i LEATHER SKIVING MACHINE. v
(Application led Dec. 5, 1899.) (No Model.)

Tia/enton- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. BAYLEY, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LEATHR-SKIVING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,349, `dated May 22, 1900. Application filed December 5,1899. Serial No. 739,291. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES I-I. BAYLEY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather-Skiving Machines, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains or with which it is most nearly connected to make and use the same.
This invention relates to leather-skiving machines of the type shown in Patent No.` 636,942, granted to me November 14, 1899; and the prime object in the present instance is to provide for longitudinally adjusting the feed-roll in bringing about the proper relation between the knife andthe eflicient surface of the feed-roll.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, the essential elements of which are recited in the appended claims and a preferred form of embodiment of which is specifically described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Of the drawings, Figure l represents a portion of a leather-skiving machine, for the most part in front elevation, with the present invention embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on line 2 2 of Fig. l.
In the drawings the reference-letter a designates a horizontal arm of the supportingframework of the machine, on which is mounted the bearing b for the shaft c, carrying the feed-roll c below the knife d and vfeed-disk e.
It is essential to the performance of perfect work that the center or anis of rotation of the knife should be substantially on the median line of the scarf, and as'scarfs vary in width on various kinds of work and this' varying width is usually attained through the medium of the guides and guide-fingers it is necessary, among other things, to regulate the parts so as to bring the center of the knife to proper position, as has hereinbefore been indicated. This has heretofore been commonly done by adjusting the knife or knifecarrier. There are reasons, however, under some circumstances when it is desirable to leave the position of the knife undisturbed and to adjust the feed-roll to suit it to the position ofthe knife-as, for example, when the latter is driven by gears which would require readj ustment--and this is the particular purpose of the present invention.
In carrying out my presentimprovements I adjust the feed-roll and guides cordinat'ely longitudinally of the rollshaft. For this purpose and in the employment of the means shown in the drawings the feed -roll c is splined toits shaft by means of a groove c in the latter and a key 0n the roll, and the hub 'of the roll is elongated in reduced diameter, as shown at c2, for the accommodation of ashifting ring f,which loosely embraces it and is confined by a collar f', secured to the hub. The ring f is formed on the end of an arm f2, springing from a bracket or block f3, which is mounted upon a lateral and downward extension b of the bearing l), the bracket having a longitudinal slot f4, engaged by a screw g, tapped into the shaft-bearing 'extension b. It will be seen that the longitudinal position of the roll with relation to the knife can be regulated by adjusting the bracket or block f3. The latter has an upwardly-extending portion f5 for supporting the guide-holding bracket h, which is vertically slotted, as at g', to accommodate a screw ,'tapped into said extension of the block f3. The usual guide j and spring j are mounted on the said bracket h, and it will be seen that the relation of these parts to the roll is not changed by longitudinal adjustment of the latter. The adjustment of the guide j determins what portion of the milled surface of the feed-roll will act on the leather, and as it is important, as stated, that the center of the knife be substantially in a median line of the acting or efficient portion of the feed-roll, whatever that .may be, the adjustment of the feed-roll and guides in the manner described effectuates the requirement in a very convenient and efficient manner.
Believing that I am the first to adjust the feed-roll laterally with respect to the knife to accomplish the purpose specified and having employed various forms of means for attaining these ends, I do not confine my invention to the precise form and arrangement of de- IOO vices herein shown, since these may be m'e-'j lateral relation of the feeding-surface of said chanically varied Without departing from the nature or spirit of the improvements.
Having thus explained the naturer of the invention and described a Way of constructing and lusing the same, though Without attempting to set forth all of the forms in Which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, it is declared that what is claimed is--- l. In a machine of the character described, the combination with the knife, of a feed-roll capable of bodily longitudinal adjustmentn transversely of the knife-axis; and adjusting means determining the lateral relation of the feeding-surface of said roll to the knife, substantially as and for the purpose described.
l 2.V Ina machine of the character described, the combination With the knife; of a feed-roll and its shaft having provisions for longitudinal movement of the roll; and an adjusting block or bracket engaging the roll and determiningthe lateral relation of the feeding-surface of saidfroll to the knife, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination with the knife; of a feed-roll and shaft splined together ;A and an adjusting block or bracket mounted on the shaft-support, engaging the roll and determining the roll to the knife, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a machine ofthe cb aracter described, the combination with the knife, of a shaft and A support or bearing therefor, a feed-roll splined on said shaft and having an elongated hub, a longitudinallyadjustable bracket mounted on the shaft-support and having a ring embracing the hub of the roll, and a collar screwed to the latter and con ning .the ring, substantially as described.
5. In a machine of the character described, the combination with the knife, of a shaft and support or bearing therefor, a feed-roll splined 'on said shaft, a longitudinally#adjustable bracket mounted on Athe shaft-support and engaging the roll, and a guide-bracket adjustably mounted on said roll-controlling bracket, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 24th day of November, A. D. 1899. i
CHARLES Il. HAYLEY.
