Be it known that I, BURTON S. RUPP, a.
citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metallic railway ties, and has for its object the provision of a device of this character provided with im-- proved means for preventing endwise movei ment of the tie with relation to the road bed,
and with improved means for securing the i rail in position upon the tie, said securing means being constructed in such manner as a to impart not only a lateral movement to the clamping plates that hold the rail, but also j to impart a vertical movement to these: plates to thereby render the rail retaining structure reliable and efficient.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a structure for securing the rail to the tie whereby the ra1l is bound both transversely and vertically upon both sides of its base flange by the tightening of a single nut parts omitted, Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of a cushioning block or chair, and, Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective view of one of the clamping plates hereinafter described.

It is frequently desired, particularlyin electric railway construction, to insulate the rails from the ties and to accomplish this object, strips 10 of insulating material are disposed between the rails and clamping plates 11, and the cushioning blocks are recessed at 12 for the reception of these strips of insulating material. The bottom of the tie has openings 13 formed therethrough for the passage of the legs 14 of U-shaped yokes 15. The legs 14: lie outside of and against the clamping plates 11, and said legs have openings 16 and 17 formed therethrough, and the clamping plates have openings 18 and 19 formed therethrough the openings of the clamping plates lying slightly higher than the openings of the legs, and the upper walls of the openings 16 and 17 being beveled while the lower walls ofthe openings 18 and 19 are beveled, but in a direction opposite of the beveling of the openings 16 I and 17. Bolt 20 passes through an opening 21 formed in the block 9, and carries a frusto-conical head 22, the large end of which is disposed outwardly and said head The opposite end of the bolt 20 is provided with screw threads 23 for the reception of a nut 2 1, said nut carrying a frusto-conical extension 25 which passes through the openings 17 and 19. It is apparent that by virtue of this construction, tightening of the nut 24 will draw upon bolt 20 and cause the frustoconical portion 25 of the nut, and the frustbconical head 22 to move inwardly. At this time the frusto-conical head will act against the beveled upper wall of opening 16 and against the beveled lower wall of opening 18 in such manner as to draw downwardly upon the clamping plate in which opening 18 is formed, with great force, and in like manner the frusto-conical head 25 of the nut will, acting against the corresponding beveled wall of openings 17 and 19, draw down upon the other clamping plate with great force. It is apparent that tightening of the nut also tends to draw upon these plates laterally and to back them up and further render the structure a rigid and strong one the upper edge of the side walls of the tie are provided with openings to receive shoulder extensions 27 (see Figs. 3 and 1) that are formed upon the clamping plates 11. To hold the yokes 15 in proper relation to the tie during transit, and while the de vices are being assembled, a bolt, rivet or like fastening device 28 is passed through the yoke and through the bottom of the tie.
The structure herein shown and described is a highly efficient one, while at the same time being a very simple and economical one.
The parts shown and described may be easily and economically manufactured, but when brought into the relation herein shown, they serve the purposes for which they are intended, viz., the efiicient and ready securing of the rail to the tie in such manner as to absolutely preclude any possibility of accidental displacement, in a most etficient manner. It is to be understood, however, that while the elements are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are in tended, the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview, such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Having fully described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a metallic tie, a non-metallic block mounted therein to support the rail, a substantially U-shaped securing element having its transverse portion disposed eXteriorly of the tie and its upstanding arms passing through openings in the tie and extending into the same upon opposite sides of the non-metallic block, vertically movable clamping plates disposed between the upstanding arms of the Ushaped securing element and the nonmetallic block and provided with rail engaging portions, and means engaging the clamping plates and the upstanding arms of the substantially U-shaped securing element, to draw the clamping plates downwardly.
2. In a device of the character described, a hollow metallic tie, a non-metallic block mounted therein to support the rail, a substantially U-shaped securing element having its upstanding arms disposed upon opposite sides of the non-metallic block, vertically movable clamping plates having rail engaging portions and disposed near the upstanding arms of the substantially U-shaped securing element, and adjustable means passing horizontally through the upstanding arms of the substantially U-shaped securing element and the vertically movable clamping plates to draw the latter downwardly.
3. In a device of the character described, a hollow metallic tie, a non-metallic block mounted therein to support the rail, a substantially U-shaped securing element having its upstanding arms disposed upon opposite sides of the non-metallic block, means permanently attaching the substantially U- shaped securing element to the hollow tie, vertically movable clamping plates having rail engaging portions and disposed near the upstanding arms of the substantially U-shaped securing element, means engaging the upstanding arms of the substantially U-shaped securing element and the vertically movable clamping plates to draw the latter downwardly and means disposed between the engaging portions of the clamping plates and the rail to insulate the rail from the tie.
4. In a device of the character described,
a hollow metallic tie, a non-metallic block mounted therein for supporting a rail and provided adjacent the base of the rail with recesses, vertically movable clamping plates provided with rail engaging portions, sections of insulating material disposed between the base of the rail and the rail engaging portions of the clamping plates and extending into the recesses formed in the non-metallic block, and means to draw the clamping plates downwardly, including a substantially U-shaped upstanding securing element permanently attached to the hollow metallic tie.
In a device of the character described, a hollow metallic tie provided in its bottom wall with transverse openings, a substantially U-shaped securing element having its transverse portion mounted upon the eX- terior surface of the bottom wall and its upstanding arm passing through the transverse openings, a non-metallic rail supporting block mounted in the hollow tie, vertically movable clamping plates having rail engaging portions, the upstanding arms and the clamping plates being provided with openings, tapered elements mounted within the openings formed through the upstanding arms and the clamping plates, means to move the tapered elements toward each other, and means to permanently connect the U-shaped securing element with the tie.

In a device of the character described, a hollow metallic tie provided in its bottom wall with transverse openings, a substantially U-shaped securing element having its transverse portion mounted upon the exterior surface of the bottom wall and its upstanding arm passing through the transverse openings, a non-metallic rail supporting block mounted in the hollow tie, vertically movable clamping plates having rail engaging portions, the upstanding arms and the clamping plates being provided with openings, tapered elements mounted within the openings formed through the upstanding arms and the clamping plates, and means to move the tapered elements toward each other.
7. In a device of the character described,
a hollow metallic tie provided in its bottom 1 verse opening", a non-metallic rail supporting block mounted. in the hollow tie, vertically movable clamping plates having rail engaging portions, the upstanding arms and the clamping plates being provided with openings, tapered elem ts mounted within the openings formed through the upstanding arms and the clamping plates, means to move the tapered elements toward each other, means to permanently connect the U- shaped securing element with the tie, and depending elements attached to the tie inwardly of the substantially U-shaped securing element and being free from connection with the clamping plates, to en age the road bed for preventing the tie from slipping thereon.
8. In a device of the character described, a hollow metallic tie formed substantially U- shaped in cross section, a non-metallic rail supporting block mounted therein, a separate tl-shaped securing element having its upstanding arms disposed upon opposite sides of the non-metallic block and provided with openings having their upper walls beveled, vertically movable clamping plates disposed in slidable engagement with the upstanding arms and provided with openings which. have their lower walls beveled in an opposite direction to the beveling of the upper walls of the openings of the upstanding arms, tapered elements passing through the openings of the upstanding arms and the clamping plates, and means to draw the tapered elements toward each other.
9. In a device oil the character described, a hollow metallic tie formed substantially tl-shaped in cross section, a substantially U-shaped securing element and having its upstanding arms disposed within the same and means permanently attaching the substantially U-shaped securing element to the hollow metallic tie to prevent its accidental displacement, and rail securing means mounted within the tie between the upstanding arms and including elements engaging the upstanding arms.
10. in a device of the character described, a holler-r metallic tie formed substantially U- shaped in cross section and provided in its bottom wall with openings, a substantially U-shaped securing element having its base disposed exteriorly of the bottom wall and its upstanding arms passed through the openings of the same, rail securing mechanism with which the upstanding arms c0- operate, and means pern'ianently connecting the base of the substantially U-shaped securing element with the bottom wall of the tie.
