Description
UNITED STATES PATENT FEIGE6 WILLIAM B. MCCLURE, OF ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CART-SADDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 108,614, dated October 25, 1870.
To ad whomI it may concern Beit known that I, WILLIAM B. MCCLURE, of Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved CartSaddle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description oi' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to that class of cart saddles which are provided with rollers, ar` ranged transversely across the groove in which the back-chain lies, for the purpose of easing the movement of the latter as one side ror thevother of the cart may be temporarilyv elevatedor depressed on account of the roughness of the road over which the cart is pass ing, and consists in certain details of construetion, which will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view ol my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a cross-section.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction.
A represents a cart-saddle, of any proper construction, which is provided with the usual groove a for the reception of the baclccliain.
b b b representsolid rollers, which are provided with journals at cach end, as shown. c
c c represent boxes, suitably constructed for the reception of the journals of the rollers D, which are secured in orifices in the flanges a' of the saddle in any proper nia-nner. I preferably, however, cast a iiange, c', upon the boxes, which is provided with screwholes, by means of which it is secured to the saddle by screws, as is clearly shown in the drawing.
The advantages of this construction are as follows: The amount of friction incidental to the revolution of thc rollers is much reduced over the ordinary forms of construction, inasmuch as the rollers rest only on the bearings in the boxes. The boxes may be inserted in the flanges of the saddle without danger of splitting the wood 5 and the whole may be constructed at a cost little above that of the ordinary saddle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cart-saddle A, with groove a, ilanges a', rollers b, and boxes c, when the parts are combined and arranged as described, for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 5th day of September, 1870.
W. B. MCCLURE.-
