'UNITF STATES PATENT OFFICE ROY D. KING, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOI-IN NELSON, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HINGE.
To aZZ whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, Ror D. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in ythe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains particularly to spring hinges, and more especially to hinges adapted for use in connection with screen doors.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a hinge o'f improved and simplified construction, the leaves of which may be readily disconnected from each other to enable the removal of the door to be effected.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l represents a front elevational view of the improved hinge; Fig. 2, a side elevational view of the same; Fig. 3, a section taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. el, a transverse section taken as indicated at line e of Fig. l, and Fig. 5, an inner View of a spring-adjusting barrel employed.
rlhe improved hinge comprises leaves A, A; a removable pintle or connecting-pm A2; a spring A3; and a spring-adjusting barrel A4.
The leaf A is provided with end-flanges l and a spring-housing or barrel 2. The housing 2 is cut away at its upper end to accommodate the revoluble spring-adjusting member A4.
The leaf A is provided with end-flcnges 3 which embrace the flanges l of the leaf A.
The spring A3 is provided at `one end with an arm l which projects through the housing Q and bears against the outer surface of the leaf A. At the other end of the spring is a projection 5 which is received in a recess 6 with which the cup-shaped member A4 is provided in its bottom or end wall. The member A4 is provided circumferentially with perforations 7, any one of which is adapted to receive the reduced extremity of the stop-pin S, the outer end of which is adapted to bear against the outer surface of the leaf A.
Tension may be placed on the spring by rotating the cup-shaped member A4. This may be done by means of a suitable implement, or by means of a nail inserted through one of the openings 7. After rotating the Specification of Letters Patent.

member A4 sufficiently to place the spring A3 under the desired tension, t-he stud or stop 8 is inserted and allowed to bear against the leaf A, as shown in the drawing.
The pintle A2 has its upper end provided with a head or flange 9 and its lower end is provided with a circumferential groove 10 affording shoulders which adapt it to engage the upper and lower surface respectively of the lower flange 3 of the leaf A, as shown in Fig. 3. This engagement occurs automatically when the spring is placed under tension, the tendency being to force the lower end of the pintle to an eccentric position, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
In use, one leaf of the hinge is connected with the door-j amb, and the other with the l door. Then it is desired to disconnect the door, the member A4 may be rotated slightly by the use of an implement, the stud 8 may then be withdrawn, and the member A4 may then be allowed -to rotate until the spring is no longer under tension. The pintle may then be readily withdrawn.
By employing the hollow member A4, room is afforded for insertion of a nail or implement, which may extend past thev pintle, so that a secure engagement of the imple-ment with the member A4 will be insured. It will be noted that the groove 10 at the lower end of the pintle not only serves to prevent the pintle from working from its place, but also serves to strengthen the hinge by engagement with the lower flange 3.
A hinge of the construction described is simple, cheap and durable; such a hinge is capable of being readily dismembered and enables adjustment of the spring to any desired tension to be readily effected.
That I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. A spring hinge comprising a leaf provided with end flanges and with a spring housing which is cut away adjacent one flange, a leaf provided with end flanges embracing the end flanges of the first-named leaf, a spring in said housing having one extremity connected with one of said leaves, a cup shaped, revoluble, springadjusting member confined between said housing and the adjacent flange of said first-named leaf, said springadjusting member having its bottom portion connected with said spring and having its circumferential port-ion provided with a series of perforations, a stud adapted to engage said perforations, and a pintle extending through the flanges of said leaves, through the bottom of said springadjusting member and through said coilspring.
2. A spring hinge comprising a pair of leaves provided with upper and lower flanges, one of said leaves equipped with a. spring-housing, a spring in said housing and connected with one of said leaves, a
revoluble, spring-adjusting nienlher con-V of one of said leaves.
