TWISTER.
Patented Feb. 10, 1914. Serial No. 782,774.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALoNzo E. Rrroaons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, county of \Vorcester, State of.
cially connected with so-called twisters,
and it has for its object the provision of a simple and accessible means for disconnecting and connecting the driving mechan sm for the builder cam, shaft, and controlling the rotation of the said shaft when the driving mechanism is disconnected therefrom.
The nature of the invention and its object will appear more clearly from the accompanying specification and drawings and will be particularly defined in the appended claims.
The drawings show a'well-known type of twister with a preferred form of the invention applied thereto.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a twister embodying the present invention taken at the end at which the power is transmitted from the cylinder to other parts and showing the builder motion partly broken out to save space. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the frame showing so much of the machine as is necessary to the disclosure of the invention.
The general construction and operation of a twister such as that in which the present invention is herein shown as applied, may be understood by reference to the patent to Rhoades, No. 989,050, granted April 11, 1911; it will therefore be unnecessary here to describe in detail the construction and operation of the machine except in so far as it is immediately concerned with the present invention. A twister of this type comprises a box-like frame A, in which the gearing is protected and inclosed, the side rails B, but one of which is shown herein, and in which the twisting spindles C are rotatably mount-- ed, a vertically reciprocating ring rail D provided with suitable rings E, the top bar H for supporting the front dellvery rails, top rails, transverse rods and guide eyes for the yarn which are familiar and which it is unnecessary to illustrate. Each spindle has the usual attached wheel L driven by a flat or tape driving band M. v
The spindle driving drum or cylinder N extends lengthwise of the frame as usual, and is driven in the usual manner and drives in turn the spindles through the bands M as described in the aforesaid Patent No. 989,050. The mechanism for actuating the builder motion from the cylinder is the same as that shown in the aforesaid patent to Rhoades, No. 989,050 including the short shaft 42 which serves as a support for the hub e3 formed on the open head of the linked sleeve bearing 44. This sleeve hearing rotatably supports the transmitting shaft 45 having on one end a worm 46 and at its other end a bevel gear 4E7 within the open head of the bearing and driven by a like gear 48 fast on the shaft 42. The worm 46 is adapted to engage and drive the worm gear 49 fast on the shaft 50 which is the builder cam shaft supported in the end A and also by'a bracket 51 secured to the rail B. The builder or traverse actuating cam 52 and a brake wheel which may be and is herein shown as a hand wheel 53 is also fixedly secured to the shaft 50. The cam 52 serves to actuate the builder motion in the usual manner and is shown as heart shaped.
In the operation of the apparatus when winding back after a frame has been dofi'ed, the driving mechanism for the builder cam shaft is disengaged therefrom and, in the form of the device illustrated, this is secured by disengaging the worm 46 from the worm gear 49. This driving mechanism, or in this casethe worm &6, must therefore be locked in operative engagement during the spinning or twisting action. When the driving mechanism, as the worm 46, is disengaged, it has been common for the operative to grasp the hand wheel 53 and let it rotate slowly to prevent the ring rail from dropping too suddenly, for otherwise the weight of the rail and other parts acting upon the builder cam 52 to turn it around rapidly and the sudden drop of the rail might cause dam age. Furthermore, ready access to thishand wheel and to the support for the worm or driving mechanism is difficult because of the location ofthese parts at the bottom of the frame where the mechanism is somewhat crowded together and close to the floor.
This invention provides a simple and effieient form of manually operated mechanism whereby the worm or other driving mechanism may be easily and readily disconnected and reconnected to the worm gear 40 or the shaft and whereby also the reverse rotation of the shaft 50 may readily be controlled. To this end the invention provides a device such as a lever located at the upper part of the frame in a position where it may be readily grasped and operated and also a braking mechanism for the brake wheel or hand wheel 49 which is sin'iultaneously thrown into action upon the disconnecting of the driving mechanism.
In the construction illustrated the sleeve bearing 44 is provided with a forward eX- tension 54 which is shown as having at its forward end a loop handle 55. This loop handle may be convenient for use at times although it is not necessary to the operation of the device provided with the present invention. This extension is shown as provided with a bracket 100 and a link 101 shown as a rod which passes through an aperture in the bracket 100 and is provided with a pair of check nuts 102 threaded thereon both above and below the apertured portion of the bracket 100 so that the link or rod 101 is longitudinally adjustable with respect to the bracket, yet may rock or swing slightly with respect thereto. A hand lever 103 is pivoted at 104 to the frame member A above the extension 54 and at a point where it may be readily grasped and operated by the operative without interfering with the mechanism of the apparatus. The link 101 is pivoted at its upper end at 105 above the pivot 104 to the hand lever at 103. The stop 106 formed on the hand lever below the pivot 104 abuts against the link 101 and is so arranged that when it abuts against the link 101 the hand lever is in horizontal position with the worm 46 in engagement with the worm gear 49 and the pivotal connection 45 above the pivot 104.
A movable brake shoe support adapted to move or swing a brake shoe into contact with the brake or hand wheel 53 is provided and is herein shown as a lever 107 pivoted to the side frame A zit-108 and provided at one end with a brake shoe 109. This brake shoe is surfaced with leather or other friction material. At its opposite end the lever 10? is adjustably connected either with the link 101 or the sleeve bearing 44 through its eX tension 54. In the form illustrated this adjustable connection is secured by extending the link 101 downwardly through the aperture in the end of the lever 107 and providing a pair of check nuts 110 on the threaded portion of the link 101 above the lever 10?.
The operation of the mechanism will now be apparent. lVith the parts in position as shown in the drawings, the adjustment of the check nuts 102 and 110 is such that the worm 46 is held locked in engagement with the worm gear 49, the brake shoe 109 is then not in contact with the brake wheel 53, and the handle 103 is at its horizontal position, held there with its stop 106 against the link 101. The spinning or twisting operation proceeds in the usual manner. When the dofling operation takes place the handle 103 is swung upwardly and the pivotal connec-.
tion 105 of the link 101 to the handle 103 is thus lowered, forcing the link 101 downwardly and thus forcing downwardly the extension 54 of the sleeve bearing 44 and disconnecting the worm 46 from the worm gear 49. At the same time the link 101 rocks the lever 107 to throw the brake shoe 109 into contact with the periphery of the brake wheel. thus preventing the reverse rotation of the shaft 50. Sufficient play is allowed between the brake shoe and the wheel so that by manipulating the lever 103 the brake wheel 53 may be allowed to rotate and its rotation be controlled without bringing the worm 40 into contact with the worm gear 49, the lever 10? being adjusted with respect to the extension 54 by means of the check nuts 110 for this purpose. To reconnect the driving mechanism, as the worm 47 with the worm gear 40, the handle 103 is simply thrown back into the position illustrated in the drawings thus releasing the brake and reconnecting the worm and the worm gear.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
