Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH THOMAS B. Annnnws, a citizen of the United States, residing at Truxno, in the parish of Union and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Ties and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in railroad ties and more particularly to a combined tie and fastener, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character wherein the rails are moved upon the ties, and means combined with the ties for securely fastening the rails thereto and hold the same against lateral movement.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined rail and fastener which will possess advantages in points of eifi cienoy and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
ith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the novel features of construction and the, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of a tie ,constructed in accordance with my invention, illustrating the application of my improved fasteners; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the fastening bolts; Fig. at is a top plan View, the tread of the rail being removed and the web thereof being shown in section; Fig. -5 is a side elevation of one end of the tie; Fig. 6 is a similar View illustrating the side opposite that shown in Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is a top plan view of a portion of the tie.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the body of the tie which is substantially U-shaped in cross section, as shown in Fig. 1 and is provided adjacent each end thereof with the cut away portions 2, the material struck out from said cut away portions bein disposed at right angles to the side walls of the body of the'tie and extending inwardly toward each other, said material being arranged in a horizontal position and adapted to form a seat upon which the rail 3 rests.
In connection with my improved tie, I provide novel fastening means which consist of the bolts 4 arranged upon opposite sides of the rail and adapted to engage the base thereof. The bolts 4 are bent at right angles at their lower ends, as shown at 5, and disposed through suitable openings 6 in the side walls of the tie so that the lower ends of the bolts are arranged upon the interior of the tie. lVashers 7 are mounted upon the inner end of the bolt and nuts 8 are threaded thereon to securely hold the same in position. A cotter pin 9 extends transversely through the bolt at the inner end thereof to prevent the removal of the nut 8. The outer end of the bolt extends upwardly in parallel relation with the side wall of the tie and the head 10 thereof ex tends at right angles to the body of the bolt and engages over the base flange of the rail.
The head 10 of the bolt 4 is provided with a recess 11 which is adapted to receive the side edges of the cut away portion 2 so as to hold the bolt against turning movement within the opening 6. From this it will be seen that in placing the bolts 4 in position, the head 10 is engaged over the base of the rail and the lower end thereof inserted through the opening 6, the same being then pushed into position until the washer 7 and nut '8 engage with the inner end thereof.
It will be apparent that by tightening the nut 8 securely upon the bolt, the head 10 will be rigidly held into engagement with the base of the rail and prevent lateral movement thereof. It will also be apparent that by having the recess 11 engaging the side walls of the cut away portion 2 itwill prevent turning movement of the bolts within the openings 6.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that I have provided a simple and durable combined tie and fastener whereby the rails may be quickly and readily laid and rigidly held against lateral movement.
It will also be apparent that the fastening means may be quickly and readily applied or removed therefrom.
It will also be obvious that the device in itself is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
The body of the tie 1 may be constructed of metal, wood or any suitable material desired.
llhile I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class described including a U-shaped tie having spaced openings formed in the side walls to receive the bases of the rails, bolts arranged within said openings, heads formed upon the upper ends of the bolts and adapted to engage with the bases of the rails to hold the same against lateral movement and said heads being provided with recesses adapted to engage the side walls of the cut away portions to hold the bolts against turning movement.
2. A device of the class described including a- U-shaped tie having cut away portions in which the bases of the rails are arranged, the side walls of said tie being provided with spaced openings adjacent each end, fastening means including b'olts having their lower ends bent at right angles and disposed through said openings, heads formed upon the upper ends of said bolts and engaged over the bases of the rails, said heads being provided with recesses adapted to receive the side walls of the cut away portions to hold the bolts against turning movement, and nuts threaded upon the inner ends of said bolts to securely hold the same in position.
