Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GRACE HALL, of New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Articles of Furniture, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

The object of my invention is to provide an article of furniture, which, while serving primarily as a bookcase and cabinet can also be used as a screen or partition; and to such ends my invention consists in the article of furniture hereinafter specified.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front of an article of furniture embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

in many situations, such, for instance, as artists studios, it is desirable to screen off a part of a room (such as a washstand or a corner in which cooking is done), and it is one of the objects of my invention to provide an article of furniture which would serve this purpose, and which on the side exposed to the room would look like a bookcase, and thus be of attractive appearance, while the side exposed toward the cornor could be used as a cabinet, for instance, for dishes and cooking utensils.

Another object of my invention is to provide such an article of furniture, which on the front side, would have the appearance of a partition wall having book shelves built into it, while on the rear side it would serve as a cabinet as before stated.

In the drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention, but it is to be understood that the illustrated form is only typical of many possible embodiments. My invention, therefore, is not to be limited to the particular construction shown.

The illustrated form of my invention comprises a rectangular frame having sides 1 and 2, and a top and bottom 3 and 4:. Shelves 5 and 6 are built into the front of the frame, and the front opening is closed by an upper board 7 and a lower board 8. The shelves are closed at the back by a boarding 9. 10 and 11, which may be ad justably supported by a series of cleats 12 for that purpose. At the front edges of the frame leaves 13 are hinged. From the front the appearance is presented of a partition wall having book shelves built into it, as is frequently done in the permanent construction of a house. The

10, 11 and 1 1- can be used for holding useful articles which it is desired to keep out of sight, such as dishes and cooking utensils.

The article of furniture of my invention can be used without the leaves 13, and when set out into a room presents an attractive appearance from either side so that the unsightliness is avoided of exposing the plain back of a case as would ordinarily be done if a bookcase were set out into the room.

My article of furniture is preferably weighted at the bottom as it will ordinarily be higher than the average bookcase.

It will be observed that my article of furniture has among others the following ad vantages: It can be stood out in a room, away from the wall, and yet present an attractive appearance upon both sides, avoiding the unattractive appearance which the back of a bookcase would ordinarily present; it can have all the appearance of a partition wall dividing a room, and yet be temporary and movable, and serve as a cupboard or closet on the side toward the portion of the room screened off; it can be used in a doorway between two rooms, offering facilities to both rooms, and not occupying any floor space which would otherwise be available.

I claim:

1. An article of furniture, comprising a frame having shelves opening to the front thereof, shelves opening to the rear thereof, and screen leaves hinged to the said frame.

2. An article of furniture, comprising a frame having shelves opening to the front thereof, shelves opening to the rear thereof, and screen leaves hinged to said frame, said leaves being hinged to the front vertical edges of said frame.
