WILLIAM J. NORRIS, OF REYNOLDSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
ENVELOP-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1914.
Application filed March 2, 1912. Serial No. 683,326.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. Nonnis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reynoldsville, in the county of J eiferson and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelop- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to envelop fasteners and particularly to safety envelops.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and ellicient envelop used in connection with a novel type of fastener which prevents access to the envelop without destroying or mutilating the envelop.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel, simple and efficient fastener which may be cheaply constructed and which may be either arranged so as to fasten the envelop permanently or so that the envelop may be readily opened and refastencd when necessary.
Further objects of this invention will ap pear as the following specific description is read in. connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which Figure l is an elevation of an envelop used for second class mail matter showing the flap element of the fastener ready for insertion in its coacting element on the body of the envelop. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken longitudinally through the fastenor elements on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referrin to the drawings, 1 represents an ordinary shipping envelop best adapted to carrying second class matter and the like and is provided with the usual closing flap 2. Secured to the body of the envelop by means of the prongs 3 which are struck up therefrom is a plate d having a tongue engaging loop 5 punched up from its body a suficient distance to permit the passage of a locking extension 6 which is carried by a plate 7 secured to the flap 2 by the prongs 8 which are also punched up from its body. This extension 6 is provided with an upwardly bent spring tongue 9 adapted to enagainst the loop 5 so as to lock the extension within the loop, as shown in Fig. 2. The rear end of the flap plate 7 is provided with a rolled extension 10 which can be conveniently engaged by the finger for withdrawing the extension 6 from the loop when the tongue has been depressed out of engagement with the loop 5. Preferably..
the locking prongs extend through the body of the envelop and flap and also through reinforcing disks 11 secured to the inside of the body and the inside of the flap. This prevents the fasteners from tearing out when any strain is placed thereon.
\Vhat is claimed is In an envelop fastener, the combination with a plate for connection with the body of the envelop, of a second. plate for connection with the sealing flap of the envelop, a loop carried by the first plate, an extension on the second plate and adapted to pass through the said loop, and a spring-like locking tongue struck from the outer end of the said extension and projecting longitu' dinally toward the inner end thereof, with the tongue inclined from the point of its formation and lying out of the plane of the extension so that its free end will abut against an edge of the loop after the said extension has been passed therethrough, the said tongue being struck from the central portion of the outer end of the said extension.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. NORRIS.
