l.The objectof the invention is toprovide a certain construction of device of the type' mentioned wherein the necessity for replac ing the pyrophoric material frequently is avoided byv forming the same in a special 'shape which presents an extensive surface to be acted on by thestriker and using a Special form of striker, whereby a large body of material is renderedfavailable and an extended life of a single charge of pyrophoric material 1s thus procured. In carry ing out my said invention the pyrophorlc material is molded 'in the form of a hollowcylinder and the Striker acts against the end of said cylinder, sectorv by sector, as the parts are moved relatively to each other at properfiring time intervals. Such a hollow cylinder will contain a body of pyrophoric material equal to the bulk ofmany pencils such as are used lin other constructions of such apparatus. The operating mechanisin, which is separately described below, acts to partially rotate the shaft always in one direct-ion at proper timing interrals,

2. A11 ignitlng bastion engines, comprising a hollow cylinder of 'pyrophoric material, a striker in ight frictional contact therewith and means for moving said striker-at firing time intervals over the end of said cylinder.
3. An igniting device yfor internal combustion engines consisting of a hollow cylinder of pyropl'loric material held in a slidable but n'onrotatable inclosed carrier, arstriker disk having on its face a gage offset and a `striker offset of abradant material, and pawl and detent operating mechanism acting on striker disk, actuated by the engine, and operating to partially rotate said striker disk at firing time intervals.
4. An igniting device for internal combustion engines comprising a hollow cylinder of pyrophoric material, a striker, means for holding said striker against the end of said cylinder, and means for eiiecting the relative movement of said cylinder and striker without interrupting the operation of said holding means.
