To all whom t may concern Be it known that'l, Osons B. CLAYTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston Heights, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful lmp-rovements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in oil burners.
This burner belongs to that class of burners, wherein the fuel .il is sprayed throughy the discharge nozzle by means of steam pres sure, the steam being formed in a heating coil and discharged through the nozzle in the well known manner, and the object of this invention is to provide a. burner of the character described whereby the water supplied to the coil, the fuel supplied to. the burner and lthe discharge of the steam th1'ough..the nozzle may be simultaneously regulated so that as the fuel supply is increased,jfthe water supplied to the coil will be correspond. ingly increased and the nozzle opening'ifor the steam discharge he also correspondingly increased.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention has particular relation to `certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parte', anexample of' which is given in t is speoication and illustrated 4in the Aawcompanyin.et drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of the burner, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. *'Referrin now more particularly to the drawing, w erein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in eachof` the figures, the numeral 1 refers to a block which composes the body ofthe burner and which is `armed of any suitable material. Que end of this block carries the discharge nozzle 2 having a tapering free end with a discharge Outlet 3. Alined with the outlet 3 and extending entirely through the block is a needie valve 4 which is provided `with a length- 1 wise fuel passage way 5 extending lfrom end to end thereof. The free end of the needle valve 4 is tapering and is designed to control the nozzle outlet 3. The other end of the block 1 a supportimr` sleeve 6 which y T0 the ends of the arm 8 are secured, respectively, the needle valves 9 and 10, the former ofwhich controls the flow of water irom the water supply to the stealh generating coil 10, and the latter of which controls the supply of fuel oil from the oil supply to the burner nozzle. The water from which the Jsteam is formed is supplied from any suitable source through the water pipe 11 to the passageway 12 which extends lthrough the block 1 into the chamber 13.
From this chamber, the water passes through the passageway 14 to the passage way 15 which leads to the coil where itis formed into steam in the usual manner and the steam is delivered through the passage 16 t from said coil into the burner nozzle 2 and discharged through the opening 3 around the tapering end of the needle valve 4. The needle valve 9 extends through a stuffing box 17, carried by the block 1, to the chamber 18 and its tapering free end is arranged to control the discharge -of the passage way 12. into the chamber 13.
The fuel oilis fed from an' suitable supply through the pipe 18 into te passageway 19 which extends through block 1 and communicates with chamber 20- in said block. The needle valve l0 passes through a suitable stalling box 21 carried by the block 1 and its tapering free Iend extends into the chamber 20 and is a-lined with the passageway 19 and controls the discharge' of fue-l from said passageway into said chamber. The needle valve is provided with a lengthwise passageway 22, which extends from the orifice 23, near the free end thereof, entirely to the other end and connects with a passageway 24e in the arm S. This last mentioned passageway extends through said arm and connects with the passa eway 5 or'- the needle valve 4. The fuel is a mittedthrough the pipe 18 and passage way 19 into the chamber 20 and passes thence through the orifice23 alongl the passageway 22 of the needle valve l0 into the passageway 24 and thence thro-ugh the needle valve 4 to the discharge nozzle.
A hand screw 25 is threaded through th/e outer end E26 ofthe sleeve 6 and its innfnd engages with the arm 8, as shown, and"by-a manipulation of said screw, the' said arm `8 may be rnoved in either direction in the slot 7 and the position of the needle valves 4, 9 and 10 thus regulated and the supply of water to the coil and fuel to the burner nozzle thus controlled' and simultaneously therewith the nozzle opening 3 enlarged or contracted.
The fuel discharged through the burner nozzle is sprayed by the steam escaping through the nozzle opening 3 and it' is the object of this invention to provide a burner whereby as the fuel supply is increased, the spraying jet of steam will also be increased and a uniform fuel spray will thus be provided whether there is a large or small supply of fuel to the burner nozzle.
The numeral 27 refers to a cylindrical shaped muffler, which is shown partially broken away. This muflier is not essential, but may be used to Inutile the roar caused by the combustion of the fuel spray around the nozzle 3.
What I claim is l. A device of the character described including a block and a nozzle carried thereby, a needle valve passing through said block and alined with the nozzle and having a passageway therethrough, a fuel passageway extending through said block and communicating with the passageway in said valve, a water passageway extending through said block, valves controlling said fuel and water passageways, means for simultaneously operating all of said valves and a steam generator communicating with said water passageway and` discharging steam into said nozzle and around the valve alined therewith.
2. A device of the character described, including a suitable block having a water passageway and a fuel passageway extending therethrough, a' burner nozzle carried by the block, .a valve extending through the block and alined with the nozzle and having a passageway extending therethrough, a valve controlling said fuel passageway, said last mentioned valvehaving a lengthwise passageway extending therethrough and communicating with the passagewayof the nozzle controlling valve so as to admit fuel from said fuel passageway through said last mentioned valve, a means for simultaneously operating both offsaid valves, and a steam generator having communication with the water passageway and discharging steam into the nozzle and around the nozzle controlling valve.

A device of the character described consisting of a block having a water passageway and a fuel passageway extending therethrough, a discharge nozzle carried by said block provided with a discharge outlet, a needle valve extending through the block and passing axially through the nozzle and having its free end projecting into said outlet, said needle valve having a lengthwise passageway therethrough which communicates with the fuel passageway, a supporting sleeve carried by the block on the opposite side thereof from said nozzle and provided with a lengthwise slot therein, an arm slidable in said slot, to the central portion of which said needle valve is secured, needle valves carried by the ends of said arm, whose free ends, respectively, project into Said water passageway and fuel passageway and control the flow of fluid therethrough, a mechanism connected to said arm for adjusting-the same in the slot of said sleeve, and a steam generating mechanism communicating with the water passageway and discharging steam into the nozzle and around the nozzle controlling valve.
4. A device of the character described, including a block having a water passageway and a fuel passageway extending therethrough, a discharge nozzle carried by one end of said block and provided with ya discharge outlet, a needle valve extending through the block and passing axially through the nozzle whose free end controls.

5. A device of the character described consisting of a block having a water passageway and a fuel passageway extending therethrough, a discharge nozzle carried by said block provided with a discharge outlet, a hollow needle valve extending through the block and passing axially through the nozzle and having its free end projecting into said outlet, the interior of said valve communicating with said fuel passageway, a supporting sleeve carried by the block on the opposite side thereof from said nozale and provided with a lengthwise slot therein, an arm slidable in said slot, to the central portionl of which said needle vlvalve is se` noeaeei cured, needle valves carried by the .ends of said arm, whose free ends, respectively, project into said water passageway and fue] passageway and control the flow of fluid therethrough, a mechanism connected to said arm for adjusting 'the samein the slot of said sleeve, and a steam generator communieating with said water ,passageway and discharging into the discharge nozzle.
6. A device of the character described, including a block having a water 'passageway and a fuel passageway extending there through, a discharge nozzle carried by one end of said block and provided with a discharge outlet, a needle valve extending through the block and passing axially through the nozzle whose free end controls the nozzle outlet, said needle valve having a lengthwise passageway extending there through, a supportingzsleeve carried by the block on the opposite side thereof from said nozzle and provided with a lengthwise slot therein, an arm slidable in said slot, to the central portion of which said needle valve is secured, said arm havingva lengthwise pas sageway therein which communicates with the passageway oi' said needle valve, a needlevalve carried by one end of said arm whose free end passes into said block and projects into the fuel passageway and controls the flow of fuel therethrough, said last mentioned valve Vbeing provided with an internal passageway, one end of which oommunicates with the fuel passageway in said arm, a means for adjusting said arm and thereby controlling the position of said needle valves, and a steam generator communi-v cating with said water passageway and discharging into the interior of thedischarge nozzle.
