SUPPORT FOR DRAWINGS.
To all whom it may com-em Be it known that I, ROBERT E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Drawings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holding or exhibiting devices for drawings and particularly to improvements in the structure shown in my Patent Number 1,081,335, issued May 13, 1913, on a copending application. In that application I describe and claim a device adapted alternately to support mounted prints or small unmounted prints, and in the present structure I make certain additions and modifications which adapt the device to hold larger unmounted prints, or simultaneously to hold a mounted print and an unmounted print; as is often desirable in practice.
Further features are the adjustable mounting of the auxiliary supporting means and the novel form of clip used on the auxiliary supporting means.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a section on the line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig 1. Fig. 6 is a. section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
The device is supported on a standard 6, mounted in any suitable manner as on a base 7. Sliding on the standard 6 is the main clamping member which consists of a hub portion 8 and a cross bar 9 formed integrally therewith. The hub 8 turns freely on the standard 6 and is adjusted vertically on the standard by adjusting the position of a collar 10 upon which it rests. The collar 10 is held in its adjusted positions by a set screw 11. As in my prior application the cross bar 9 is provided with a longitudinal groove 12 in its top face, and with an inclined gripping front surface 13.

provided with an inclined lip 16 projecting toward the cross bar 9 and adapted to enter into clamping relation with the face 13 to hold a flexible sheet 17 (see Figs. 1, 4L and 5), or as is more fully shown in my prior application to retain the upper. edge of a card or other relatively stiff sheet whose lower edge is supported in the groove 12.
Formed at the ends of the cross bar 9 are depending lugs 18 having horizontally alined openings 19 therein. Through these alined openings pass a pair of rods 20 which bear against a boss 21 on the hub 8. As
clearly shown in Fig. 6, the boss 21 extends forward sufficiently to spring the rods 20 considerably between the lugs 18 so that the rods are frictionally maintained in position. The outer end of each rod is bent upward as shown at 22 and the frictional engagement of the rods 20 with the boss '21 is sufficient to maintain these ortions upright.
Mounted to slide on tie upright portions 22 of the rods 20 are bifurcated clamping members 23 of the form clearly shown in the drawings. These straddle the horizontal portions of the rods 20 and enter into wedging engagement therewith to clamp sheets of paper or the like.
In the use of my device the central or main clamping member may be used conjointly with the adjustable side clamps 23 to support a flexible sheet, or the central portion may be used to hold a print mounted on a stifi' card and the clamps 23 may be used to support other flexible sheets, or other arrangements which will readily suggest themselves may be made. The adjustable mounting of the rods 20 make possible the holding of very large sheets and the removal of the auxiliary supports when not in use. The form of the clamp 23 is particularly desirable as prints may be readily inserted or removed with one hand and when clamped cannot be accidentally released.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a support, the combination of a central clamping member adapted to hold a sheet of flexible material, and provided with suo ortin 'uides for horizontal rods a plurality of horizontal rods frictionally retained in said guides and having upwardly extending portions at their outer ends; and bifurcated members slidably mounted one on each of said upwardly extending portions and straddling the horizontal portions of corresponding rods, said bifurcated members being substantially alined with said central clamping member and being adapted to enter into clamping relation with the horizontal portions of said rods to hold a sheet held by the central clamping member.
2. In a support, the combination of a standard; a member provided with guides,
10 mounted on said standard; a pair of horizontal rods adjustably mounted in said guides and having rigid upright end portions; and a pair of bifurcated members one mounted slidably on the upstanding portion of each rod, straddling the horizontal portion of said rod and adapted to enter into clamping relation therewith to hold a flexible sheet.
3. In a support, the combination of a horizontal rod having a substantially vertical, rigid, upturned end; and a bifurcated member slidably mounted on said upturned end and straddling the horizontal portion of the rod to enter into clamping relation therewith.
