INVENTOR J7 .Fmmit Tfiaya' WITNESSES FRANK THAYER, OF GALLERY, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 3,1914.
Application filed May 7, 1913. Serial No. 766,123.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK THAYER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Gallery, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to a quick acting structure that can be used in connection with monkey, bicycle, nut and other types of wrenches.
The primary object of my invention is to provide simple and efiective means in connection with the adjustable jaw of the whench, whereby the jaw can be rapidly shifted and at the same time'permit of a minute adjustment being obtained when occasion so requires.
Another object of this invention is to provide a nut and rack wrench wherein novel means is employed for holding the nut normally in engagement with the rack of the wrench, whereby the adjustable jaw will be held against accidental displacement.
A- further object of this invention is to provide a wrench of the above type consisting of comparatively few parts that are inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble, and highly eflicient for the purposes for which they are intended.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
7 Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view partly broken away and partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the wrench. V
A wrench in accordance with this invention comprises a fiat shank 1 having the outer end thereof provided with an integral or fixed jaw 2 that presents a flat gripping surface 3 at right angles to the front side of the shank l. The front side of the shank 1 is provided with a rack 1 having concave equally spaced ratchet teeth.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is an adjustable aw body 5 having a longitudinal opening 6 to receive the shank 1. The aw body 5 has a aw 7 presenting a flat gripping surface 8 that confronts and coiiperates with the fiat gripping surface 3 of the jaw 2 in gripping the facets of a nut. The jaw body 5 has a transverse slot 9 and arranged longitudinally of said slot and screwed into the body 5 is a screw 10. Loosely mounted upon the screw 10 within the slot 9 is a nut 11 that has a longitudinal opening 12 of greater diameter than the screw 10, whereby the nut will be loosely held within the slot 9 by said screw. The nut 11 has the periphery thereof provided with spiral teeth 13 adapted to mesh with the rack 4 of the shank 1. The nut also has an annular groove 14 and extending into said groove and embracing approximately one-half of the nut is a yoke 15 provided with a stem 16. The stem 16 is supported by a casing 17 arranged at the front side of the jaw body 5, said casing having one end thereof secured to the jaw 7 by a screw 18 or other fastening means, while the opposite end of the casing extends under the inner end of the aw body and is held by the screw 10. Encircling the stem 16, be tween the casing 17 and the yoke 15 is a coiled compression spring 19 that holds the yoke 15 normally in the groove 14 and the nut 11 normally in engagement with the shank 1.
To rapidly adjust the jaw body 5, the nut 11 is gripped between the fingers and pulled outwardly, that is, toward the casing 17, and the adjustable jaw body can then be rapidly shifted longitudinally of the shank 1. By releasing the nut the coiled spring 19 places the same in engagement with the shank and then the nut can be rotated to minutely adjust the jaw body 5 relatively to said shank.
The wrench in its entirety is made of light and durable metal, and while in the drawing, there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In a wrench, the combination with a shank having a fixed jaw and a rack in the front side thereof, of an adjustable jaw body slidably mounted upon said shank and having a jaw confronting the jaw of said shank, said adjustable jaw body having a transverse slot formed therein, a screw arranged longitudi nally of said slot, a nut loosely mounted in said slot and retained therein by said screw thereof held by said screw and the opposite and adapted to engage the rack of said shank, said nut having an annular groove :torined thercln, a casing having one end circling the stem of said yoke for holding;
said yoke in engagement With said nut and 10 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressingthe Gommissioner'of Patents,
