SYSTEM OF BOLTING FOR CAR-DOORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENOIT R-EVIRON, a citizen of the Republic of France, and resident of Paris, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Systems of Bolting for Car-Doors, which improvements are fully set forth in the following speci fication.
This invention relates to a device for effecting the closing of doors of railway carriages, motor cars and other vehicles at the moment of starting, and for insuring the locking of the doors during the movement of the vehicle. The closing and locking are eifected automatically by a force which is derived from the wheels or axles of the vehicle and is transmitted through the agency of a rotatable operating element or prime mover and a suitable transmission device to the bolts, accomplishing either the locking alone, or both the closing and locking of the doors. The operating element is driven from the wheels or" the vehicle in some suitable manner, and serves to transform the rotary movement imparted to it, into rectilinear movement, the latter movement being utilized to produce the required movement of the bolts.
The bolt or bolts may have either a rectilinear or a pivotal or swinging movement, and in case the vehicle has two or more doors, the latter may be controlled separately, or, for the purpose of simplifying the construction, they may be secured to one or more bars controlled from the afore-mentioned operating element. The bars themselves may either be shifted endwise, or be rocked about their longitudinal axes to produce the actuation of the bolts.
An embodiment of the invention is illu trated in the accompanying drawing, where- 1n:

In the construction shown in Fig. 1, h indicates, generally, the bar for actuating the hereinafter-described bolts, and a the prime mover or operating element from which the movement of the said bar is obtained. This prime mover, or operating element is best shown in Fig. 4L, and is therein represented as consisting of a hollow, substantially cylindrical shell or case which rotates about a vertical spindle e mounted in and carried by a suitable bracket a pivotally suspended beneath the floor of the carriage, the said bracket being equipped with bearings for the ends of the spindle.
The aforesaid shell or case is driven from the axle c by means of a belt 6 or similar flexible element, and it carries within its interior a governor (Z of any preferred type, the governor being so mounted as to rotate with said case. The arms or levers of the governor are engaged with a collar or like member f or device which is fast on the spindle 6, so that the outward movement of said arms, due to the action of centrifugal force thereon, will result in the spindle being raised. It is this vertical movement of the spindle that is utilized to effect the movement of the bar it necessary to actuate the bolts, such movement being imparted to said bar through the agency of a transmission connection between the bar and spindle- Referring to Figs. 1, 3 and 4, the transmission device is shown as comprising a flexible rope or cable g which is connected at one end (Fig. 4:), to the lower end of the spindle, and at the other end either directly to the adjacent end of bar It, (Fig. l) or to an arm g (Fig. fastened to said bar. In either instance, the upward movement of the spindle, produced by the action of the governor, exerts a positive traction upon the rope or cable which, in turn, produces either an endwise or a rotary movement of the bar, according as one or the other of the constructions above described is adopted. The same results are also obtainable with the construction depicted in Fig. 5, wherein the cable or other flexible element 7' is connected to the spindle through the intermediary of a bell-crank j and link 9", instead of directly to the spindle. The cable, rope or like flexible element g is preferably incased in a flexible sheath or cover g, which may be formed of coiled wire, as shownin Fig. 1, or in any other desired manner, and is fastened at one end to the bottom of the bracket (4 and at its other end to a bracket on. the carriage.
The bar it is, for convenience, arranged on the outside of the car, (though it may have some other suitable mounting, if preferred), and is equipped with the bolts for controlling the several doors. These bolts may be of any desired types, and may operate in different ways: Thus, the bolts 1 and 1, (Fig. 1), depend from said bar and are rigidly connected to the same, so as to move laterally or sidewise when the bar is shifted endwise, but whereas the bolt 1 is intended merely to lock the door previously closed by hand, the bolt 4: is designed to close the corresponding door when the carriage starts and to subsequently lock it, this bolt acting on an inclined guide or cam 70, (Figs. 1 and 2). The bolts 2 and 3 are likewise intended merely to lock the doors, after the latter have been closed manually, but instead of being moved bodily sidewise with the bar, they are pivoted to the side of the carriage and have a loose con nection with said bar, so as to be swung or turned upon their pivots when the bar is shifted endwise, the bolt 3 being operable upon a door which is closable in the opposite direction from that with which bolt 2 coacts. A suitable spring 1', connected to the bar, is employed to return said bar and, consequently, the bolts actuated thereby, to initial position, and supports .9 are provided for said bar at suitable points on the carriage. Where the bar is rocked about its longitudinal axis, instead of being shifted endwise, the bolts 5 and 6, (Fig. 3), are employed, these bolts being swung or rocked when the bar is turned, so as to engage the doors. They may be utilized either to merely lock the doors, or to both close and lock said doors. The bolts may operate with or without suitable staples, such, for instance, as the two-part staple Z, Z, of the bolt 1.
I claim- 1. Mechanism for automatically locking a vehicle door comprising, in combination, a rotary operating element having an endwise movable vertical spindle, means for driving said operating element, a movable member adapted for connection to the vehicle and provided with door-engaging means, and a f exible connection between said member and said spindle for moving the former during the endwise movement of the latter.
2. In a mechanism for automatically loclc ing the door of a vehicle while the latter is in motion, the combination of a rotary operating element embodying an endwise movable spindle and a governor connected thereto, means for driving said operating element, a movable member adapted for connection to the vehicle and having door-engaging means operatively connected thereto, and a flexible connection between said member and said spindle for moving the former during the endwise movement of the latter.
3. Automatic door-locking mechanism for vehicles, comprising in combination, a rotary operating element having an endwise movable spindle, a bracket wherein said spindle is mounted pivoted beneath the floor of the vehicle, means for driving said operating element, a movable member carried by the vehicle and provided with door-engaging means, and a flexible connection between said member and said spindle adapted to be pulled in one direction during the endwise movement of the spindle to move said member.
4:. Automatic door-locking mechanism for vehicles, comprising, in combination, a hollow operating element, a spindle whereon said operating element is rotatably mounted, means for driving said operating element, means connected to said operating element within the interior thereof for moving said spindle endwise when said operating element is rotated, a movable member connected to the vehicle and provided with door-engaging means, and a connection between said member and said spindle for actuating the former during the endwise movement of the latter.
5. Automatic door-locking mechanism for vehicles, comprising, in combination, a hollow, rotary operating element, a belt drive therefor, a movable member connected to the vehicle and provided with door-engaging means, and connections between said member and said operating element for actuating the former during the rotation of the latter.
6. Automatic door-locking mechanism for vehicles, comprising, in combination, a hollow, rotary operating element pivotally suspended from the floor of the vehicle, a belt directly engaged with said operating element for driving the same, a movable member con nected to the vehicle and provided with door-engaging means, and connections between said member and said operating element for actuating the former during the rotation of the latter.
7. Automatic door-locking mechanism for vehicles, comprising, in combination, a hollow operating element, a belt drive therefor, an endwise-movable spindle whereon said operating element is mounted, a support for.
