It will be noted that the forward portion of the housings 6 extends over the upper end of the latch, and thus material such as Sand, crushed rock, coal and other foreign substances are prevented from dropping in behind the upper ends of the latches, and, thereby interfering with the swinging movements of said latches.
It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved door operating mechanism may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forthv in the appended claims.

1. In adoor operating mechanism the combination, of a door, a winding shaft, pivoted locking members carried by the free edge of the door for cooperating with the winding shaft when'th'e door is in'itsclosed position, said locking members being con" nected together and a flexible member attached to said shaft and to the connection between said locking members.
2. In a door operating mechanism the -combination,.of a door, a winding shaft, door locking devlces pivotally mounted on the free edge of the door and designed to co operate with the Winding shaft when the door is in its closed position, an equalizing bar connecting said devices and a flexible member attached to said winding shaft and said equalizing bar. a
3. In a door operating mechanism the combination, of a door, a winding shaft, latches pivctally, mounted on the free edge of the door for engaging the Winding shaft to lock the door in its closed position, which latches bear against the winding shaft'and are moved inwardly to pass said shaft during the closing movement of the door, a rigid connection between the lower portions of the gravity latches and afiexible member between said rigid connection and the winding shaft. p

A door operating mechanism comprising a door, a winding shaft and connections for raising the door toits closed position, including a pair of pivotally mounted connected locking devices adapted to cooperate with the winding shaft to hold the door in closed position, which connected locking devices are drawn into engagement with the winding shaft by parts of the door raising means.
7. In a car door operating mechanism, the combination with a door, of a winding shaft and connections for raising the door to its closed position, including a pair of connected locking members pivotally mounted on the free edge of the door and adapted to engage the winding shaft to hold the door in closed position.
8. In a car door operating mechanism, the
