ABRAHAM B. LINE, OF DANVILLE, ILLINOIS.
CURRYCOLVIB.
Specification of.Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. s, iota.
Application filed April 2, 191.3. Serial No. 758,446.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that l, ABRAHAM B. LINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Currycomb, of which thel following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to curry combs, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of that character.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a curry comb which shall be self cleaning in action, or use, as well as convenient, serviceable, and efhcient. It is also the object of the invention to carry out the foregoing object in a simple and convenient manner, the structure consisting of but few parts, which may be inexpensively manufactured and readily assembled.
As a more specific object, the present invention aims to provide a curry comb embodying a back and members pivoted thereto, each having a pair of toothed portions, in order that the respective toothed portions may be alternately brought into operative position as the curry comb is moved back and forth, and in order that the toothed portions may be cleaned as they are swung out of operative position and as the other toothed portions are swung into operative position at the ends of the strokes.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the curry comb constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
In carrying out the invention, reference being had in detail to the drawing, there is provided a back 4, preferably although not necessarily fashioned from sheet metal, and
which has its side edges downturned to form side flanges 5. To the back il, there is secured a handle attaching member 6, to which `the handle 7 is secured. Cross :rods 8 are terminally engaged or riveted through the flanges 5 and are vdisposed adjoining the back et, the vrods being suitably spaced apart in order to accommodate the toothed members `presently described. Fitting between the flanges 5, are the angle members 9, which are preferably valthough not necessarily stamped from sheet metal, and which have 'their elbows fitting over the respective rods 8, so that the elbows are disposed adjoining the back. The edges of the flanges of the angle members 9 are toothed or serrated as at-lO, and the elbows of the angle iron members are provided with instruck straps 1l, embracing the respective rods 8, so as to retain the angle members in position on the rods. In the manner above indicated, the angle members are pivoted by the rods to the back, so that the respective flanges may alternately swing against the back to hold the other flanges at right angles to the back or in operative position.
In use, as the comb is moved in one direction against the body of a horse o-r other animal being curried, the angle members will be swung by their engagement with the animal, so that one set of flanges will swing against the back to hold the other set of flanges in operative position as the comb is moved to the end of the stroke. Then, when the comb is moved in the opposite direction, the angle members will be reversed, so that those flanges which are in operative position will be swung toward and against the back, thus bringing the other flanges into operation. During the reversing operation of the angle members, those toothed flanges which are swung from operative to inoperative position will be cleaned automatically due to their slight drag as the other flanges are swung to operative position. It will thus be manifest that as the comb is reciprocated or moved back and forth, the respective flanges will be alternately brought into operative position, the other or inoperative flanges serving as stops to limit the movement of the flanges which are swung to operative position, and the reversing of the flanges at the ends of the strokes serving to clean the teeth as the flanges are swung out of operative position.
The curry comb thus provided is self cleaning in its use, which is a desirable feature, it not being IieCeSSary to strike the comb against an object to Clean it, which is oustomary with the ordinary curry comb embodying the stationary toothed fianges. 'Ihe other advantages of the present comb will be manifest from the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawing, it being noted that the objects aimed at have been carried out satisfactorily.
l/Vhat is claimed as new is l. In a curry Comb, a back and angle members pivoted at their elbows to the back, the flanges of the angle members being toothed and being designed to alternately swing against the back as the comb is reciprooated.
2. In a curry comb, a back having side flanges, pivot rods terminally engaging the flanges adjoining the back, and angle members fitting between the anges and having their elbows pivoted to the rods, the flanges of the angle members being toothed and being designed to alternately swing against the back as the comb is reoiproeated.
3. In a curry comb, a back having its side edges downturned to form flanges, pivot rods terminally engaging the anges adjoining the back, and angle members fitting between the flanges and having their elbows fitting over the rods, the elbows having instruok straps embracing the rods, the flanges of the angle members being toothed and being designed to alternately swing against the back as the comb is reeiprooated.
In testimony that I Claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
