To all 'whom it may concern:
-Be 1t lmown that I,-LABoRIo GRASSO, an
Italian subject who has .announced his in-. -tention of becominga citizen of the. United States, residing at Bi1oxi,lin the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improve-v ments in InternalCombustion Engines;4 and I do hereby' declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip'tionof the in-v vention, Such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertainsto make' and use the Same. The .present lnvention relates to engines, and has .for its purpose to provlde a construction of engine whereinno packing.,
rings, or istufiing boxes, are required forrthe piston rod, to the end of-greater ease and etliciency in operation. l
The invention hasfor. its further purpose to construct an engine of this type-especially adapted for operation with combustible fuel, and wherein the cylinder head `provides a bearing forl the 'piston rod, and which, with the cylinder proper, lis designed to form a single water jacket.,
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of constructionv and combinations of part-s more fully hereinafter disclosed p`ar' ticularly pointed, out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification .in which like numerals designate like parts in allthe views Figure 1 is a Side elevational view., with the caslng part-lyln sect-ion, of an en-v gine constructed A in accordance with the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view, `withparts in eleva-tion, of the engine.
Referring to the construction inA further detail, '1 designates a closed casing which Ahas an open end ormed with a recess Q,and
has suitablebearings 43 for the crank shaft 4.. The usual flywheel 5is mounted on'said crank shaft.
The engine cylinder '6 is mounted 0n' the casing 1 andts within the recessed end v2 thereof through the medium of the cylinder head 7 in the manner shown.- 'Sa'id cylinder head 7 has an inwardly-disposed or project` ing portion, fitting within `thechalnber of the cylinder .1,'and at its opposite end the cylinder is provided with-ahead 9 .ofthe .usual type. The cylinder head 7 is secured through the Athe plpe 12.
- boxes or packing by a pluralityof bons 7a, 'and thevhna e;- tension 8 may vbe constructed Separately or .cast. 1ntegrally withthe head 7, the'-l atte1 arrangement being preferred.
. The cylindermember and cylinder heads 7 and '9, together with the extensions, are `suitably recessed Vto provide -asingle water jacket 10,- to which the water 1s supplied pipe'll 'and carriedA ofi' through Apistonl is mounted to operatein the cylinder-16, and carries a piston rod 14 which passesthrough a central.opening-15 vformed i inI the .cylinder head 7 and 'extension S, 'and the .walls of said opening provide-a bearing Surface for.' the bearing ring. Orl sleeve, 16l
secured tov the piston rod 14,1 as illustrated. l
With4 4this provision, "the usual stuffing rings ffor-I the y piston rod are d ispensedwlth, and thereby provide a minimum wearing or lr'rictionall surface, and also-produce a better balance for the piston and pistonrod. v v
' The rod .14 passes through the` opening 15 with suiiicient clearness to avoid friction and, the bearing ring 16 islubricated through the -tube 16a. A similar lubricating tube 17a*A is provided for the'cros's head 21.
.A pair of guides-17 are niounted'within 'the casing 1 through the-medium of aplurality of bolts 18 and 19which-pass vthrough Said casing and engage said vguide ways. Thel bolt-s .19 are located ati the juncture 'of the cylindenhead extension: S'and' said guideways, and sleeves 20 and 21S-are 'mountedjon said bolts 18 and 19, "respectively, and
form the v'necessary Spacing elementsv between the engine-leasing, the cylinder exten- .sion and said guideways.'
'operate within the Aguidewayss-17 and con-'- I have -illustrated and described fsatisfacf tory construction's ,'but changes could -fbe made within lthe Spirit 4and l scope o'f my in'- v-ention.
i I claim Irs-fan engine-.the combination of a closed casing havingv an 'open and. recessedv end ;l a cylinder'mountedl on the casing* and having a' head fitting within the :recess ofsaid open. end, said headhavingwan integral portion The usual cross head 21--is :mounted to headprovdug a. jacket, und hzivug n @eu- In ttuumy whereof, I n
