Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 108,477, dated October 18, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:

Figure 1 of the drawing is a cross-section of my invention. same.
My invention relates to car-seats; and consists in a novel arrangement of devices in.- tended to serve as a valuable'improvement in the manufacture of seats for railway-cars.
A of the drawing represents the base or bed of my car-seat. ltconsists of wire-cloth, woven in such manner as to afford room for dust to pass downward through its interstices, and is attached firmly to the frame B, as shown.
C represents a series ot' conical coiledV springs, constructed in such manner that they shall respectively be enlarged both at top and bottom, the Wire being extended horizontally and spirally to form the lower enlargement, as shown on Fig. l ofthe drawing. These springs Fig. 2 is a plan View of the are respectively attached to the wire-cloth bed, by passing the end of the lower cil under the wires of the cloth, in the manner shown at y on Fig.1,while their upper ends are all united by cords z, as shown on Fig. 2.
The top of the springs, united as above mentioned, form a rest for the cushion D, and the combined sprin gs and wire-cloth serve to give an agreeable elasticity to the seat.
For the purpose of providing ready means of access to the springs, I form the frame of the seat in sections and hinge them together.
The letters s represent the hinges by which the two sections are united.
I claim as my invention- In a cushion for car-seats, the wire-cloth bed A and conical spring C, having their smaller ends extended spirally and horizontally, and secured as described, said cushion being arranged in a suitable frame, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim'the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
