RACEWAY FOR STITCH-FORMING RECIPBOCATING ELEMENTS.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, Josnrn M. ll lnnnow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Racei-vays for Stitch- Forming Reciprocating Elements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the characters of reference on the said drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of raceways for the reciprocatin g elements of high speed mechanisms.
One object of my invention is to provide a raceway so constructed that the amount of wear resulting from high speed and continued use will be reduced.
Another object is to provide a simple and convenient construction whereby the respective parts of a number of raceways may be readily interchangeable.
Another object is to'so construct a raceway that the relative alinement of the bear ing surfaces thereof is easily assured, and a still further object is to incorporate all these features in a raceway having a reversible base plate, that may be readily applied to the frame caps of machines of the general types disclosed in United States Patents Nos. d41,315 and 591,0 l9.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain novel and useful features and details of construction as hereinafter more fully described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an isometric view of an embodiment of my invention shown as applied to the frame cap of an overseaming machine of the well lrnown Merrow type. The device is shown assembled and one of the gibs has been partly broken away to more clearly disclose the base of the raceway. Fig. 2 is an isometric view of the portion of the frame cap to which my invention is applied, showing the various parts detached but approximately in their correct relative positions, the dot and dash lines indicating how each part is placed when assembled.
Referring to the embodiment shown in the drawings, the letter F denotes the frame Specification of Letters Patent.

cap having the dove-tail raceway secured thereto, the said raceway consisting in the main of the base plate B and the gibs G and G all preferably being made of suitable wear resisting material and being secured to a plain surface F on the frame cap by the screws 9 and g g.
In the surface F of a frame cap is often found a recess 30 having an extension 30 and at a suitable distance above this recess and suitably disposed with respect to the face F is the spline S. The aperture B in size and form approximately corresponds to the recess 30 and it is suitably located in the plate B to register with the said recess. The extended portion B of this aperture, however, unlike the extension 80 which is oil the center of the aperture 30 is centrally alined with the aperture 13 of which it is an extension, and instead of corre spending in form with the extension 30 it is enough wider to clear the recess 30 when the plate B is reversed, as will be hereinafter explained. Arranged on the op posite faces and B of the plate 13 and on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of the aperture B are the splines S and S, parallel to the said axis and parallel to each other. The splines S and S are each set the same lateral distance from the longitudinal axis of the aperture 13' as the spline S is distant from the longitudinal axis of the recess 30.
In the under side G of the gib G is the spline S preferably arranged in parallet ism with the intersection of the surfaces G G". The holes for the screws that pass through the splines and that secure the gibs G and G in place are arranged to permit the reversal of the base plate. The two holes 6 b register with similar holes f in the frame cap and usually, they are arranged on the longitudinal axis of the aperture B. Through these holes pass two screws for securing to the frame cap a piece not shown. In assembling this raceway, the keys 7c and it, which should fit the width of the splines accurately but which should be somewhat shallower than the combined depths of the two alined splines, are inserted in the alined splines as S S and S S and between the respective'holes f f and Z) Z), as shown in Fig. 2, and when the raceway is assembled as shown in Fig. 1, the whole is securely held together by the screws 9 g and g g, the base plate B being clamped between the faces G and G, of the gibs G and G, and the face F of the frame cap. The gib G is accurately positioned by the keys and splines, and the gib G which is adjustable to compensate for wear as set forth in Patent #dalfifi, is located in alinement with the gib G by a suitable adjusting wedge lV wiich is secured to the frame can by the screw w.
The faces B and B are parallel with each other and correspond respectively, and when the plate B is reversed by turning it side for side on the longitudinal axis of the aperture B, the face B may be substituted for the face 13* or vice versa. lhus if one face, for example the face B should become worn, it is only necessary to remove the screws 9 g and g when the plate B may be turned with its worn face to the face 1 the splines S and S exchanging places and substituting one another, while the face B presents a new wearing surface in place of the surface B The raceway herein described and shown is self contained and its gibs G and G are mounted and bear wholly on an integral piece or plate that forms the bottom of the raceway, the whole constituting a structure that may readily be made with accuracy and uniformity and that may be applied to any suitable support.
It is obvious that where the construction of the support does not demand it, the aperture B B and holes 6 b may be omitted, and while I have described in detail the specific form and embodiment of my invention as shown in the drawings, 1 do not limit myself thereto, but- What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In combination in a raceway including a pair of gibs, a support therefor and a base plate wholly interposed between the said gibs and the support; the base plate, the support and one of the gibs having means thereon for accurately alining the three, and means for securing the gibs and the base plate to the support.
2. In combination in a raceway and with the support thereof, a base plate reversible face for face, a gib relatively fixed thereon, a second gib laterally adjustablewith respect to the fixed gib, means for positioning and holding the gibs in alinement, and means for securing the gibs and base plate to the support.
3. In combination in a raceway, and with a support therefor, a pair of gibs, a base plate for the raceway and for the gibs, corresponding splines in the support, in the base plate and in one of the gibs, keys for the said splines whereby the support, the base plate and the gib are held in the desired relative positions, and means for se curing the raceway to the support.

In combination in a raceway mounted on a support, a spline in the support, a pair of gibs, one of which has a longitudinal spline therein, a reversible base plate having a spline in each of its opposite faces, an aperture in the said base plate, the said aperture being suitably formed to clear a recess in the support, means for holding the splines in alinement, and means for securing the raceway to the support.
5. A raceway including in combination, a pair of gibs, a reversible base plate, a support for the raceway, means for eflecting the alinement of the gibs, wear compensat ing means, and means for sec ring the raceway to the support.
6. In combination in a raceway, a base plate reversible face for face, a gib relatively fixed thereon, a second gib laterally adjustable with respect to the fixed gib and means for securing the gibs to the base plate.
7. In combination in a raceway, a base plate reversible face for face, a gib relatively fixed thereon, a second giblaterally adjustable with respect to the fixed gib, means for positioning and holding the gibs in alinement and means for securing the gibs to the base plate.
8. In combination in a raceway, a base plate reversible face for face, a spline in each face thereof, a pair of gibs mounted on the said base plate, a spline in one of the gibs, a key cooperating with the splined gib in one of the splines in the base plate, means for adjustably positioning the other gib in alinement with the splined gib, and means for securing the gibs to the base plate.
