I ISAAC RHEINSTROM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CONVERTIBLE CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 20, 1912.
Patented Feb. 10, 1914. Serial No. 721,477.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC RrrmNsrRoM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Manhattan, city of New York, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Convertible Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to convertible furniture. It more particularly relates to convertible chairs and beds.
The object of my invention is to produce a Morris chair that may be converted into a bed. The chair may be used during the day as an ordinary Morris chair and at night the back and one of the sides may be altered and made into a bed.
The invention may be contained in many forms of furniture and the details may be modified and yet such structure will still contain my invention.
1 have shown in the drawings and will hereinafter describe one form of structure containing my invention to show how such structures may be made and to show that structures embodying my invention are operative.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the chair. Fig. 2 is a side View. Fig. 3 illustrates the bed when the chair shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is opened. Fig. 1 illustrates the method of unfolding the chair. Fig. 5 shows a rear view of the back of the Morris chair when it is open. Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate details of the convertible chair.
1, Fig. 1, is the chair. It is provided with a fixed side 2 and a removable side 8. It also has a back 4 which extends the full height of the chair. The seat 5 and the back 1 are provided with springs and are up holstered in the manner well known in the art.
The back 4 is divided into two parts 6 and 7 which are hinged together by the hinges 8. The back is secured to the arms 9 of the chair by means of hooks 10 which drop into sockets or staples 11 located on the rear half 7 of the back of the chair. The back 4: is set in between the arms 9 of the chair. The lower end of the back 4 is secured to links 12 which are attached to the front legs 13 as shown in Fig. 1. The links are located on the outside of the legs of the chair and between the legs and the sides 2 and 3. They have free movement above the stop 14;,
The removable side 3 is secured by means of extending lugs or fiat hooks 15 which hook into staples or straps 16 located on the seat of the chair. The side is also provided with a lock 17 which extends inward from the side so as to engage a strip 18 which is secured to the seat of the chair. This will prevent the removal or separation of the arm from the chair body when the arm is lifted. The lock 17 may be opened by pulling out the lever 18 which draws the spring 17 inward and releases the arm from the seat of the chair. The upper end, that is, the weight arm of the lever is made cam shape so that the spring of lock 17 will hold the lever in an opened position. The arm may then be removed and again secured to the seat of the chair by inserting the lugs or fiat hooks 19 which extend over the lower edge of the side into the straps 16 located on the side of the seat. The side 3 is also provided with a bent rod 20 which extends along the frame work 21 of the side and along and underneath the arm of the chair. The rod 20 lies close to the body of the side wall of the chair and is hinged to the arm proper by the straps 22. When the side 3 is removed and tilted over so as to insert the lugs 19 into the sockets 16, the rod 20 will drop down and form supporting legs for the side 3. This is when the chair has been opened and is to be used as a bed.
The backtmay be opened as shown in Fig. 5. The legs 23 are inclosed in the back. They are pivoted upon pivot pins 24 which extend through the legs and the braces 25. The legs are also attached to the back by means of folding links 26 which allow the legs to be swung outward a little over 90 from the back. They are adapted to hold the legs in position against any lateral pressure that may be applied to the back. Legs, 29 are also secured to the top of the back. They are hinged to the back by the straps 27 so that when the back is let down the legs 29 will fall into position.
When the legs 28 are placed in position to support the bed the back is then dropped down and the link 11 which is attached to the lower edge will cause the back to swin into position. The back will roll forward on the rollers 28 of the legs 23 as shown in Fig. 1 and locate itself in juxtaposition to the seat and the side of the chair when the side has been placed in position. At the same time the legs 26 will fall into position and the chair will be open and ready for use as a bed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
A convertible chair bed, comprising a chair seat and legs, a side member adjustably attached to one side of the seat and extending below the seat, devices for holding said member to the seat when in position as a chair, means adapted to support the lower edge of said side member on the adjacent side of the seat when said adjustable side member is raised and adjusted to horizontal position; and means connected with said member adapted to support said side member when in horizontal position;
with a back comprising front and rear frames hinged together at one side, devices adjustably connecting one of said frames to the chair seat, and means adapted to support the back frames when adjusted to horizontal position; the said chair seat, adjustable side member, and two back frames together forming a double bed when extended, and a Morris chair when folded, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
