To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. SIM- Mons, of Burlington,- in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Door-Operating Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in door operating mechanism and more particularly to means for closing and locking doors of vehicles, such as automobi'les,-the object of the present invention being to provide simple and eflicient devices operable from the controlling lever of the emergency brake for closing the doors ofthe vehicle and locking them in closed position when said lever is operated to release the brake and for unlocking the doors when said lever is moved in a direction to apply the brakes.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists. in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing a portion of a vehicle and illustrating the position of the parts of the door operating end of the rod 16-1sp1votally connected with one arm of a lever 17, the latter being piv-' mechanism when the door is closed and locked; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the positions of the parts when the door is open; Fig. 3 is a section view partly in elevation showing the devices connected with the doors; Fig. 4 is an elevation (taken at right 5 in the body 1 and provided at its inner end angles to Fig. 1) of the devices connected with the brake lever, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view showing the intermediate sleeve or tubular shaft section and the slotted arm thereon. s v

The shaft sections 4 are provided at or near their outer ends with arms 9,with the upper ends of which, rods 10 are pivotally connected, and to these rods heads 11 are adjustably at-tached'and pivotally connected to lugs 12 secured to the hinged sides of the doors 2. A spring '13 is attached at one end to each arm 9 and at the, otherend to a fixed part of the body 1,said springs tending to impart motion in one direction to the arms 9 and *this motion is imparted to the doors to swing them open when they shall have been released by the latches 3 and when the tubular shaft sect-ions 4 are free to turn. The intermediate shaft section 5 is provided with a depending arm 14 having a slotted portion 15, with which latter, one end of a rod l'6'is connected. The forward otally supported between its ends and having its upper arm slotted.
A shaft 18 is mounted in suitable bearings with an arm 19 connected with the slotted arm 23 of the lever 17 by means of a pin 20, and with this pin the brake rod 21 is attached. The brake lever 22 is secured to the shaft 18, and is provided with a suitable detent to engage a toothed segment 24,
whereby said lever may be locked in the position to which it may be shifted.
When the brake lever is disposed in position to release the brake (as shown in F igt 1) the upper shoulders 78 of the tubular vshaft sections will be in contact with each other, and as the brake lever will be locked when the brake is released, movement of the shaft sections 44 will be prevented by ongagement of the upper shoulders 78 of the shaft sections 4-5, and hence the doors will be locked in their closed positions, so
that they cannot be opened when the brake is released, even though the latch devices 3 may be released.
\Vhen the brake lever is moved in a direction to set the brake (as shown in Fig. 2) the intermediate shaft sections 5 will be turned in a direction to move the shoulders 8 of said shaft section away from the shoulders 7 of the shaft sections 4, thus unlocking the latter. Should the doors (or either of them) be now released by operation of latch devices 3, the spring 13 attached to the arm 9 with which the door thus released is released, will pull said arm 9 forwardly and thus transmit motion through the medium of the rod 10, to swing the door open,at the same time turning the shaft section 4 with which said arm 9 is connected until its upper shoulder 7 engages an upper shoulder 8 of the intermediate shaft section 5.
When the brake lever moved from the brake set position in Fig. 2 to the brake release position shown in Fig. 1, motion will be imparted to the central shaft section 5 and its upper shoulders 8, engaging the upper shoulders 7 of the shaftsection or sections 4, will cause the latter to turn and impart motion, through the medium of the arm (or arms) 9 and the rod (or rods) 10 to door (or doors) to swing the same to closed and locked p0sition,at the same time putting tension on the spring (or springs) 13 so that they will be in condition to swing the doors open after the brake lever shall have been moved to brake release position (and when the doors shall be unlatched) as previously explained.
Having fully described my invention what I- claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. The combination with a door and an operating lever, of cooperating shaft sections having limited rotary movement relatively to each other, connections between one of said shaft sections and the door, a spring for turning said shaft sections and its connections in a direction to swing the door open, and connections between the operating lever and the other shaft section for turning the latter in either direction.
2. The combination with a-door and an operating lever, of alining shaft sections having overlapping shoulders and disposed to permit limited rotary movement of said shaft sections relatively to each other, connections between the operating lever and one of said shaft sections for turning the latter in both directions, connections between spring connected with said last-mentioned connections for moving the latter in a direction to swing the door open.
3. The combination with a door and an operating lever, of intermeshing shaft sections adapted to have limited rotary movement relatively to each other, connections between one of said shaft sections and the door, a spring connected with said connections for moving the latter in one direction, and connections between the operating lever and the other shaft section for moving the latter in one direction relatively to the other shaft section to unlock the door, and for moving it in the reverse direction to turn said other shaft section and effect the closing of the door.
4:. The combination with a vehicle and two oppositely disposed doors, of intermeshing alining shaft sections adapted to have limited rotary movement relatively to each other, an operating lever connected with the intermediate shaft section, connections be tween the other shaft sections and the respective doors, and spring, connected with said connections.
5. The combination with a vehicle, a door therefor, and a brake lover, of intermeshing shaft sections adapted to have limited rotary movement relatively to each other, an arm on-one of said shaft sections, connections between said arm and the door, a spring fixed at one end and attached at its other end to said arm, an arm on the other shaft section and connections between said last-mentioned arm and the brake lever.
6. The combination with a vehicle, and a door therefor, of intermeshing shaft sections adapted to have limited rotary movement relatively to each other, springactuated connections between one of said shafts'ections and the door, an arm on the other shaft section, a lever pivoted between its ends, a rod connecting one arm of said lever with the arm on said shaft section, and a brake lever provided with a short arm connected with the other arm of said first-mentioned lever.
