The device may be arrangedand adapted for attachment to" a carriage or tractor of any desirable typefbut forithe purpose of illustration i.-is shown in connection with a'tractor likcitliat set forth in an splicetion filedby me on april 1,' 1912,: Se'r1al No;
5 whereby the machine may be steered and turned. The specific construction and arrangement of the tractor by itself forms no part of the present invention and no further descriptionthereof will be given in the present application except as to such parts that are necessary to the -full'understanding of the invention or enter. into the combinations of the claims.
The implement carrier or dragframe is shown attached tothe tractor through the medium of a hinged parallelogram frame which cooperates with the adjusting and raising and lowering device as fully set forth in a' companion application Serial- No. a 7 04,036'filed herewith for a tilling machine. ,The tractor is provided at itsrear 3 53. with brackets 6 near the top and bOtte-Yi of the pedestal side frames 2.- These brackets 6 are provided with bearings whose axes are in the same vertical plane, The upper and lower'member's 7 of the parallelogram frame are hinged at one end tothese brackets 6 and at their outer ends to the vertical frame .members 8, the vertical distance between the. 30
centers of the axes of the inner and outer pivots'being the same. The adjusting and raising aflid lowering device includes a yoke 9 pivoted at its'inner end about 'the'iaxis of the upper brackets 6 and haying ,a'swivel block 10 atits outer .end. A nut '11 is rotatably mounted in the swivel block 10 andhas a screw .12 workin therethrough .whose lower end is hinged about the axis of the pivota8 which connects the upper parallelogram frame members '1. and-the vertical members 8tl1ereof. The nut 11 is provided with a handw'heel 13 for rotating it. n
A rod 14 is pivoted at one end to the yoke mb 9 and its opposite end portion is telescoped within,a hollow screw 15. The rod 14 is provided with a longitudinal slot 16 through which a pin'flZ on tliehollow screw'15 projects, sothat tho-rod and-Ware permitted 1 independent endwise movement but are pre 'nut 19 which is swiveled in a swivel support 20 having trunnions 21 journaled in 9.1::
ings 22 on the carriage frame 1. *Thenut 19 may be rotated through the medium of any suitable driving mechanism which may obviously derive its power from the motor.
which propels the tractor or any other source of power specially provided.
An operating lever 23 is connected to a clutch mechanism so that when the lever is moved'in one direction the nut 19 is rotated to move the screw and rod lengthwise in the proper direction to raise the parallelogramframe with the implement carrier or drag thereon, and when the lever is moved in the opposite direction the screw and rod, are moved reversely tolower the parallelogram frame and implement holder. This mecha nism is shown and described in detail in the said other application Serial No. 704,036 filed herewith. Hence, no further descrip tion is necessary in .the present application.
The drag as shown comprises an expansible and contractible frame hinged at one sideto the parallelogram frame. This drag frame has side members composed of pairs of spaced channels 24 placed with their webs vertical. The side members are hinged at one end on the lower cross bar 8" of the parallelogram frame and their outer end portions are connected by a cross bar 25. Yokes 26 are hinged to the cross ar 25 at one end and are provided at their opposite ends with cross members 27 having openings therethrough. Bolts 28 are hinged at one end on the upper cross bar 8' of the parallelogram frame and are slidably fitted in the openin s in the cross members 27. Portions of t e bolts 28 are screw-threaded to fit nuts 29 swiveled in cross supports 30 on the yokes 26 at about the middle thereof. By turning the nuts the bolts are moved lengthwise in either direction, thereby tilting the implement holder frame with respect to the par allelogram frame. I
Pivotally mounted on bearings 31 secured to the bottoms of the channel side members 24 of the implement holder frame are'yokes 82 having toothed sectors 33 extending up between the channels. The teeth of these sectors are engaged by worm screws 34 jour-- naled in brackets 35 on the top ofsaid channel side members 24. The end portions of these worm screws are pijovided with olyg mar faces 36 to be engaged by a suita le wrmu for turning the worm screws. By manipulating the worm screws the yokes are rocked upon their pivots in eitherdirection and are held atany desirable angle by said worm screws.
Transverse channel members 3'7 are arranged in pairs with their webs vertical and" flanges outward. These members are riveted Ola-counterpart bracket extensions 38 of said yokes 32; and riveted to the middle portions of the respective pairs of channels are strut members or castings 39 having end portions which are counterparts of the channel memhere so as to provide seats therefor. These members constitute implement holder beams. Slidably fitted over the channel members 37 are channel members 40. The flanges of the channel members .37 and 40 are provided with a multiplicity of perforations 41 adapted to register and receive locking pins heremafter specified. The perforations 41 are arranged in like series on each side of the longitudinal center of thefdrag-frame. The
channel members 37 and 40 have their flanges extended laterally, the former at their outer ends and the latter at their inner ends, and riveted thereto are. oppositely disposed substantially U-shape clips 42 in which rightand left hand doublescrews 43 are swiveled. Th'e screws have collars 4 located between the clips provided with polygonal faces for the reception of a wrench. Locking members 45 have shank portions 45' threaded on the screws 43. They also have pins 46 adapted to'enter the registered perforations 41 in the flanges of the channel members. Portions of tlie shanks 45 are made square so as to work in square notches in the flanges of the channel members in order to hold them from turning; while inwardly from said square portions they are rounded in order to permit them. to turn after the square portions are moved clear of said notches. By rotating the screws the.
locking members are drawn toward each,
other to bring the projections 46 into the perforations 41 and thereby lock the sliding channel members with respect to the fixed ones. The sliding channel members 40 are connected at their outer ends by cross bars 47 having end plates 48 riveted to the webportions of said members. The implement carrier or drag thus comprises a rigid frame having extensible transverse members on which individual holdersfor the implements to be presently described are adj ustably and interchangeably mounted.
he middle strut member 39 is provided Wlth a central vertical opening 49 through which the shank of an implement may be passed. This-opening 49 is preferably made to correspond with the contour of a shank 50 havin' flattened opposite faces whereby the shan is permitted endwise movement but prevented from rotating therein. The striit'member is provided with a circular re cess 51 having tapered side-walls adapted to receive a nut 52 having a beveled flanged 'end portion-which is a counterpart of the recessed portion of the strut. A securing plate 53 having a central opening in which the circular middle portion of the nut fits is secured on top of the strut to hold the nutsides whichare counterparts of the channel members are adapted to be detachably secured to the slidable channel members 40.
These holders are provided with pivoted dogs 56 havingpins or projections 57 adaptedto enter the perforations 41 in the chan-- nel members to hold the implement holder in place. These dogs-are provided with screws 58 adapted to bear-against the to of the holder so that said dogs'niay 'be eld with their pins 57 in the respective perforations of the channel members. These mem- 'Bers'55 have rockin members 59 swiveled therein, the axis of t e trunnio'ns59 of said rocking members being at right angles to the channel members 37 and 40. The rocking member is provided with a sector 60 adapted 'to cooperate with a'worm screw 61 journaled in. brackets 62 on the member 55. This worm screw 61 is provided with polygonal faces 63 for .the reception of a wrench.

The nut 65 is held in place by a plate (36 havinga central opening inwhich the middle portion of the nut is rotatably fitted. The upper portion 67 of the nut is provided with polygonal faces forthe -reception of a wrench. 'The rocking memberis provided with'a pair of half journal brackets 68 with which' similar brackets 69 on the plate 66 cooperate. these hearings is a worm screw 70 which neshes with a worm wheel 71 on the swiveled shank holder 64 whereby the latter may be rotated. or contra :ted to different widths. The im-.
ple'men' holders with the. eiiception of the i on anounted on the middle strut member may also be placedat any desirable position Journaled in plement'holder at the middle ofthe frame is,
however, capable of vertical adjustment.
This adjustment is all that is necessary-as the middle implement always travels along the middle of a furrow in a neutral position.
It is different, however, with res ectto the other implements on either si e of the middle one, as they have to be set at various angles in order to throw the dirt toward or away from the middle of the furrow, depending upon the nature of treatment.
- Various combinations may be arranged by adjusting the implement holders. For example, in barring-off a plow may be mounted at either end of the holder frame so that the soil is only. treated adjacent to the plants at the tops of the furrows without touching the middles. In another case a double mold board low may be mounted at the middle of the rame and on either side thereof maybe arranged right and left hand plows for throwing a little 'dirt to the plants on opposite sides of the furrow, and at the same time stirring'the soil to kill the grass and weeds. Then, again, the soil may be. stirred with shovel blades which may be arranged transversely to the direction of travel, in which case they do not throw earth to the plant, nor from it. Obviously, however, the shovels may be set so that the soil can be thrown toward or from the (plant as desired. Also, in laying-by, the irt may be started at the middle of the furrow with a double mold board'plow, then throwing it. closer to the plantsby right and left hand mold board plows, and, finally, throwing the soil into the plant with sets of disks. So, too, the entire furrow may be cultivated with disks. There may be a set of disks arranged to throw the dirt away from the plant at the top of the furrow, followed by a set of disks throwing the dirt from the middle toward the plants and these followed -by. other sets of disks ,picking up the dirt and throwing it still nearer the plants, and, finally, sets of disks throwing the dirt into the plants These and any other desirable combinations may be effected owing to-the universal adjustment of the device.
The device-is adapted-for straddle row cultivation; and by mounting the holders on a tractor of the character-set; forth in said' application, Serial No. 687,929, filed April 1,:
1912, two'entire furrows mayfbe coveredat the same time. v y
In order to facilitate setting the several tiltable and rotatable members oft-he chine accurately at the desired angle or 'position, graduated scales and'cotiperating'indicators' may be provided; at convenient places. For example, asshownin 1,19- and -3, the bolts 28 may be provided witlra e rnerr graduated lines 28 in the regioli. of
the respective cross members '27 of the yokes 26, so as to coiiperate witheither the upper or under sides of the members'27, as preferred. Preferably, .the graduations are marked with suitable numbers ranging up and down from the middle or neutral linemarked zero and being coincident with theside of the cross member 27 when the carrier frame is horizontal. Thus, it is easy to set the frame at the desired inclination up.
or down from its pivot end. The toothed sectors 33 on which the channel members 37 are mounted, are provided with semi-circularscales 33' so as to be read in conjunction with marks 33 provided on the top flanges of the side channel members 24 of the carrier framefio indicate the angle of the trans verse channel members with respect to the side members. As described, the perforations" .41 in the members 37 and 40 are air-cv ranged in-the same spaced relation-on each', side of the longitudinal center of thecarrier.
' tween said pairs of beams, said implement frame, and these lines of perforations may be used as scales. *Bythis constructionthe extension members'and the various imple-' ment holders may be placed symmetrically about the line of draft of the carrier frame, and when the adjustments of the implements are changed, by use of these perforations as 3 scales, the various implements may-be placed So that their resultant total resistance will coincide with the' line of draft of the frame.
The rocking members 59 also are provided with arcuate scales 59 on'their side faces in 135 coiiperative relation to indicator marks 59" on the adjacent top face of the implement holder frame while the rotatory shank holder 64. has about its upper peripheral portion, preferably on the upper ends of'the 40 teeth of the wormgear 71, a series of graduati'ons 64 which may be arranged in two series on opposite sides, or,obv1ously, as a continuous. annular series entlrely girdlmg the member. These graduations '64 are- Pi used in connection with indicator marks 64 on the plate 66 which holds the nut and shank holder 64 on therocking member 59.
Obviously, the device admits of considerable modification without departing from.
g the invention. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the specific construction 'and arrangement shown.-
