rolls of poultry netting 12. These shafts 11 are bolts of net-ting may be carried on each shaft, each roll or bolt being spaced from theother by means of the spacing disks 13. These spacing disks are adjustably and removably secured to the respective shafts 11 and retain the edges of the roll or bolt of netting even throughout the movement of the main reel and also while the material is being removed therefrom. It will bea'p'preciated that in view of the open'bearings 8, on the one head -5 of the reel, the rolls may be readily removed from the shafts and other rolls of netting applied thereto, when desired.
The head 5 opposed to that having the open bearings therein, has the outer face thereof, adjacent the peripheral edge provided with ratchet teeth 14 and a pivoted be readily removed therefrom. In order to prevent the reel from being over-balanced, by the weight of rolls on any one portion thereof, I have provided a brake-shoe 16 carried 011 an arm 17 which is fulcrumed on the inner face of the last mentioned end standard 2, said brake-shoe being adapted to be drawn intoengagement with the periph eral edge of the adjacent head 5 of the reel. The arm 17 extends in advance of the end standard 2 and has hooked into engagement therewith a rod 16 which depends through a slot in the table of the device and the free end of this rod is pivo-tally engaged with a crank arm 16 which is carried on one end of a horizontal shaft 16. This horizontal shaft is mounted to oscillate in the bottom of the frame 1, and formed thereon, adjacent the end opposite that having the crank arm 16 thereon, is an additional and forwardly extending arm 17. The free end of this arm has a foot pedal 17 formed thereon, while a coil spring 17 has one end thereof engaged with the arm 17 and the upper end engaged with the side of the frame 1, thereby normally tending to draw said arm 17 upwardly and correspondingly removing the brake-shoe from engagement with the periphery of the head 5. In order to retain the arm 17 in its lowermost position so that the brake-shoe will be retained in engagement with the one head 5 of the reel, a swinging holder 18 is provided on the one side of the frame 1 which is triangular in design and adapted for engagement with said arm 17 as the latter is forced downwardly. The arm 17 will be retained under the lower arm of the holder 18 and thereby retain the former in the required position, but if desired, a ratchet or the like may be provided for this purose.
p The head member 5 which carries the open bearings 8 is also provided on its peripheral edge with a plurality of radially extending handle grips or the like 19, whereby the main reel may be readily revolved on its axis.
Rotatably mounted between the end standards 2 below the reel above referred to, is a tension roller 21, around which the netting is adapted to be disposed as the same isbeing removed from the respective rolls or bolts. Also rotatably mounted in bearings 22, at the ends of the frame 1, and disposed immediately adjacent the front and rear edges of the table or bed 3, are the additional rollers 23 over which the netting is also adapted to be passed, as the same is being removed.
I have provided a means for unrollin'g the material from the respective bolts or rolls on the main reel, and at the same time compactly rolling the same so as to be readily carried around by the purchaser. To this end, I provide a bar 24 to the ends of which are secured stub shafts 2 1', the latter being rotatably mounted in the ends of the main frame in a plane slightly below the plane of the'bed or table 3. Clamped one above the other, in an approved manner, through the medium of the clamping members 25, are the clamping bars 26 and 27, and carried on the outer end of the one end stub shaft 24, is a crank or handle member 26, whereby the bars and parts carried thereby may be rotated on the frame.
The end of a roll of wire netting is adapted to be disposed between the clamping bars 2 1 and 26, so that the turning of said clamping bars in the frame 1, will roll the material on the bars 24; and 27 and at the same time remove said material from the bolt or roll in the main reel. The one stub shaft having the crank or handle 26' thereon is also provided with a ratchet 27, while a pawl 28 which is pivotally carried on the end of the main frame 1, is adapted to engage the teeth thereof to retain the rotatable bar and its adjunctive parts in any adjusted position and at the same time prevent the unwinding of the same. It will be understood from the above that this bar 24; and parts carried thereby forms an unreeling device and when it is desired to remove wire netting from a particular roll, the reel is disposed to a position so that the desired roll or bolt of netting is disposed in position just above the tension roller 21. The end flap of the desired roll is then drawn beneath said tension roll and over the bed 3, to be clamped between the clamping bars 24 and 26 of the unreeling device. When this is done, the bar 24, with the parts thereon, is rotated in the proper direction and the material will be wound upon this unreeling device in a compact form, in view of the particular construction of said unreeling device and the tension roller 21.
I have provided a means for measuring the material, as the same is drawn from the rolls or bolts and to this end, a bar or rod 29 is mounted between the end standards, immediately adjacent to and forward of the tension roller 21. Adjustably mounted on this bar or rod 29, is a measuring and registering device 30 which, generally speaking, consists of a pair of rotatable cylinders cooperating one with the other and dials with recording hands which cooperate therewith and with said cylinders. One of the cylinders is, of course, adapted to contact with the wire netting as the same is drawn over the table or bed 3, the measuring device being capable of adjustment 'so as to permit this cylinder to be retained in position throughout the operation of the device. This measuring device being adjustable on the rod 29, is capable of movement so as to cooperate with the rolls or bolts of netting in any position on the machine and as said the operator, ascan be readily seen ff'om Fig.
1 of the drawings,
In the drawings Ihave shown and in the specification I have described the device as.
being entirely disposed in ahorizontal plane but, if desired, the main reel may be arranged on a vertical axis and each shaft carried therein for supporting the bolts capable of adjustment to a substantially horizontal position. out this structure will, however, be entirely within the scope of the appended claims.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a'simple, inexpensive and efli cient means for carrying'out the objects of the invention and while'I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or, sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is v 1. 'a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, and a rotating member mounted therein; of an arm fulcrumed on said frame and provided with a brake shoe at one end thereof adapted for engagement with said rotating member, a longitudinal shaft mounted to oscillate in the lower portion of said frame, an arm car ried on said shaft, connecting means between the last mentioned arm and the one end of The changes necessary to carry said first mentioned arm, a pedal member carried on said oscillating shaft, spring means in connection with said pedal and the frame to normally retain said brake shoe out of engagement with the rotating member, and means carried on the frame adapted for engagement with the pedal member 'to retain the latter in its effective position and correspondingly dispose the brake shoe in engagement with said rotating member,
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame", andv a rotating member thereon;. of an arm fulcrumed on said frame and having a brake shoe atone end thereof adapted for engagement with said rotating member, a longitudinal shaft mounted to oscillate in the lower portioncof said frame, connecting means between said shaft and said fulcrum arm to operate the latter upon the oscillation of the shaft, an additional ar'm carried on said shaft and having a pedal member at one end thereof, spring means in connection with said frame to normally draw said pedal member in one direction and correspondingly dispose the brake shoe to its ineffective position, and a swinging member carried on the frame adapted to be disposed in engagement with said pedal to retain the latter in its effective position and correspondingly dispose the brake shoe in engagement with the rotating member.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H KING.
